No party food or drink provided

So my ds(11) went to a football party yesterday. The minute we got in the car he asked to go the shop for a drink as he was so thirsty.
Party was at the local astro pitch, party room included that has 2 ovens, hob, 2 toasters, 2 microwaves and 2 fridges. Most parents bring in frozen pizzas and chips and cook them or order in pizzas.
Kids were running around for 2 hours in hot weather they were not offered any drinks during that time.
He said in the "party room" they got 1 small bottle of water (250ml) and a small slice of birthday cake. They only went into the room 10 minutes before I arrived to collect him.
When I went in the mother was packing up the cake which looked like there was about 3/4's left. I thought the kids must have had enough food that they didnt want cake. And parents cleaned up very quickly. Kids were all quiet(14 11/12 yr old boys) who are normally very loud at parties. Kids were just sitting waiting to be collected.Turns out they got a very very skinny slice, described by ds as thinner then a slice of bread.
Ended up bringing him to Mcdonalds as a treat and we seen 2 other parents of kids that were at the same party getting their kids food.

I would expect ready access to water throughout, but not food. Nothing wrong with just doing cake at a party. The point is to play. I always send kids fully fed before a party.

2 hours without drink, I agree.

But without food?? Confused

Not much of a party without food, more like a game of football.

They had a bottle of water and most kids have water bottles

They had a bottle of water 10 minutes before the end and why would anyone bother to bring a water bottle to a party. Confused

Yep, and unfortunately that's the lasting memory of the party. It doesn't matter how much fun they had, all those who attended are going to remember is how hungry and thirsty they were.

Depends on the kids.
Mine never mention the food, for them it's all about the activity.
They both love football so two hours of football and some cake would suit them just fine.
I would send with a water bottle anyway and as I mentioned upthread, I would expect a heads up on the catering front so I could be prepared.

Fundays12 · 25/06/2023 17:32

This is poor hosting especially over lunchtime. The kids must have been so hungry and dehydrated. Personally even at a 10-12 party I provide lots of snack and drinks. At an after school trampoline party ds1 had that ran till 6pm I provided pizza, sausage rolls, sausages, sandwiches, crisps, chocolate, biscuits, cake and drinks for everyone including the adults as it was over dinner time. If you host you provide food and drink in my view.

itsmylife7 · 25/06/2023 17:32

Not to provide water is diabolical in this weather. How could the parents not have thought of thirsty kids.

BungleandGeorge · 25/06/2023 17:32

people are being obtuse, of course there should be food for a party from 12-2. Not providing drinks in this weather is just dangerous.
the whole point of hosting a party is that you have to actually host your guests.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 25/06/2023 17:32

Yep it's definitely a bit weird. Hopefully they still have fun hanging out & playing footie together & they got a macca's on the way home. No harm done.

ImaMumtoaboy · 25/06/2023 16:39

I know they dont have to provide food but honestly most kids expect it.
It was from 12 to 2 so over lunchtime.
The invitation said birthday party.
They could have easily mentioned there was no food or drinks been provided.
They moved to the area about 2 years ago and their son has been to enough parties that has provided food and drinks.
My ds said 1 of the kids asked for more cake and was told no.

I think you should shame them on your local social media OP, turn them into pariahs. Perhaps get your kid and his mates to bully the birthday boy. Will that be enough to make up for it?

Because it's standard to bring water when you're playing sport?

diddl · 25/06/2023 17:33

Seems unusual to me Op.

That said it was only 2hrs-probably wanted all the time to go on the activity?

Not a problem to have a late lunch every so often.

Cornishclio · 25/06/2023 17:33

It isn't a party if no food or drink offered. It is just a kick about.

YoucancallmeKAREN · 25/06/2023 17:33

darkmodeon · 25/06/2023 16:16

It's not good for kids to eat large quantities of cake

It's birthday cake and they have been running around for 2 hours so they need plenty to drink. If you invite kids to a party they expect to be fed.

They may have been playing a sport but it was a birthday party. You expect there to be drinks provided. A child shouldn't have to bring a water bottle to ensure they have access to water.

Exactly and as several others have said they should have just met up at the local park and everyone would have been fine with a slice of cake because there were no expectations of it being a party.

A party actually requires some hosting and anyone arguing this is fine would u suspect in real life never dream of hosting a party without actually putting some thought into the guests needs especially if being held over lunchtime.

Greenfree · 25/06/2023 17:36

This is really has form! There 100% should have been drinks available throughout. If they couldn't afford food then just some snacks or something although you can get pizzas for £1 at Iceland. It sounds badly planned. If you get invited to another by them I would send a polite message enquiring about whether you should feed DS first

VisionsOfSplendour · 25/06/2023 17:36

darkmodeon · 25/06/2023 17:24

Right.

All I am saying is there is a recommended serving size for cake. The parents may have been sticking to this and that is why it is tiny. Because the recommended serving size is small because it is not good for kids to have lots of cake.

Ok, that's wasnt clear to me from your preachy sounding statement with no context

Unless the cake was to serve about 50 people its un likely to be the case here anyway as the OP says there was 3/4s of it left

Maybe though it was of the large Costco celebration cakes with the morish frosting

ImaMumtoaboy · 25/06/2023 17:38

The cake was homemade so no serving suggestions on the box.
My ds has been to football parties before and they normally get 2 hours of playing ball and room for 30 minutes. 1 of the parents or another adult would go in and put the pizzas in the oven so they are ready.
Most of the parties my ds has been to including soft play, outdoor activites, bowling, lazer tag and rollerskating the activity is 1 hr 30 and food for 30 minutes never has he been to a 2 hour party and sat eating for an hour.
The birthday boy has been to my home many times between the hours of 10a.m and 3/4 pm and if its over lunchtime the mother would text to see if I was providing lunch.
Its just strange to have a kids party and not provide them with something at all.
The kids are all of the age were its either money or vouchers in cards and this is anything between £10-£20.
No my ds didnt starve but the fact he mentioned the size of the cake he thought it was strange

*this is really bad form. I wish there was an edit button!

Sotiredmjmmy · 25/06/2023 17:40

For one of my DC this year we very specifically booked a party time that was inbetween meal times so that no food was to be provided, we did provide plenty of drinks though, cake and sweet bags

I know my own dc would have picked only as it was shortly after lunch and would have been a lot of food waste and a tick box that I wasn’t willing to go along with. If cake and entertainment then really no definite that other food be provided but think depends bit on time of day - no excuse on lack of drinks/water though

Older boys and a football party sounds bit more off

Other DCs party ran into tea time so we provided food.

Actually for a yr7 football party I totally would.

Fucks sake some of the responses on here 🙄
If invites were sent out for a party that was 12 till 2! then food and drink should have been provided. Christ this site sometimes 😂

darkmodeon · 25/06/2023 16:51

No I didn't I said it's bad for them to eat lots of cake. The OP was complaining about serving size! The hosts might have been taking the instructions on the box seriously.

Maths Problem
There were 14 boys at a party who each had a slice of the birthday cake. Three-quarters of the cake was left over & nobody was allowed seconds. If each boy received the correct sized portion, how many portions did the cake contain?

Answer: 56
