Do you love or hate camping?

I just read another thread where a women was saying how she didn’t like camping.
I get why some people don’t like camping but I was surprised about how many others also hate it and they way they talked about their hate for the outdoors.
My question is, am I weird for loving being outdoors amongst the dirt and leaves?
Sometimes I go out in my car and park up in the countryside just to get away on my own and for my birthday I’m actually going away for the weekend on my own camping.
am I weird or is there anyone else out there that gets me?

I don’t like camping. Lots of what’s been described on this thread - family time playing cards, good book etc- can be done in an apartment. And someone mentioned stepping out of the tent to find someone cooking sausages - well that someone would be me! I find camping hard work. Cooking on a camp stove takes ages, realising there’s no water and trekking to the tap just to get that first morning cup of tea. Everything is just so faffy and takes ages. Camping in the rain is the worst!!

If it’s harder work than being at home it’s not a holiday for me.

I absolutely love it despite not being a massively outdoors-type person on other ways. All our holidays growing up were camping, we used to take the DCs every year but not sure if they'd be up for it now they are older teens also one has a weekend job. We had a short break in a static caravan at Easter and although it was nice it just wasn't the same at all. The only thing I hate is all the packing and unpacking before and after, we haven't got a garage so all the stuff is in sheds at the end of the garden and has to be gathered up and carried down to the car, also drying the tent and airing all the bedding. The last couple of times we've been we've hired a bell tent which has been much nicer.

still love camping and find hotels rooms stuffy and claustrophobic.

I love camping. We have a canvas tent and good equipment. I like how it takes a few days to aclimatise and find your feet but when you do it is wonderful.

I like having to walk places to do simple things like wash up or go to the loo. I enjoy hearing the wind and the animals as I sleep at night.

I booked into an expensive hotel at the end of my week camping one year and as PP said it felt stuffy, dirty and I could hardly breathe.

Love camping. I’m nearly 50 and go 9-10 times most years and two week summer hol is always camping somewhere in Europe on small sites near mountains. For me it’s being outside from first to last thing. Definitely agree with those saying there is always something to do and everything takes longer - trek to loos, to wash up etc etc but I like that slower pace too. I’m not trying to convert anyone, it’s perfectly reasonable to prefer brick walls. However, I simply could not afford 6-7 weekends away plus a week then two weeks in a hotel or AirBnB each year and camping allows me to get all this time away relatively affordably (tho we have invested in quite a bit of kit and the sites are getting more expensive, but I imagine all accommodation is).

FatCatBum · 30/06/2023 07:31

I like being outside, but can't stand camping. I can't stand being uncomfortable, hearing randoms snore and fart, waking up feeling damp and most importantly can't stand the gross toilet and washing facilities that loads of people use

Campingsuperstar · 30/06/2023 07:34

I love it. Retirement will consist of me and a van/tent off around Europe. Love it with the kids and usually do 3 weeks in the summer.
I like the quieter sites, the crazy ones, the coastal ones … most of them. Can’t cope with the idea of hotels at all -I don’t get them, just feel a bit claustrophobic and trapped. As we became a bigger family I did develop an allergy to weekend camping - too much effort for the outcome but as the kids get older I take them separately sometimes which is sweet - bit of one to one.

Campingsuperstar · 30/06/2023 07:36

Also I love the savings in what hotels would cost and we eat so well using fresh local food. I love the mix of cooking and eating out that reessnts a good camping trip.

PuttingDownRoots · 30/06/2023 07:41

This is going to sound wierd...

The nighttime loo trips are one of my favourite bits. Having a legitimate reason to wander around outdoors at night, with the different sights and sounds... spotting wildlife etc. Or catching s random sunrise...

Not when its raining as much!

I lived on a farm for 15 years and spent another 10 Years living in a static caravan on a field but I still love camping and find hotels rooms stuffy and claustrophobic.

In a hotel room I have air con, comfy mattress, no insect surprises and a lovely bathroom. Win win for me.

TheChosenTwo · 30/06/2023 07:46

Went once 20 years ago, never ever again. I totally understand why people love it because all the reasons given are valid but I just hate the whole thing. It’s not for me!!
Plus I also have a (fucking irrational) thing about grass, especially damp or, worse, wet grass. If I have to walk on damp/wet grass I end up clenching my jaw and focusing on marching off it as quickly as possible, I don’t know why I hate it so much but it just makes me want to scream!!
There’s a lot of grass when you go camping 😂 it’s obviously not the only reason I hate it, but it’s one of my weird ‘quirks’ 🙈
I love the outdoors and going for walks, just on paths.

