Do you love or hate camping?

I just read another thread where a women was saying how she didn’t like camping.
I get why some people don’t like camping but I was surprised about how many others also hate it and they way they talked about their hate for the outdoors.
My question is, am I weird for loving being outdoors amongst the dirt and leaves?
Sometimes I go out in my car and park up in the countryside just to get away on my own and for my birthday I’m actually going away for the weekend on my own camping.
am I weird or is there anyone else out there that gets me?

I live the outdoors and live camping for have often said I'd live in a tent / although I do mean one pitched in say the Lake District rather than Sangatt.

DS would joking mr. DH and DD are less keen.

IheardYouButDontWantToAnswer · 30/06/2023 08:02

I've never been camping, never wanted to. I like comfort - a clean, cosy bed, a shower/bath, proper toilet, somewhere to dry my hair and put my make-up on.

People that say hotel rooms are stuffy and claustrophobic, they’re just a bedroom 😵‍💫 do you feel that way about your own bedrooms at home? (That’s actually a real question, not a sarcy one!!)
hotel bedrooms are often bigger than my bedroom at home 😂

Hotel bedrooms are always smaller and darker than our bedroom at home - at least, they are in the approx £130 a night range that we are prepared to pay.

Our mortgage is £550 a month and we love our home and live in a holiday destination already. So I really resent spending 1/4 of that for just one night in a room with worse decor, worse bedding, less space and less light.

That's why we have a campervan.

I detest and despise camping. I've tried it once and I'll never do it again. I love wildlife and beautiful places but I can enjoy those without camping. I do understand the appeal of living in worse accommodation than my house or spending money on approximately 500 pieces of equipment to make it somewhat close to semi-tolerable. I'd rather go without a holiday for the rest of my life than camp.

We are in our caravan now in the Peak District and it's sort of like camping, especially if I sit in the awning to get the tenty feel😀

Greatbumble · 30/06/2023 08:08

My happiest holidays have been in a tent. If you love it make the most of it while you can, you never know when age or illness related issues might prevent it.

Ambi · 30/06/2023 08:10

I like a solid bed and solid roof and private bathrooms facilities particularly on holiday. I've never actually been camping but I can't sleep on sofabeds or blow up mattresses so I think I'd hate it.

HopefulOrange · 30/06/2023 08:11

Love the outdoors & camping.

All our family holidays growing up were camping in France - I have the best memories of all the fun we had.
I think it’s one of the reasons I love the outdoors now.

Dd is 3 and we’ve been camping a few times in the UK, she really enjoys it and sleeps well. Our Ds is still a baby so we won’t be going till next year, but looking forward to it!

croft89 · 30/06/2023 08:14

Love the outdoors as long as there's not other people anywhere near me

Hate camping, it's roughing it and basically one step up from a doorway

keel34 · 30/06/2023 08:14

Hate it. Uncomfortable, damp, either too cold or too hot, got to walk miles to the toilet. I like to enjoy the great outdoors from a hotel balcony.

BarelyLiterate · 30/06/2023 08:22

Hate.

I haven’t been camping for 20+ years, and have no plans to do it again. When I’m on holiday, I like comfort, rest, privacy, relaxation and great food. Camping is hard work, uncomfortable, inconvenient unhygienic and you’re at the mercy of the elements. Good luck to those who enjoy it, but it’s not for me. Each to their own.

RampantIvy · 30/06/2023 08:23

So true. DH uses a CPAP machine at night so even if we loved camping it would be off the menu now. Also, he is too attractive to biting insects, which would also make it a no.

Wobblybobble · 30/06/2023 08:27

I love the outdoors and loved camping as a young adult, but now that I’m middle aged, my back hurts if I sleep on the ground and I don’t like being freezing cold at night. We still go camping in the mountains maybe once/year because my husband and kids love it, but for me the physical discomfort means it isn’t as fun as it used to be.

Summerskies2023 · 30/06/2023 08:27

I absolutely hate camping.

chickensandbees · 30/06/2023 08:30

I love camping, but I am a fairweather camper and preferably in France where the weather is good and the facilities are brilliant. UK campsites are generally very expensive for a muddy field and poor facilities. Camping pitched by a river is heaven.

I much prefer it to a hotel room, you get more space and all your own stuff is there. I take the mattress from our sofa bed with duvet and pillows and sleep brilliantly.

When we retire it ill be downsize the house and buy a motorhome for even more luxurious camping.

MsRinky · 30/06/2023 08:32

I love it (disclaimer, I have no kids and a no-mod-cons campervan). I don't even mind the nighttime loo trips, especially when you find yourself alone in a field as the sum comes up with just bunnies or a deer for company. Plus, when I get home my tired 80s bathroom feels like a 5* spa.

I think our experience of tents and hotel rooms have been quite different!

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2023 08:33

Hate it.

Guess what I'm doing tomorrow.

IAmSalmaFuckingHayek · 30/06/2023 08:33

I love the outdoors, but hate camping.
I can spend all day mucking about outside, getting dirty, whatever.
I’m happy to cook outside as well.
Sleeping though? Urgh. I need to feel clean and comfortable - have never managed either of these successfully when camping!

lljkk · 30/06/2023 08:36

I tolerate it. Sometimes it's the cheapest way to visit somewhere. Never a 1st choice.

ShiteRider · 30/06/2023 08:37

I love it, I’m never happier than when I’m camping.

Give me fresh air, no Wi-Fi, open views, cooking outdoors, clear skies with no light pollution over a hotel or the like any day.

VWFF · 30/06/2023 08:38

VW campervan owner and love it.

mrsm43s · 30/06/2023 08:40

I love camping, but not when you're crammed in to an overcrowded field - I like secluded woodland spots, or if camping with friends, a private paddock. For me camping is all about peace and quiet and back to nature - so being stuck in a field with a whole load of families with screaming kids doesn't do it for me - that's a whole different kind of camping (that has it's place) but that doesn't really offer me anything now.

I love cooking outside - that's one of the big pulls for me - we plan our menu and cook good food - fresh moules frite, paella, baked camembert etc, plus nice quality local sausages and/or bacon for breakfast!

I love waking up in nature, hearing the birds sing. Getting my Moki going first thing and having a peaceful coffee outside before the day begins.

As I'm getting older, I do struggle to make the bed comfortable to sleep well, and I often need the toilet during the night, which can be a pain. I don't think I'd be able to tolerate a fortnights' camping now, but four or five nights is a perfect way to reconnect with nature and recharge my batteries.

Netcam · 30/06/2023 08:41

This is our camping, we got this micro caravan last year, a bit quirky but fits in our garage and gives us a proper bed, toilet, hot water and a little kitchen. We love the outdoors and walking, but DH and I are in our early 50s and want a bit of comfort.

Do you love or hate camping?
