At least one woman has been down on it.

I said: I'm sure there are one or two [women] but it would be a tiny number compared to men, it's a very male bragging rights chest thumping idiotic activity.

Yes. Less than 2 hours in. It never got to titanic.

the only good thing about any of this is they won’t have known anything about it. Dead before anything could register. Awful for their families, and no bodies left to have a funeral. A massive massive tragedy.

That is a blessing.

RIP to them all 😢

I’m sure others have raised this but I simply can’t get my head around taking a 19 year old on a mission such as this. Some of those on board were thrill seekers and explorers - I don’t mean that unkindly - but they sought out near to the edge experiences and would perhaps have appreciated the risk. I just can’t get my head around taking my child on something as dangerous as this. I don’t intend this to be judgemental etc I literally cannot comprehend it.

Why do people on MN refer to a 19 year old as 'a child'? I doubt that he was forced to go on this amazing trip, he was probably very excited about it.

L13422 · 22/06/2023 23:10

Does it say if it imploded are contact was first loss or later? I can’t see the full article

Stickybackplasticbear · 22/06/2023 23:13

I'm absolutely blown away by people being so dramatic about stupid rich people doing rich people shit. The time and money which has gone into trying to rescue them from their own stupidity and people are fawning over their poor families.

Maybe with all their money they should / could have done something less redic.

It's also a gross and unethical thing for them to do in the first place. It's a site of massive tragedy. Not a tourist attractions. The people saying its so tragic need a good re examination of their moral compass.

Seems he wasn't excited at all...

The son of a Pakistani businessman who is now presumed dead along with his father after their Titanic tour submersible imploded was terrified of the daring expedition, his aunt has revealed. /.../
In an interview published before the tragic developments were announced, Dawood’s sister Azmeh Dawood told NBC News that her nephew was absolutely scared, and only agreed to go on the expedition because it was important to his “Titanic-obsessed” father. Suleman reportedly told family members he was concerned about the tour and “wasn’t very up for it.”

“The U.S. Navy conducted an analysis of acoustic data and detected an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of where the Titan submersible was operating when communications were lost,” a senior U.S. Navy official told The Wall Street Journal in a statement. “While not definitive, this information was immediately shared with the Incident Commander to assist with the ongoing search and rescue mission.”

Oh god that's so sad 😢 no of course he wasn't a child but he was only just an adult, how totally irresponsible of the father, the poor poor mum 😔

SkyAboveSoBlue · 22/06/2023 23:16

Well said. These people thrive on awful events, we’ve seen it before on here. Fake ‘devastation’, pretend experts and emojis. I bet these are the same posters as on the NB 10 threads and others like it. If you AS the usernames that are ‘so upset’ a lot are on other threads having a laugh. Or they e name changed do you can’t see they are and they can pretend to be traumatised and come out with grief vulture bullshit.

I have to agree. I presume people who become obsessed and say they’re devastated or feel they have to come to terms with it have some issues in their own lives though. It’s not healthy to be so obsessed, we wouldn’t cope if things happening to others that we didn’t know, affected us to this degree. I don’t know if it’s attention seeking or maybe their own bad mental health.

On one of the previous threads, a poster stated that if there had been an implosion, SOSUS would have detected it. And they were right.

This probably explains (as we also speculated on the previous thread) why the US weren't interested in getting Magallan over asap (despite OceanQuest making the request on Mon morning)....because they knew it was a recovery rather than rescue. Fair enough. Realistically they wouldn't have been able to say anything until it was confirmed today by the debris.

LodiDodi · 22/06/2023 23:20

I think that generally, people from wealthy/ very comfortable backgrounds have less understanding of risk than ordinary people. Even if something goes wrong for them in life, they are usually comfortable enough for it to not affect them as harshly as it does for the rest of us. I think that even when they're told straight 'there are huge risks here', part of them goes 'mehh, everything will be fine like it always is'.

Stickybackplasticbear · 22/06/2023 23:21

SirChenjins · 22/06/2023 21:47

He worked on a project on the wreck of the Titanic. Dear god!

Yep that's obviously what you meant. I don't really know much about stem subjects. But christ it was so obvious you meant this. Not sure if people are just thick or awkward....

changeme4this · 22/06/2023 23:21

I'm at a loss to understand why these experts who are coming forward now to say the submersible wasn't fit for purpose, couldn't put a stop to its activities before now. Surely there is some authority who monitors this type of craft movement/operators to ensure safety? Esp as it was taking on members of the public paying for the opportunity.

TokyoStories · 22/06/2023 23:22

The Indy’s headline is ambiguous. Hours after contact lost - as in, the implosion occurred hours after contact lost or the navy only heard it hours after contact was lost?

AnyaMarx · 22/06/2023 23:22

It's incredibly sad

But I do believe this is a message - the ship went down with many people on board - it is in effect a mass grave .

Not a visitor attraction or a destination for a jolly - It should be left in peace . And this proves it . It's too dangerous to do this ,

Leave it alone .

Rip to those people on the sub and my condolences to their poor families.

I never understood the argument that people shouldn't visit because it's a place of massive tragedy. Don't people visit Auschwitz and Pompeji?

DiscoBeat · 22/06/2023 23:23

People are still trying to come to terms with the shock, anger and grief. To some, it helps being able to write down the way they feel and discuss with others. There's no malice intended.
I get you. It's human nature for empathetic people to need to process events like this. As mothers too we've been worried about the teenager involved especially, and it helps to talk about it.

Some of the people on board were well know philanthropists, with lots of charitable endeavours and heads of their own charitable organisations. The Daewood foundation for instance was set up to provide educational support to poor families across Pakistan. So looks like they have done something less ‘redic’ with their money.

If the Titanic was visible via snorkelling, there would be a never-ending queue of people waiting to see it.

lljkk · 22/06/2023 23:28

It sounds like the military/coast guard types detected the loud bang that was implosion, but it could have been caused by many other things, too. So those with the knowledge kept that info out of public domain until now because the info might not be relevant.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/06/2023 23:28

Redic? Is this a new word?
