What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

I drive an mpv and have found that the extra long hoses never reach! Very awkward to have to get back in the car after trying and failing to fill up and either drive round to re-queue or do some aggressive reversing round the forecourt!

What kind of MPV? I used to have a Renault Scénic and a Fiat Multipla and never had any difficulty.

I used to have one too and also never found a problem, maybe there are some very old pumps still around

That most if not all city buses require you to have the correct change when paying with cash. The buses in the little village where I grew up did not so it was quite a shock to be spoken to thusly:

Me: a single to Blah Blah street please, here's a five.
Bus driver: ARGH! CORRECT CHANGE ONLY! Off you go.

Not in London. It's no cash allowed at all

Did you know about reading appliance manuals? That's a handy one.

I know I should read them but they’re so boring and full of info you don’t need and I never have time. They often do have a quick start leaflet but what you need is a sticker on the appliance (or to put on it optionally) that tells you the basics. Do x every month, do y every year, url for full instructions online, little diagram of where filters etc are.

That is one of the best ideas ever! I could so use a sticker guideline. I love my magnets that are on my fridge that tell me the different temps meat should be and the measuring equivalents one. Life savers and would love to have little guides for my fridge, hot water heater, furnace, washer, dryer, dehumidifier, etc.

Just brilliant!

Do corned beef cans still have a key on them? Why have sardines switched to ring-pulls and corned beef hasn't?

My car's petrol gauge is on the oppisite side to the petrol cap so thats wrong but my car is 19 years old so that might be why.

The petrol gauge has a little arrow showing you which side the fuel cap is on. It doesn't matter where the petrol gauge itself is. I didn't notice the little arrow until it was pointed out to me. Have another look.

You out them in a sanitary bag if available or wrap in loo paper.

Your the odd one for being disgusted by your own bodily functions.

Not true, all emotions serve an evolutionary purpose - the whole point of the disgust emotion is to protect you from infection from bodily fluids.
So if we're judging who is odd, technically it's the person who's disgust emotion is not triggered by bodily fluids!

I know I'm being stupid, but how does this work? Do you mean you put it in the slot where the coin would normally go? 🤔

I find it a little difficult to believe that anyone can remember to carry a corned beef tim key around but forgets a £ coin

Corned beef isn't even a particularly popular thing to buy in the first place, do you open the tin and then carry around the key with the sharp metal strip attached? Or buy a tin and through it away just to get the key

Sounds to me that someone made this up as a joke and it's been repeated ever since

Same as the using a key, do you carry a spare door key for the purpose of faff about taking it ioff your keyring or are there people who keep their keys loose in their pockets

All nonsense if you ask me😀

It's tighty righty @Supersimkin2.

It used to puzzle me sometimes that not everybody knows which way to turn right-hand-threaded fasteners (the most usual type) to tighten or loosen them. I am jolted out of this smugness when I have to do or undo something backwards or upside down like the nuts that hold toilet seats on or the screws that hold the legs of Ikea desks onto the top. I actually have to get my head so that I can look at them. So it's muscle memory not 'knowledge' really.

Not everybody knows that some threaded things go the other way and have left-hand threads.

Not everybody knows, either for sure, or at all, which is right and which is left. Some of these are very brainy people, too.

pickledandpuzzled · 29/06/2023 08:56

The alphabet one...

PP said w is the only letter not in its name.

So ess has an s
Ar has an r

Doubleyou doesn't have a 'wuh' sound or a w letter.

Cee is a funny one. I can't work it out.

pickledandpuzzled · 29/06/2023 08:57

@LaBefana I did a loo recently and had a mental wrestle as to which way it needed to go.

And I have to pretend to hold a pen to know which is my right hand.

FoodFestfFork · 29/06/2023 09:01

As if petrol station forecourts aren't intimidating enough places anyway without worrying if someone behind is cursing me for being in the wrong lane. I don't want to get all dirty lugging an extended petrol hose over the other side of the car. I'll wait.

Quiverer · 29/06/2023 09:02

JD90 · 28/06/2023 18:56

Unless you drive my OHs car, I told him this recently as I thought he was in the longer line and making it more awkward for himself. But his is actually on the opposite side 🤣 however totally tracks for most cars.

Are you saying it has an arrow pointing to the opposite side? That would be insane.

Some people proclaim this to be untrue because they think people are referring to the little sign like an old-fashioned petrol filler. But actually in modern cars at least it is more likely to be an arrow.

LaBefana · 29/06/2023 09:04

Cabbagegarden · 29/06/2023 01:16

I'm sure this is how W is pronounced in French.(double vey) Correct me if I'm wrong.

You're right, but in France a toilet is sometimes called in speech a 'vécé' (from the English 'WC'). But Belgians say it as 'wécé'. I guess the 'double' got dropped.

To cut pockets of new coats open. When I was 29 I complained to everyone that this fairly expensive coat had fake bloomin pockets.

One day the treads wore out and I found pockets!!!

I never do this. The line is so much better if not cut

If it's difficult to turn a door key, padlock key a squirt of WD40 in the lock works like magic, also for stiff hinges etc.

Or actually on a key that fits, you only need a bit, and there's no danger of excess dribbling out of the lock and making a streak on the door (found this one out the hard way)

TheNameIsDickDarlington · 29/06/2023 09:12

You don't hear noises in your dreams

I don't understand what this means. Like you wouldn't have a dream about a phone ringing or what?

LaBefana · 29/06/2023 09:13

@pickledandpuzzled

Ar has an r

Only where people go oo-arr like Bristol and the West. Where I come from originally people say 'Ah' for R.

DeanElderberry · 29/06/2023 09:17

In Ireland lots of people say (said) 'or' for r and 'ah' for a which is a bit confusing if you change countries half way through school. And h as 'haitch' of course.

🤣🤣 🤪🤪 omg this is hilarious, this is the actual use for wd40! What did you think it was for

Sorry but this one not true, my petrol gauge on opposite side to my fuel cap🤷‍♀️

It’s not the petrol gauge itself. The picture of the petrol pump has an arrow next to it normally and the arrow is pointing to the side your petrol cap is on.

If you buy tin foil and keep it in the box, there are 2 little punched pieces at each end of the box and if you press them in, it keeps the tin foil roll in place. I found this out a couple of weeks ago reading something on here. Don't know who to credit sorry.

Also, I'm surprised at the amount of people I've spoken to who thought dairy cows lactated naturally - that includes a medical doctor.

I can almost understand a Dr thinking that, seeing as lactation in humans can be induced without pregnancy and you tend to extrapolate from what you know.

Exactly, lubricating the lock, the question is what did @Greentree1 actually think it was for

I don't know how this is confusing people really. All cars designed for the UK will have the gauges on the right hand side.

Other people's lives are so interesting, who has multiple conversations about milking cows, how does that keep coming up 😀

Unless of course the pp is a dairy farmer
