So my ds(11) went to a football party yesterday. The minute we got in the car he asked to go the shop for a drink as he was so thirsty.
Party was at the local astro pitch, party room included that has 2 ovens, hob, 2 toasters, 2 microwaves and 2 fridges. Most parents bring in frozen pizzas and chips and cook them or order in pizzas.
Kids were running around for 2 hours in hot weather they were not offered any drinks during that time.
He said in the "party room" they got 1 small bottle of water (250ml) and a small slice of birthday cake. They only went into the room 10 minutes before I arrived to collect him.
When I went in the mother was packing up the cake which looked like there was about 3/4's left. I thought the kids must have had enough food that they didnt want cake. And parents cleaned up very quickly. Kids were all quiet(14 11/12 yr old boys) who are normally very loud at parties. Kids were just sitting waiting to be collected.Turns out they got a very very skinny slice, described by ds as thinner then a slice of bread.
Ended up bringing him to Mcdonalds as a treat and we seen 2 other parents of kids that were at the same party getting their kids food.

Oh ffs, we have an almond parent in our presence 🤣

Whats an almond parent? Seriously its not. The portion size of cake is smaller than most people probably thing judging from people's reactions

RotundRuby · 25/06/2023 16:44

If they couldn't afford the extra £10 for a few more drinks and at least some crisps they couldn't afford the party.

Alternatively they could have suggested bringing snacks instead of gifts or at least said bring your own drinks.

Sounds joyless, I'd be ashamed to be such a poor host.

They could have done squash and crisps and a few snacks at least.

I know they dont have to provide food but honestly most kids expect it.
It was from 12 to 2 so over lunchtime.
The invitation said birthday party.
They could have easily mentioned there was no food or drinks been provided.
They moved to the area about 2 years ago and their son has been to enough parties that has provided food and drinks.
My ds said 1 of the kids asked for more cake and was told no.

If it was 12-2 then you wouldn’t have expected them to eat directly beforehand as they would be running around and 2 is quite late. I would have sent my child with a large bottle of water in this weather but I do agree that they should have made it very clear on the invite what they were providing. I can only assume because it was an odd time of day for such an active party that food wasn’t really practical.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 25/06/2023 16:47

It may not be a matter of cost

I don't offer any food at my DD's parties as then they can spend the whole time doing the actual activity, otherwise it's 1hour of activity and 1hour of food which is not what kids normally want.

It would have been better for them to say no food, so parents were prepared, and they should have stated all kids to come with a bottle of water.

Starlightstarbright2 · 25/06/2023 16:47

my D’s would not have been happy - fluids at least

cushioncovers · 25/06/2023 16:48

The host should have provided more drinks. A bottle of squash and plastic cups is all that was needed. Unless it was over a mealtime there was no need for the host to provide food.

Agreed squash and some snacks costs less than a tenner and would have been perfectly adequate had they not wanted to provide pizza etc.

It's very poor hosting and anyone saying otherwise is just being contrary.

You really think someone who can happily spend £10 on a football and the associated kit can’t afford to make sandwiches? I take you think the family will live on nothing but cake, as clearly they can’t even afford sandwiches to feed themselves.

I can imagine a family close to pay day may he like shoot we've only got enough for cake or sandwhiches

Good point. 2 hours of football vs 1 hour football and one hour eating.

No I didn't I said it's bad for them to eat lots of cake. The OP was complaining about serving size! The hosts might have been taking the instructions on the box seriously.

That's a good idea. BYO snacks

wormshuffled · 25/06/2023 16:52

It's not good for kids to eat large quantities of cake

Totally missing the point.

I am sure they would have appreciated anything. Even carrot sticks.

FarTooHotForMe · 25/06/2023 16:53

That’s weird as the party was over a meal time, I would expect unlimited water and some sort of filling savoury food, especially as they are doing sport.

Parties are expensive! They are going to get more and more like this with col

Well just don’t call them parties then. Call them “we’ve organised a football game for little Johnny’s birthday but they’ll not be any food or drink provided, make sure they bring water bottle”
if you can’t afford a party, which historically meant a celebratory gathering focusing on food and drink , bloody well don’t say you’re having one.

I've heard they explode like Augustus gloop if they eat too much !

Op sounds like a stingy party of course they needed something to eat I bet the parents are the talk of WHATSAPP 😄

PoliticallyIncorrectHitchling · 25/06/2023 16:56

darkmodeon · 25/06/2023 16:24

Most kids have water bottles too.

Its not unreasonable to expect a decent size of cake at a kids party. Even if the kids had their own water bottles, surely after running around in the sun for 2 hours they would've drank it all? Do you even have kids? Both your statements seem so weird

illiterato · 25/06/2023 16:58

Honestly, I’d file this under “bit weird but ultimately not that much of a big deal”. If he enjoyed the football that’s the main thing.

ButImNotOldEnough · 25/06/2023 16:58

Well at least your DS knows not to attend any more parties thrown for this boy. Lesson learned for him
