So my ds(11) went to a football party yesterday. The minute we got in the car he asked to go the shop for a drink as he was so thirsty.
Party was at the local astro pitch, party room included that has 2 ovens, hob, 2 toasters, 2 microwaves and 2 fridges. Most parents bring in frozen pizzas and chips and cook them or order in pizzas.
Kids were running around for 2 hours in hot weather they were not offered any drinks during that time.
He said in the "party room" they got 1 small bottle of water (250ml) and a small slice of birthday cake. They only went into the room 10 minutes before I arrived to collect him.
When I went in the mother was packing up the cake which looked like there was about 3/4's left. I thought the kids must have had enough food that they didnt want cake. And parents cleaned up very quickly. Kids were all quiet(14 11/12 yr old boys) who are normally very loud at parties. Kids were just sitting waiting to be collected.Turns out they got a very very skinny slice, described by ds as thinner then a slice of bread.
Ended up bringing him to Mcdonalds as a treat and we seen 2 other parents of kids that were at the same party getting their kids food.

It's not good for kids to eat large quantities of cake

Winnerturkeydinner · 25/06/2023 16:17

There should have been more drink but people (even teenagers) can last 2 hours without food.

Isn’t it just.

Well yes it is a bit unusual but hey ho, he survived.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 25/06/2023 16:21

I'd expect food at a kids' party. But then I am not a typical Mumsnetter, in that I eat actual meals instead of sucking on an alfalfa sprout and fully expect heaps of cake, iced party rings and mountains of chips at every celebratory occasion.

FloweryName · 25/06/2023 16:22

Selfish hosting from those parents. They wanted to be able to say they’d given their child a party but didn’t want to pay for it.

Flurbegurb · 25/06/2023 16:22

Sounds very unusual and pretty rubbish for a party. Would have been better for the party organisers to make it clear food was not being provided other than cake. Most kids/parents expect food at kids birthday parties.

Pkhsvd · 25/06/2023 16:22

What time was it over? I’d expect drinks to be provided throughout especially as it’s so hot and yes they can survive without food but the norm is that food is provided at parties so I’d be surprised

BillyBraggisnotmylover · 25/06/2023 16:23

Maybe they couldn’t afford it but still wanted their kid to have a party?

🤣🤣 I swear MN isn't real sometimes.

Op I can't believe you took him to McDonalds. You should have taken him for a massive salad, far healthier.

My kids wouldn't have been hungry, they only eat 2 crumbs a day. Is there something wrong with your ds?

YANBU, I would have been annoyed

Most people would! Sometimes it’s like competitive Puritanism on here.

darkmodeon · 25/06/2023 16:24

Most kids have water bottles too.

Evenstar · 25/06/2023 16:25

Rude and inhospitable, I know money is tight for many at the moment, but it would have been better to host at home for just a few friends and provide proper food and drink.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/06/2023 16:25

It’s not a party without egg butties and party rings.

Parties are expensive! They are going to get more and more like this with col

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 25/06/2023 16:26

Depends what time the party was, was it over a meal time?

Drinks, i always send my DD with a water bottle, especially if they are doing something sporty

Their kid wanted a football party presumably

It's even worse to run around in the sun for 2 hours without food or drink

GemmaFoster · 25/06/2023 16:28

That’s a shame. I would definitely expect a few sandwiches to fuel the kids. Doesn’t need to cost a fortune. Plus a couple of jugs of squash.

HermioneWeasley · 25/06/2023 16:28

Completely inhospitable. If you can’t afford to host people, don’t have a party

illiterato · 25/06/2023 16:28

If my kid was invited to a sports themed party I’d always send them with a water bottle anyway. Food does seem a bit light but depends what time. If it was 2-4pm I think a snack is fine.

LosingMyPancakes · 25/06/2023 16:29

Was it a party though? Because it sounds like the parents just booked an activity for a 2 hour slot and a snack like cake in my opinion would be fine. Unless they made a point of calling it a party and included invites or whatever.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 25/06/2023 16:30

I think the parents were rude
If they couldn't afford party food, at least put out jugs of squash and biscuits on a hot day
It's not expectation's it's human courtesy

WonderfulUsername · 25/06/2023 16:31

Sounds like the parents were on a very very tight budget.

They could've given them tap water though and stuck out a few bowls of crisps etc.