EggInANest · 30/06/2023 07:48

I love camping!

I love sleeping in my tent, and bought a cotton canvas one which feels even nicer. Love a campfire , the simplicity and back to basics nature of it all.

I go to quiet small sites where you can pitch a long way from others and which have a ‘no amplified / electronic music’ policy, and no EHU.

The kids have grown up enjoying this too. Whittling sticks for sausages and marshmallows, building fires etc.

A starlit night in my tent is my happy place.

It’s not compulsory, no one else has to like it… and they definitely aren’t being original when they turn up on threads asking for camping suggestions with ‘book a hotel … (wit emojis of choice)’

rookiemere · 30/06/2023 07:48

I love the outdoors, my main issue with camping is not having access to an indoor toilet as normally I go once or twice a night, but when camping my bladder seems to get ultra worried about the whole thing and I need to go 3-4 times.

UsingChangeofName · 30/06/2023 00:13

Two different questions in my book.

I hate camping.

I love being outdoors.

This. I have dogs so am outdoors a lot, love it. Camping though? GTF! Just no. I like my comforts - and I don’t go to the toilet outside!

TheChosenTwo · 30/06/2023 07:49

People that say hotel rooms are stuffy and claustrophobic, they’re just a bedroom 😵‍💫 do you feel that way about your own bedrooms at home? (That’s actually a real question, not a sarcy one!!)
hotel bedrooms are often bigger than my bedroom at home 😂

Polis · 30/06/2023 07:51

I like camping but we do it as a means to an end, cheap/last minute accommodation usually, and not as an activity in itself.

theresalwaysguineapigcurry · 30/06/2023 07:51

I love it.
I say that but also find myself washing up in a communal sink next to people clearly better off than me and think 'you could be in Ibiza right now, why are you here?'

arghtriffid · 30/06/2023 07:52

It’s perfectly possible to be outdoors all day then return at night to a comfy hotel room with a big clean bed and large luxurious bathroom.

I may be odd but there is no other feeling like sleeping outside at night all your senses are engaged.

It also burns loads of calories and I come home a lot fitter. I am in my 50s and I like how it keeps me fit. The last place I camped was a 5 minute walk to the loo 😀. I wake up when it gets light and go for a run and then cook a breakfast on the stove.

MaryJean87 · 30/06/2023 07:53

Hate it for the toilet and shower situation. I'd just feel completely gross.

Peony654 · 30/06/2023 07:54

We love it! I always did it as a kid, and still enjoy it. Nice to get away from screens, and the fresh air means i sleep well.

KnitMePurlMe · 30/06/2023 07:57

I used to love camping but I can’t sleep anymore and the tiredness drains me. Fabulous memories of camping with the kids when they were younger though - and still LOVE the outdoors 🥰

PrincessHoneysuckle · 30/06/2023 07:58

The minimum ill do is a b&b.Caravans don't even appeal.

siriusblackcat · 30/06/2023 07:58

I love being outdoors but hate camping.

It's cold, it's damp, it's uncomfortable. The light and the birds or other people's children wake me up at stupid o'clock and I hate tramping across a wet field to pee.

I've said to DH and the kids, if they want us to camp again I'll stay with them till evening then go back to Aahotel with warmth, dryness, a nice bed, curtains and a toilet and shower.

ThisIsACoolUserName · 30/06/2023 07:59

I love camping and the outdoors.
I get outside as often as I can.

For DH and I, camping allows you to sleep somewhere most holiday accommodation doesn't - such as deep in the forest or in the sand dunes. I love waking up to rabbits hopping around us!

However, we've had campervans and a tent and I can't be bothered with tent camping, but LOVE campervan camping.
It's the faff of tent camping - all the stuff you have to pack, and unpack, and you're often putting it away at the end when every item - and the tent itself - is wet. Whereas in a campervan, you just pull up at your destination and you're done.

KnitMePurlMe · 30/06/2023 07:59

@TheChosenTwo but in a hotel you don’t have the communal space of a house - we always stay in self catering so we have a lounge and garden 😄

User13985094 · 30/06/2023 08:01

I used to like it but now I'm older I like being in a caravan as it has a toilet, a fixed bed and is dry. DH still goes camping in a tent sometimes on his own but he is very outdoorsy.
