DuncinToffee · 26/06/2023 14:10

In the voice of Cpl Jones.

"Don't panic Capt Sunak"

"Hold your nerve"

"They don't like it up em".

We have a choice between extremely bad alternative outcomes

I have a question (sorry if there's an obvious answer)

But if Labour abolish the HoL does that mean things like this illegal migrant bill would get passed without scrutiny? Because right now they seem like a good thing. Confused

This is from the Times a couple of days ago - rings true.

Times read:

Despair, torpor and apathy on Tory benches as numbers on economy, migration & in polls head wrong way

Red Wall Tory MP: ‘I’m working on my CV. It’s dead.

‘There are no new ideas, levelling up has disappeared, 5 pledges are going backwards’

A former Cabinet minister said their main priority now is to limit scale of defeat:

‘We are playing to be a credible opposition now

‘It’s the difference between 180 Tory MPs and 250. If it’s 180 we’re out for ten years’

twitter.com/steven_swinford/status/1675055673682395137?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

Doesn't really explain why they are trying to make mileage out of Grey. They seemed super happy with her report when they got it.

180 is quite optimistic isn’t it?

Lee Anderson is the new Lazarus. Just two hours after we were told at New Conservatives launch that he was too ill to appear, his identical twin was spotted at Westminster tube

Does he share his braincell with his twin?

They would replace it with a smaller, democratically elected upper chamber.

Labour's plan to 'abolish' the House of Lords: what exactly has been proposed – and the chances Keir Starmer will adopt it

Gordon Brown’s proposed elected upper chamber could protect plans to decentralise power, but it’s arguably not in the Labour party’s interest to introduce one.

Thanks.

I'm glad to see there is plans to have an alternative

"180 is quite optimistic isn’t it?"

It is a bit.

L1ttledrummergirl · 03/07/2023 21:06

One of the reasons I like the hereditary system that we had in the Lords (before the tories stuffed it with their cronies), is that they had the long term in mind, rather than the short term thinking we get with the our MPS. Part of the checks and balances of our system. Today, they did the right thing for Britain.

I'm sure Zahawi can explain - it looks like a similar set up.
& if it's fine for Bamford and Blyth to bankroll a PM why shouldn't Sunak feel the benefits too??

This. I used to be completely against the HoL but between the oldies with the long view and the people who have been put in there to recognise their expertise in different areas I changed my mind. Before these Tories, as you say.

Notonthestairs · 04/07/2023 08:30

Shouldn't be a huge surprise she kept the receipts. The most important thing is that the media parroted what the Government wanted them to. Headlines over substance.

NEW: Sue Gray’s fightback: her union @FDAGenSec wrote 3 times in less than 3 weeks - without success - to discover basic details about inquiry incl process used, who would make decision & mechanism for any appeal.

Letter seen by @guardian says: “You cannot undertake such an investigation without proper procedure. Despite all of our requests, you have not only refused to indicate which process you are following but you have failed to even address the lack of this in any of your letters.”

They're so obsessed with kangaroo courts they've decided to make one themselves.

Notonthestairs · 04/07/2023 09:25

Sunak is off to the Liaison Committee today.
I like it when they actually turn up to these things!

There are no depths low enough, are there?

DuncinToffee · 04/07/2023 10:01

No there aren't

Johnnny Mercer on Sky claiming that using foodbanks is "a personal choice" by people trying to manage their budget.

OP posts:
Blossomtoes · 04/07/2023 10:06

That’s really disappointing. I always thought Mercer was one of the half decent ones left. I’d love to know how many food bank users are veterans and watch him pick the bones out of that.

I didn't quite understand why the interviewer of Mercer on Radio 4 this morning did not ask the obvious question.
If boat crossing by Albanians are massively down and we were led to believe last year they made up a significant proportion of the crossing, how is it that crossings overall are only down 10% on last year?

AdamRyan · 04/07/2023 10:40

That has really really upset me.

AdamRyan · 04/07/2023 10:40

That has really really upset me.

I know. It’s just vindictive and spiteful. There must be some kind of awful human being test for Home Office ministers.

IClaudine · 04/07/2023 10:56

I think anyone who proposes such a thing is some kind of sociopath. It is horrible. (I bet I get told off for saying that!)

Notonthestairs · 04/07/2023 10:59

"The Minister said pics of cartoons and animals must be removed and that staff should make sure they are painted over, as they give an impression of welcoming, which Mr Jenrick didn’t want to show."

Just so unnecessary.

But then this is the same Jenrick who sat next Richard Desmond at dinner and then went on to overrule Local Housing to arranged a speedy approval of a £1 billion luxury development to enable Desmond to avoid paying £40 million community infrastructure levy which would have been used for local schools & doctor's surgeries.

Two weeks later Desmond made a donation to the Conservative Party.

Eventually Jenrick was forced to reverse the decision.

So he's never exactly taken the high road.

Notonthestairs · 04/07/2023 11:07

Of course it was also Jenrick along with Sunak and Dowden (the three musketeers) that produced an Op Ed piece for the Times suggesting only Johnson could save the Conservative Party.

All three received promotions when Johnson became leader. They all lent in to the culture war populist gibberish. Although maybe Dowden lent the hardest!

But I think Jenrick can take some responsibility for much of the mess we are in now.
