Do you love or hate camping?

I just read another thread where a women was saying how she didn’t like camping.
I get why some people don’t like camping but I was surprised about how many others also hate it and they way they talked about their hate for the outdoors.
My question is, am I weird for loving being outdoors amongst the dirt and leaves?
Sometimes I go out in my car and park up in the countryside just to get away on my own and for my birthday I’m actually going away for the weekend on my own camping.
am I weird or is there anyone else out there that gets me?

But that doesnt stop the freezing cold nights and boiling hot mornings.
Last time I stayed in a tent I couldnt fall asleep cause I was freezing (and I had blankets and even a beanie hat!!! This was in August bank holiday, so not in winter!!!!) and then was awake by 6 or 7 as the sun hit the tent and made the air inside impossible to breathe!!!

We have a tent made from technical cotton which makes it much more temperate. Stops it getting too hot in the morning particularly.

And a SIM, rather than an air bed, which is better at insulating from the cold and regulating body temperature. I also take a hot water bottle which really helps!

Id rather stay in a proper hotel room with walls and a mattress! And a shower!

Well that's fine!

You said camping is cold at night and hot in the morning. I was explaining that it doesn't have to be.

Personally, I'm not a fan of hotels for extended periods (more than a night or two), but each to their own!

We used to go camping when I was young in the 60s and 70s but tents were much nicer then, we had a large square frame tent which had two bedroom compartments and a space at the end for the portaloo, I'm not so keen on the large modern tents, they are a lot lighter though, our frame tent was really heavy.

The split screens are being sold for quite a lot of money from what I've seen at camper meets. Some of them are lovely.

I like the sitting around the evening fire in the outdoors bit but I'm not a fan of sleeping in a tent itself. I'm a light sleeper and the singing birds and the daylight breaking through the tent early has me awake.

Yes, if you are the sort of person who needs darkness to sleep I can see why it wouldn't work. We have very thin curtains and windows open all night at home so we are used to light and birdsong and it doesn't bother us.

I hate camping but I love the outdoors, I don’t kind peeing behind a bush but hate communal washing facilities so a campsite toilet block is uggh and wild camping is frowned on in the UK.

We are embarking on buying a motorhome to me it’s the great outdoors but back to a decent bed. It’s going to be a long time to find the right one as the layouts, standard and price are so variable.

Plan Is to travel the UK and Europe. Then as I have relatives in America and we have friends in Canada and America either hire a motorhome or buy one and resell and go across Canada and some parts of America, doing some visits on the way. that’s for when DH retires. DH speaks decent German, Spanish and French and I can speak French so hoping that gets us through. The plan is to travel extensively for about 2 years and DS will live house sit for us. This will hopefully happen in about 2 years time. Finding the right motor home will probably take months for starters. Plan to start using it next Spring. We are hiring one this autumn to see if we think we will be ok with it first.

Our tent has blackout bedrooms but that doesn't help the birdsong!

We have and do exactly the same.

If you stick earplugs in and then play white noise (or ambient sleep sounds like rain) on a sleep mask with earphones built in, you can avoid being disturbed by pretty much anything.

Although I prefer to put a padlock on the inside of my bedroom area when I do that because I wouldn't know if anyone came into the tent.

I camp at festivals a lot so I need a system as I'm a super light sleeper.

You mean canvas? Another benefit of canvas over man made fibres used for tentage is that is shrinks slightly when it’s wet so gets less flappy. Man made fibres do the opposite.

The big downside is that it rots if left damp.

Not since I was 16 and had to poo in a hole during my D of E award. Put me off for life.

I love the outdoors but I don't like camping. Maybe my view of it is coloured by my 2 camping trips with the Girl Guides when I was about 12 or 13. The first one was absolutely awful. It was the beginning of April and was bloody freezing. And it wasn't helped by the Guide leaders telling ghost stories when we sat around the campfire in the evening. Being one of the younger Guides,I was 'sandwiched' in between the older ones when we slept,2 either side of me,and the night after one of these campfire stories,I woke up busting for a wee at about 4 am. The toilet block was about 100 yards away,in the pitch black. No way was I going there by myself! I had to wake my patrol leader and patrol second so I could get out of the tent, then insisted that one of them came over with me. They were not amused.

To my mind, camping just represents inconvenience and discomfort. I like my home comforts, don't like 'roughing' it.
