I hate it, when will it cool down. Early 20s would be fine.

It has suddenly become a lot fresher in South Yorkshire. We got up to 27 degrees earlier, then late afternoon it became very windy and the temperature has dropped by 12 degrees.

We didn't get the thunderstorm we were promised.

Another thing it worries me is, there were news about water shortage even in UK already. How can people be so happy just because it doesn't affect you personally? It's absurd, tbh.

Just enjoy it if you want. But please don't complain about the consequences of unusually hot weather somewhere in the world affecting your life indirectly, when food shortage etc happens because of it.

The SE doesn't have actual water shortages though? They have a lack of processing capacity. Reservoir and aquifer capacity is in pretty good shape but that particular water company has insufficient water treatment capacity to meet demand.

And water shortages at this time of year would generally be because of an unusually dry winter and spring, like we had last year. Same for growing seasons going weird - it's almost never summers. So maybe you should reserve your ire for those who celebrate dry, crisp winter days?

JassyRadlett · 26/06/2023 07:27

And this weather isn't 'unusually hot' - this is pretty standard for British summers over time. I'm with you when the temperature actually gets unusually high. But a few weeks of temperatures in the high 20s, maybe nudging 30 once or twice? Not one of the horsemen of the apocalypse when you look at historical weather records.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/06/2023 07:46

By definition, if there isn't enough water to meet demand, there is a water shortage. The various factors, include the incredibly hot and very dry summer last year, lack of water to recharge supplies and insufficient infrastructure.

In terms of Junes temperatures, they may not be record breaking, but we are running almost 3 degrees above the mean central england temperature this month so far. (2.9c)

Once schools finish for summer, normal rainy service will resume

That's fair as a definition but even SE Water have been very clear that the current restrictions are largely because they don't have the processing capacity to deal with the change in usage patterns caused by increased WFH, not because they don't have enough raw water available.

JassyRadlett · 26/06/2023 08:00

And yes, totally agree and accept that these are above average temperatures but by definition we will always have above average temperatures.

And yes, we are going to have more of those, and they're going to be way above average, and it's because of climate change and climate change is shit.

But I also find the mindset that you are not allowed to find any tiny positives from a net very shit situation really odd and dismal. It's like looking at the Covid situation and saying - yes, that was incredibly shit and I wish it hadn't happened. The rapid societal changes have had some peripheral impacts that have had positive impacts on some aspects of my own life, and I am 100% not allowed to appreciate or be grateful for those small positives in a net shitty situation.

It's not like the people enjoying (fairly normal) warm weather are burning coal in the back garden trying to accelerate the process, or cheering on temperature rises.

Anyway, folk will be returned to the usual dismal British summer soon enough, judging by the forecast.

RampantIvy · 26/06/2023 08:14

We are back to below 20 degrees for the foreseeable now.

Oh, and we had a wet winter and spring. Ladybower reservoir was at its lowest level I have ever seen it in October, and running over the overspill by January.

Abracadabra12345 · 26/06/2023 08:21

After a very hot 32 degrees in the shade yesterday here in the SE, I am delighted that today is forecast to be a comparatively chilly max if 23 degrees with a fresh breeze! And holding on to those lower (but not low) temperatures. Plenty of sunshine, still, today

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/06/2023 08:22

RampantIvy There are graphs for rainfall. They show overall very dry winter a NW (dry)/ SE (wet) divide for spring rainfall with central areas overall having a very average Spring. So it's interesting to read what you say about Ladybower.

I guess on reflection (rushing!) perhaps not a very dry winter, but at least a dry winter.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/06/2023 14:41

It turns out that this will be the hottest UK June on record.

And you still get people saying, ' it's just summer, get over it!' Hmm

Or "Its only a couple of weeks so just enjoy it"

bumblingbovine49 · 27/06/2023 19:46

I like the hot weather but to be fair to the op, we had temperatures of 32deg on Sunday here and it has consistently been in the mid-high 20s.for quite a while in the SE, which is quite warm for June

It is.supposed to be cooler this week though and it has been since yesterday anyway

I.havent had much trouble sleeping because of the heat though. I tend not to.strugfle to sleep unless it is above 30deg

SirChenjins · 27/06/2023 20:33

It was 15 here yesterday and so cold and wet that I had the heating on for a little while today - the UK average might be up but I can’t say it’s been exactly blistering here in Edinburgh. We’re back down to the mid teens for the foreseeable so yes, I will enjoy a few weeks of nice weather.
