I worked with an ImInnocent.

i always assumed it was biblical — I think they were a churchgoing Christian but didn’t know them well enough to ask in any detail.

@isthismylifenow they were of African heritage, do you know of a name it might be a translation of?

I bet it's not a translation but a proclamation. I've met a few Africans with names that meant something when they were born. My favourite was Birthwell. Maybe one of the parents was being accused of something.

Minikievs · 03/07/2023 23:27

I went to school with a girl called Tuesday and my DC goes to school with a boy named Achilles

Needhelp101 · 03/07/2023 23:28

The best name I've come across was a lady called Philomena Mango.

Met a boy called Blade.

Eldest child might have been called Jericho until I came to my senses. There are some lovely names here!

ReginaPerrin · 03/07/2023 23:30

I worked with a woman called Sunshine. Not a nickname, it was her real name. It felt weird calling her Sunshine to start with, but it really suited her - she was a lovely, cheery person.

JazzyBBG · 03/07/2023 23:31

@Agapornis sadly not walkers! It was more a rhyming thing!

Met a Titus at university, but never since. Iseult is my daughter's middle name :)

Outing, but there is an Iseult and a Titus at my dc’s school!

Bevlyn
Clovis

Hidinginaonesie · 03/07/2023 23:43

I was at uni with a girl called Candida. Sounds pretty but is the yeast/fungus that causes thrush.
I also met a little boy called Uther. Like Pendragon. I liked that and wanted to use it for ds………sadly DH hated it!

Anothercrappyusername · 03/07/2023 23:48

Queenie
Xanthe - I know this one regularly gets suggested on baby names, but I've only ever met one, very posh and no one knew how to pronounce her name on first meeting.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/07/2023 23:54

So maybe she was pulling my leg when she said she was named after Richard and Brenda? It’s still a lovely name though.

Not necessarily. Maybe her parents heard of the name and had to choose it - because they were called Richard and Brenda! Or they might have (believed that they) made it up.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/07/2023 23:55

...I loved The Three Investigators as well - I still do!

WotNoUserName · 03/07/2023 23:58

Marti-Pellow.

Yes, like the singer.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/07/2023 23:59

Oh and a Goodluck

Goodluck Jonathan was President of Nigeria from 2010-2015.

Staying in Africa, who can forget Canaan Banana, President of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987?!

User10932 · 04/07/2023 00:06

A young boy named Armani-Vuitton 😩

Ostagazuzulum · 04/07/2023 00:13

Few years back I met a woman in the village near my parents called storm. She was in her 69s and it was her birth name which I thought was pretty unusual for her generation.

I've come across a Merlin and a Sherlock.

I also know two with these names... Residing in Royston Vasey?

BadNomad · 04/07/2023 00:16

Crystal. A 4-year-old I met recently. It's not so much an unusual name, but a rather unusual name for the time. The only other Crystals I've met were already old when I was a child.

Frith2013 · 04/07/2023 00:17

Had almost forgotten that I also know of an Epiphany and a Swastika (means something very different where she is from).

A friend once told me about a woman who gave birth to twins and called them Male (pronounced Marley) and Female (pronounced Fermarly) because she read it on their wrist bands in the hospital.
No idea if he was winding me up, but it still makes me smile!

One of my favourite unusual names is Loveday.

Your friend was just repeating an old urban myth regarding the fictitious twins

Sharlala · 04/07/2023 00:46

Zeta (like Catherine), she's in her 20s
Braeylen (not so much the name I guess but the redundant extra letters)
Murphy for a girl.

Zarataralara · 04/07/2023 00:48

CharlotteStreetW1 · 03/07/2023 19:28

Along those lines, I know a Winsome.

I know a Melion (a girl), pronounced Meelion. I think it's vaguely connected to the Greek for honey (as is Melissa). Pretty sure her mother made it up.

As an unusual pairing, I give you Gulliver and Diggory.

I worked with a woman called Winsome in the 1980s. Never met another.
Bodicea ( girl)
Zeus ( boy, pronounced Zay-us)
Harley ( girl, about 25 years ago)
