No party food or drink provided

So my ds(11) went to a football party yesterday. The minute we got in the car he asked to go the shop for a drink as he was so thirsty.
Party was at the local astro pitch, party room included that has 2 ovens, hob, 2 toasters, 2 microwaves and 2 fridges. Most parents bring in frozen pizzas and chips and cook them or order in pizzas.
Kids were running around for 2 hours in hot weather they were not offered any drinks during that time.
He said in the "party room" they got 1 small bottle of water (250ml) and a small slice of birthday cake. They only went into the room 10 minutes before I arrived to collect him.
When I went in the mother was packing up the cake which looked like there was about 3/4's left. I thought the kids must have had enough food that they didnt want cake. And parents cleaned up very quickly. Kids were all quiet(14 11/12 yr old boys) who are normally very loud at parties. Kids were just sitting waiting to be collected.Turns out they got a very very skinny slice, described by ds as thinner then a slice of bread.
Ended up bringing him to Mcdonalds as a treat and we seen 2 other parents of kids that were at the same party getting their kids food.

It's not good for kids to eat large quantities of cake

😂😂😂

Its not unreasonable to expect a decent size of cake at a kids party. Even if the kids had their own water bottles, surely after running around in the sun for 2 hours they would've drank it all? Do you even have kids? Both your statements seem so weird

I do but I appreciate mine is a lot younger so I probably haven't got the experience others have. I genuinely don't think it's wrong to stick to the suggested serving size on a box of cake.

ThursdayFreedom · 25/06/2023 17:00

@ImaMumtoaboy

did DS enjoy himself?

Id have no problem if parents couldn't afford or didn't want to put on a party spread, but it is a stupid time if day to host a party if you can't/don't want to feed the kids!

even with said though I wouldn't be bothered BUT I think they should make it known (but I think party invites should be clear what's happening about food).

They should have provided free flowing drinks though, water is fine, but squash is very cheap. They could have asked all the kids to bring a drink bottle.

the 'tightness' with the cake slices seems a bit weird though, taking home 3/4 of the cake, but maybe they were 'saving it' for a family party/dinner later on.

though in this heat 🤮

I've heard they explode like Augustus gloop if they eat too much !

I thought that was Mr Creosote? AG got sucked up the cocoa pipe and ended up longer and thinner.

(Misses point of thread).

Jenn3112 · 25/06/2023 17:02

I'd have expected all the kids to bring a water bottle, its quite unlikely they would want to interrupt playing repeatedly to go inside and get water, plus you would go through a huge number of plastic cups.

Not great communication from the hosts about the lack of food but hardly a big deal.

LlynTegid · 25/06/2023 17:02

@darkmodeon It's a lot worse for them to eat McDonalds.

The lack of more drinks being offered was poor in my opinion. It is not as if summer is unexpected, how many years have the druids been going to Stonehenge?

It may not be a matter of cost

I don't offer any food at my DD's parties as then they can spend the whole time doing the actual activity, otherwise it's 1hour of activity and 1hour of food which is not what kids normally want.

It would have been better for them to say no food, so parents were prepared, and they should have stated all kids to come with a bottle of water.

Sorry but you’ve got teenage boys running around playing footy for 2 hours, over what most families think of as lunch time, and you think it’s fine for them not to have anything to eat at all
bybtime parents get them home and then expected to feed them, you’ll have a pretty moody hangry teenager whose blood sugars are a tad low, and is dehydrated
if someone organised a party from 12-2 I’d think it was because there was a birthday lunch provided like burger, pizza or something .
pits bloody outrageous and inhospitable to host an vent for anyone between 12-2 and not ensure that food was taken care of 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦‍♀️

pilates · 25/06/2023 17:04

That sounds rubbish. Drinks should have been flowing particularly as a very hot day.

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 25/06/2023 17:04

If they couldn't have afforded the food they should have had a party not over lunchtime. Like 3-5.

It would have cost next to nothing to provide water or squash

CastleTurrets · 25/06/2023 17:04

IMO if you can't afford to look after your guests - then don't host a party! No one is FORCED to host a party.

At the VERY LEAST there should have been UNLIMITED amounts of water and squash. You can pick up huge bottles of water in Lidl/Aldi for pennies. It's a basic necessity when children are running around playing football, particularly in hotter weather.

If food is not being provided it should be made clear on the invitation so that parents can ensure their children are fed before going. 12-2 is lunchtime for most. I think it's fair to assume that, unless otherwise stated, food will be provided at a birthday party.

I don't know about mcdonalds but I'm guessing thye have recommended servings too

I did say that the parents should have said on the invite that there wouldn't be any food and to bring own water for kids.

Then if parents knew, they could have done an early lunch at 11/11:30.

2hrs is not much time for an activity if you waste an hour of it doing food

Jesus H Christ. Really? This is your response? Mumsnet has peaked right here 🙄

it sounds like a pretty miserable party op, I agree. And nothing to drink in that heat? Ridiculous!

AtomicBlondeRose · 25/06/2023 17:06

Well both my DC would be beyond starving by 2pm especially after playing football for ages and would be exceedingly grumpy. Very poor form. I don’t care what the excuse is. You can buy a few packs of hot dogs and rolls, and 30 packs of crisps are £3.99 in Lidl so you could feed a room full of kids for under £20.

SeeingSpots · 25/06/2023 17:07

Not sure what your fixation with recommend servings is given it's not necessary to the op but a word of advice for the future teenage boys very rarely eat just the recommend serving suggestion, they are like food hoovers and will happily eat the whole portion and probably still be hungry and the size of a rake.

nottodaytomorrow · 25/06/2023 17:08

Oh my goodness OP i hope your son is ok? Sounds absolutely horrendous. Those poor children.

Guiltypleasures001 · 25/06/2023 17:08

Even if someone's hard up how much is a couple of cheap big bottles of squash
Two big bags of oven chips and a few frozen pizzas? 20 quid from iceland maybe
It's bad form and mean, I assume any presents we're taken away with the cake too
Also they had a year to save up a quid a week for the bloody party

Maddy70 · 25/06/2023 17:09

TBF the party was football. They had been given a water bottle. They can always be refilled at football centres

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/06/2023 17:09

I have no idea about serving size as I never get cake out of a box but maybe if they'd had a few sandwiches they wouldn't have wanted more cake. I have 4 teenage grandsons who are sporty and they can put away enormous amounts of food while not putting on an ounce of fat. Calorie needs depend on age size and degree of activity not what it says on a box.

AlltheFs · 25/06/2023 17:10

That’s not a party.

Tight bastards. If they can’t afford
to host properly then they shouldn’t do it.

Xeren · 25/06/2023 17:11

But I bet the host still expected birthday gifts?😂

Harebrain · 25/06/2023 17:13

That’s not a party! My DD went to a sleepover once where parents were asked to collect their children at 10am. On arrival, the hosts were having bacon sandwiches but the guests weren’t offered anything. Not even a slice of toast. It was pure tight-fistedness.

Whinge · 25/06/2023 17:13

Maddy70 · 25/06/2023 17:09

TBF the party was football. They had been given a water bottle. They can always be refilled at football centres

From the OP they only got the drink right near the end, so there wasn't any time to refill it. He said in the "party room" they got 1 small bottle of water (250ml) and a small slice of birthday cake. They only went into the room 10 minutes before I arrived to collect him.
