What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

I hadn't read the post where someone said it was only for locks

You haven't read that post because it doesn't exist.

While I knew most babies are born bald, I didn't realise they have a little knob on their backs that you can turn to quickly grow hair.

Turn it clockwise and they sprout hair, anticlockwise and the hair retracts again.

Tressie babies! 😂

Mine doesn't - 3 years old

If you use mouthwash do it prior to brushing your teeth. If you do it after you've just pointlessly brushed your teeth and strips something (can't remember what) which makes them healthy.

If you rinse with mouthwash after brushing it removes the fluoride from the teeth, its bit like putting suncream on, washing it off then going out in the sun. Same goes for rinsing with water after brushing your teeth which so many people do.

As if petrol station forecourts aren't intimidating enough places anyway without worrying if someone behind is cursing me for being in the wrong lane. I don't want to get all dirty lugging an extended petrol hose over the other side of the car. I'll wait.

You'll wait. And make everyone behind you wait, even though they would happily use the pumps you don't want to use if only you'd get out of the way.

Why would you "get all dirty"?

More relevant to everyday life - don't wash underwired bras without putting them in a mesh bra saver first. There is a chance the wires can escape and ruin your washing machine.

Au contraire. I've ruined two of my best bras doing that. And in one case the bag itself. Once the bra was done up and once it was undone. The hooks caught on the mesh and the bras (and bag) were shredded.

😂😂😂

I suppose I missed the bit about hinges, but even so...

WD-40 is also great for protecting garden tools in storage over the winter or whatever - clean them well, then apply a thin layer of WD-40 to stop them rusting.

This one is a bit more niche, but still useful - horse riders, if you use studs when competing, wrap them in a bit of newspaper soaked in WD-40: keeps the threads nice and clean (this also works for rugby / football boot studs).

My life motto is 'if you can't fix it with WD-40, duct tape and / or baler twine, you're clearly not trying hard enough'. 😁

Well, on the subject of lactating cows, I continued to produce milk for about 8 years after my child was born. Am I a freak of nature?!

Choccyp1g · 29/06/2023 10:36

I never queue at the pump. You can go to any pump and fill up, that's why they invented long hoses on petrol pumps! Just pull the hose out to the opposite side of the car.

Or for an easier time, wrestle with a boa constrictor.

Oh just thought of one for left handers.

If you are trying to open a bottle of wine, don't try to move the corkscrew, it is designed for right handed people, hold the corkscrew still and use your left hand to turn the bottle.

I have a left handed screwdriver. Seconds Hours of fun watching right-handers struggle with it.

You don't hear noises in your dreams. I had a dream early this morning and definitely had a conversation in it with a friend who has a very distinctive voice so I know this one isn't true.

BadNomad · 29/06/2023 10:47

Apparently you can't switch lights on in your dreams. It's one of the things you can do to test if you are in a lucid dream. I keep wanting to test this theory, but I never remember to when I'm in a dream.

(My teeth falling out is the trigger that makes me realise I'm dreaming.)

PrueRamsay · 29/06/2023 10:52

Dreaming about your teeth falling out means you are worrying about money @BadNomad . I also do this…

I don’t have the freckle and am ridiculously upset about that.

I can’t drag my fridge freezer out and back again, it’s position is too tight iyswim? But the little drainage hole is blocked and no amount of prodding it with skewers seems to help. I just put kitchen roll in every day to mop up the water that collects.

Great thread. Keep them coming.

LaBefana · 29/06/2023 10:52

@CharlotteStreetW1

I have a left handed screwdriver.

I haven't heard that one for years, along with striped paint, long weight, red lamp oil, etc.

Turn your bedsheets inside out and it's easier to flip on the duvet

I’m being stupid but I don’t understand this.

My guess is it's turn the quilt cover inside out. Reach inside and put your hands in both corners and grab the top corners of the quilt and flip the quilt cover over it so it's facing the right way. Or at least that's how I interpreted it.

washingmachinewoes · 29/06/2023 11:17

The out ER signs - are mostly on the east coast (Skegness is where I've seen them) there are the emergency route signs to get you away from the flat areas that flood, as the most obvious routes are not always the roads you would follow.

I don't understand this. So the hooks caught on the bra saver. Standard. And? In order for anything to get shredded, the bag must have then caught on something - what?

Options

  • it caught on the machine - bra would have been ruined anyway, machine might have been
  • it caught on something else which should have been on a bag
  • ?

This all looks self-justifying, it's not. I am happy to change my ways and demonstrate to DH that he is wrong but I am genuinely trying to understand!

Open a jar easily by using a hooked bottle opener (like the ones you find on the end of a tin opener) under the lid. Pull up and the jar lid will pop and be easier to open.

pickledandpuzzled · 29/06/2023 11:33

@PrueRamsay you need something flexible like a piece of wire- ideally a pipe cleaner!

A long strip of garden wire, or that sandwich bag twist wire will do it.

Something thin enough to go round corners.
