Do you love or hate camping?

I just read another thread where a women was saying how she didn’t like camping.
I get why some people don’t like camping but I was surprised about how many others also hate it and they way they talked about their hate for the outdoors.
My question is, am I weird for loving being outdoors amongst the dirt and leaves?
Sometimes I go out in my car and park up in the countryside just to get away on my own and for my birthday I’m actually going away for the weekend on my own camping.
am I weird or is there anyone else out there that gets me?

Im laughing at some of these comments. I absolutely love our VW T6 Campervan. Got a really good weekend meet up soon.

Glad we are all different. I love all sorts of holidays. I have no desire to keep getting on and off a cruise ship though. Looking forward to my holiday abroad soon.

I got my camping days out of the way in the guides and as a student. I have always suffered from terrible hayfever and sleeping so close to the ground does it no favours whatsoever. In addition, as far as I can see, camping is a lot of very hard work with far more basic facilities than you would have at home, including communal showers and toilets. It’s certainly not my idea of a holiday. My husband has always known that I would rather not go on holiday at all rather than sleep in a tent. Fortunately, his mindset is similar and we prefer a nice hotel or bed and breakfast establishment with all mod cons and meals provided. It doesn’t mean that we don’t enjoy being outdoors but we don’t feel the need to spend the entire holiday outdoors in all weathers. - and in this country rain is a probability all too often.

Amused by the people who feel they have to specifically mention that they camp in VW T somethings or bell tents.

You do know there is a massive converted van community. It doesn't make you special.

Posher people have the huge campervans that are bigger than a house.

VWFF · 30/06/2023 20:23

I meant motorhomes.

There are some amazing ones.

Chersfrozenface · 30/06/2023 21:07

If your temporary lodging has wheels and metal walls and roof, that's caravanning.

Camping refers to tents, a fabric covering over a frame, poles or hoops.

And camping in tents sucks.

Nussbaum · 30/06/2023 21:11

@GeraltsBathtub I don't camp in the UK, so I won't get fined for peeing in the field. It's no worse than a dog peeing in a field.
@PuttingDownRoots Ditto, but to be fair I don't take out my collapsible shovel anymore while a mucker looks out 🙂

GAWI · 30/06/2023 21:14

I love it but I don't like the faff of taking along lots of stuff.

I have a minimalist set up that can be transported in one bag. Though it's only enough for one. I love the freedom of it.

Topseyt123 · 30/06/2023 21:18

GeraltsBathtub · 30/06/2023 15:53

So you picked a campsite that was completely wrong for your needs and then binned perfectly good equipment that could have been passed to someone else? Ok then

Not really. I never wanted to go in the first place but let myself be pressured to do so.

No campsite could ever work for me and to be honest, I couldn't give a shit what anyone else thinks.

Nussbaum · 30/06/2023 17:42

I'm more surprised at people going to the toilet block during the night, rather than going for a pee round the back of their tent like I do.
Can I ask those who go to the block why? I'm genuinely curious.

What should those of us with irritable bowel do?

arghtriffid · 30/06/2023 21:31

No I don't piss at the back off my tent. FFS is this a thing? 😅

I just go to the toilet block. It's really not a massive hardship. There's only a couple of campsites I've been to where the toilet has been more than a minutes walk.

Topseyt123 · 30/06/2023 21:23

I'm talking about peeing, not shitting.
Obviously that needs a toilet.
I always pitch up as far away from the toilets as I can, so I've not got streams of people going past my tent all the time.

And camping in tents sucks.

We have an air awning as well as a campervan so it's a bit of both.

So I'm campervanning. I will remove myself from thread. I'm not caravaning either.

I think we've gathered it's not for you.

VWFF · 30/06/2023 22:13

My DH finds the toilet tent a fucker to get back in the bag. We don't poo in the toilet but it's good to be able to pee. Especially after a few beers.

Sometimesgood · 30/06/2023 22:17

Camping is like coffee: the thought of it is much better than the reality. When I partake, I'm left with a bitter taste in the mouth and a sleepless night.

You do indeed. I make no secret of this amazing fact. Why would I?

museumum · 30/06/2023 22:57

I have loved camping. I’m now late 40s and a bit overweight and no longer love sleeping on the ground but I now have a small camper van and live love love that.
I really don’t mind walking to the toilet - in fact I find a 2am walk to wee quite magical.

VWFF · 30/06/2023 22:59

Topseyt123 · 30/06/2023 15:02

I utterly despise camping. I agreed to try it once with DH and DD but it really was such a bag of shit. So uncomfortable. So damp. Dreadful toilet and washing facilities a long walk away. Having to schlep across a field to do the washing up and then again to bring it back again. Cooking food in the rain!!

I fully agree with Terry Wogan questioning why he would want to be less comfortable on holiday than at home.

I lasted one night, and never, ever again. The camping equipment was eventually taken to the dump without further use. Fuck that.

Also, why the hell would I want to drive for ages to get somewhere and then have to build my own accommodation? Where's the fun in that?

Nah. Camping can get to fuck. I'd rather have no holiday at all.

Your post made me laugh. Not in a horrible way. I love the Terry Wogan comment.

I'm not a proper camper though.

My favourite thing we've bought is a fisherman's bed for people wanting to sleep in our awning. So comfy.

The irritable bowel made me chuckle. You can get a portaloo with a toilet tent for peeing but that might be awkward.

mondaytosunday · 30/06/2023 23:16

Im sure plenty do love camping otherwise it wouldn't be a thing!
I don't because: it's uncomfortable, I hate bugs, and I hate having to get up two or three times a night to go to the toilet. Plus lack of feeling clean - I'm beyond using communal showers.

SwordToFlamethrower · 30/06/2023 23:21

Love, love, love it!!! Been to some amazing places, had a really great time. Have no qualms with back to basics living
