What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

A used tampon is gross and can't go in the bin but a packet that contained, I dunno raw meat can?

That’s also gross but what does one do with their used tampon, does one wrap it in something? they’re rather well sodden. That’s what the bins are for in the work toilets isn’t it, the sanitary ones, I thought that was just for pads, so people don’t flush pads

omg I’m the problem, it’s me

You can freeze cheese.

Cuckoos sing a major third at the start of spring, and a minor third as they get ready to leave for the summer.

You just wrap it in a bit of loo roll

Never put a melanine plate/bowl in the microwave, the food will stay cold and the plate will be crazy hot.

Yeah I learned the hard way with this one!!

Well I definitely knew about wipes and never even thought to flush cat litter but I genuinely thought that was the beauty of a tampon that it’s pretty much cotton wool so could be flushed. You can’t flush cotton wool either can you?

someone is going to need to talk me through what as a society we do with our used tampons. My flow can be quite heavy, what do you do if you need to change at someone’s house?

You just put it in their bin! Nope, you shouldn’t flush cotton wool.

Thighdentitycrisis · 28/06/2023 22:22

You can gather cat hair by stroking your foot toward you on the carpet when wearing shoes

(probably difficult to picture this)

Rubber gloves work too! I thought my mum had finally lost the plot when I found her stroking the sofa wearing marigolds and muttering about the cat 🤣

Does this work on stair carpets too. Don't have carpet on the stairs or a cat. Just curious

There's a bit at the back of your fridge your meant to drain or clean or something. Kept reading about it on TOMM last year but haven't got around to checking out yet Confused It's defo on my to do list but keeps getting bumped.

Do this the smell is so bad and it took us a plumber, builder, etc in to check what the smell was. Our plumber asked his work mates (we had tried everything to find out what the smell was) and one guessed this.

I have more than one freckle…does that class me as a weirdo 😳

No it means you are an exceptionally womanly woman

You out them in a sanitary bag if available or wrap in loo paper.

Your the odd one for being disgusted by your own bodily functions.

Mine too. Is this how you tell who's a woman??

Think it's quicker to clock the Adams apple, giant hands and walking like....a man . Very interesting though.

I've got lots of freckles, but not 3" from my wrist on my right forearm. My voice has got deeper as I have aged, am I turning into a bloke?

Did you know many vacuum cleaners have filters too? 😁

And hair dryers too, it’s amazing how bunged up with ‘fluff’ it gets!

thaisweetchill · 28/06/2023 22:37

If you use mouthwash do it prior to brushing your teeth. If you do it after you've just pointlessly brushed your teeth and strips something (can't remember what) which makes them healthy.

There’s no need to get catty, im just used to flushing

MsMcGonagall · 28/06/2023 22:45

What to do with used tampons. At home, wrap in some loo paper, put in bin. At work or public place with sanitary bins - put in sanitary bin.

At friend's house IF you don't feel up to putting a tampon wrapped in loo paper in their bin: Wrap in loo paper, put into your tampon bag/container / inside zipped pocket of a bag / similar, put in bin when you get home.

ShakeYourFeathers · 28/06/2023 22:46

I have the freckle on my arm ☺️

I've never flushed pads or tampons. Grew up with a septic tank and most places where I went had dodgy plumbing

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 28/06/2023 22:49

I wrap used tampons in loo roll then pop them in a nappy bag and in the bin. No issues to do the same if I am staying with someone, it just goes in their bin or in my bag until I get home.

I only discovered as a fully grown adult woman that you need to wear a bra the same colour as your skin under a white top for it not to show through, rather than a white one to match the top. Probably explained that really badly as I’m tired!
Kind of annoyed my mum never passed on that info.

TheDinosaurDuchess · 28/06/2023 00:13

Talking to my colleagues the other day, I discovered I knew something they didn't.

Your petrol gauge in your car tells you what side your fuel cap is on.

I knew this, they didn't. They returned to the office the next day shocked by this revelation, because they checked their cars on the drive home, and yes the gauge did indicate the side the cap is on 🤣

In addition to this, there is usually somewhere to hold the filler cap rather than let it hang and touch the car. BMW has a slot that looks like the fold of the cap.

I didn’t know that !

TeenLifeMum · 28/06/2023 22:56

Why aren’t we allowed to be disgusted by our bodily functions? I find pus squeezed from spots gross and my poop isn’t something I want to be around for extended periods of time so why can’t we also find tampons gross?

i tried to buy tampon bags like the paper style at work but really struggled to get hold of them. I use a bin but I assume most people flush or they’d sell the bags more readily.

BananaPalm · 28/06/2023 22:57

Cool thread!

Did you know that each cashew nut "grows out" of a fruit of a size of an apple? Meaning that if you have 10 cashew nuts in your hand, there had to be 10 pieces of fruit picked to "retrieve " them. From outside of that fruit. I always find that very weird.

Also, if you want to clean sliver (jewellery, spoons, etc) easily, put a teaspoon of salt in a small bowl of water, add a few sheets of tin foil and put silver on the sheets (all immersed in salty water). When you take them out they'll be beautifully shiny and bright.

And finally, you can buy a bag of citric acid off Amazon or the likes to have an eco-friendly lime scale remover for kettles, etc. Just boil half a kettle of water, add several tablespoons of citric acid, stir and wait a few minutes. It will remove it all and you don't need to worry about chemicals in your kettle. Back in the day citric acid was used in lieu of lemons for cooking if you didn't have any so it's totally edible.
