What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

I was also surprised at the amount of people I knew who seemed to think cows just produce milk all the time.

It did seem to be slightly older people so I wondered if it was something g that was maybe told to kids many years ago and they just didn't question it

To cut pockets of new coats open. When I was 29 I complained to everyone that this fairly expensive coat had fake bloomin pockets.

One day the treads wore out and I found pockets!!!

That explains why the inside pockets on my evening dress suit are sewn up! I never realised😚

There are two things at the back (usually) of a fridge that need cleaning: the heat exchange coils (external - usually up the back but mine are underneath) need dusting to maintain efficiency and reduce fire risk; the drain (internal) needs cleaning to avoid clogging, sludge and stink.

Our fridge is integrated and built into a stupid cupboard thing (I have so much loathing) so I don't think I'd be able to get to the coils to dust them. But presumably the cupboard keeps the dust off them anyway?

The pink stuff gets all manner of grub off walls, including crayon (test a bit first incase it takes your paint work off too...)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/06/2023 09:37

@Lolabear38 , you reminded me of a friend who complained over the phone that her new tumble drier just wasn’t getting things dry.

’Have you cleaned the filter?’

‘Er, what filter?’

🤣🤣 🤪🤪 omg this is hilarious, this is the actual use for wd40! What did you think it was for

WD-40 was never just a lock lubricant. It was originally designed to to protect the outer skin of the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion. It was later found to have many household uses.

My not particularly expensive tumble dryer h won't work if the filter needs to be cleaned, if I had a new one that didn't have the feature and got full up when still new I'd be thinking about returning it

Unless the pp is living in the 1950s I'm guessing that's not what she thinks a widely sold household product is for 😂

All 5 of the cars in our household do.

On the flip side, I've only driven one car that has had this (Ford Fiesta) and I've driven a lot of different cars as I used to rent them for work trips.

My current car (Nissan Qashqai) doesn't.

But that pp mocked someone for not 'knowing' that WD-40 is 'for' loosening locks. It's for any kind of lubrication or water displacement you want to do.

Check you manual - mine has the coils underneath so you can dust them from the front.

I don't understand what you mean, we all know it's for lubricating, are you suggesting that the pp knew it was for lubricating things but somehow didn't know that a lock was a thing?

No that the mocker thought that WD-40 was only for lubricating locks.

No...the person having a (quite lighthearted, tbf) chuckle didn't imply it was the 'only' use for WD-40.

Googling photos of the quashquai fuel guage shows a little arrow by the picture of the petrol pump, but I must admit I didn't check every model 😂

Neekoh · 29/06/2023 10:02

(Anyway I hope the poster in question didn't take the ribbing too much to heart! - it's not a big deal and it's good to be able to chuckle at oneself from time to time)

I see, I hadn't read the post where someone said it was only for locks.

Me and other posters were questioning the posting of using something for a very purpose it was intended as being something that others would not have known and wondering what the poster thought it was for

Neekoh · 29/06/2023 10:04

It'll still be a useful tip for someone I'm sure! Lots of people don't know about handy things like WD-40.

Septembe66 · 29/06/2023 10:10

21 plate Kia Ceed definitely does and every other car I’ve ever been in. Had many conversations about it 😂It’s not the gauge it’s the little arrow next to the fuel indicator and that’s why it’s there so you know which side to pull in to. I also don’t have a freckle on my right arm but by daughters do 🤷‍♀️

Nissan Qashqai here does.

Don't know how accurate it is but all my friends and I had it in common...

Every woman has a freckle in the same place on her forearm. Around 3 inches down, right in the middle...*

I've got one too!

You're supposed to crumble stock cubes while they're still in their paper wrapping. Then you can just release the powder.

If it's OXO sometimes that works for me and sometimes it goes everywhere. You have to do it very carefully.
