How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

No people aren't making any old shit up, they are referring to this I believe-

Former US Navy nuclear submarine commander David Marquet warns that hopeful sounds detected in recent hours may not be coming from the Titan submersible.
“I don’t think the noise is them, it could just be natural sounds. We’re hearing noises and more ships are coming into the area, and then we’re hearing more noises, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence,” he tells the BBC.

And I can post quotes from another half dozen former submarine officers who will say the opposite. There is nothing definitive on the sounds recorded, and they have used the sounds and their location as picked up by the buoys to guide their search.

waterlego · 22/06/2023 14:55

So jury is still very much out on the sounds then. It must be very difficult to ascertain where sound is coming from and what is making it.

Still… no one is making up “any old shit”…

Looks like ofwarren found a new thing to post emojis about. And the experts have become experts in all things ocean related now. They are clever. More jobs than Mrs Rabbit from Peppa Pig.

TennisWithDeborah · 22/06/2023 14:57

I was banking on “the sounds” coming from the five men because it allowed for some hope. What a sad story.

Have you read the last couple of threads?!

Hoolihan · 22/06/2023 14:57

Very much hope that the moment they lost contact was the same moment the craft imploded, killing them all instantly, and that the banging wasn't them.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 14:57

Apologies I haven't read through the last few comments on here. Is the general consensus now, that the sounds were not the men?

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 22/06/2023 14:58

The US has IUSS, but as it is really top secret nobody knows how good it is. There is a teeny possibility they know where the sub is. They are not going to tell us, but they might tell the submersible controllers where to start looking.

'GPS Stands for Global Positioning Satellites - so the satellites need to be able to "see" the thing they're tracking. A quick google just told me anything more than about 10cm of water and it stops working'

Yes, but you would think the navy, the US coastguard, submariner people anyone would have thought there is a need for a water able tracker. It seems bizarre that as a pp said planes have blackboxes with transponders that works in the water obviously but no equivalent for ocean going/submersible vessels?

Seeing the need for something and successfully developing the technology to make it are presumably two very different things.

waterlego · 22/06/2023 14:59

Is it the French former naval officer who is said to have expressed doubts about the safety of the expedition? I really can’t understand what possessed him to get on board in that case. I get that the ticket was expensive and perhaps he wouldn’t have easily got his money back if he’d decided not to go, but one must have a lot of money in the first place to be able to pay for such a thing. Surely if you can blow that much on something which is not an investment, you can also afford to lose that amount.

Dinkler · 22/06/2023 14:59

They haven't said what the sounds are definitively just that they are honing in on that area.

Don't think so, he has been on 30+ trips.

There isn’t a consensus at all, it seems. Still being hotly debated. Perhaps we will never find out. Awful for the families. Unspeakably awful.

milkyaqua · 22/06/2023 14:57

I have, yes.

However, the poster was referring, at least in part to the reports that the US Navy analysis had stated the sounds were “other ocean noises”. Which you then replied to saying people were making up any old shit. I was simply stating that I had shown a direct screenshot from Sky News and hadn’t made up anything.

Though I do understand there has been a lot of things said in these threads that have zero evidence to back up the claims.

TheTERFnextDoor · 22/06/2023 15:02

What is the helicopter for?

Dinkler · 22/06/2023 15:00

Yes, I read that he had made the trip many times before (perhaps in a different sub though?) but I thought I had also read that he had been having doubts before this trip. Perhaps that was one of the other passengers.

NotBotheredAnymore · 22/06/2023 15:02

Nvm, I shouldn't have been lazy and googled it. Apologies.

Deep Energy - A huge ship capable of laying pipes and cables at depths up to 3,000 metres offers a glimmer of hope in the search for a submersible missing in the North Atlantic with five people on board. Bahamas-flagged ship Deep Energy which specialises is helping with the search effort for the vessel since Sunday.

TokyoStories · 22/06/2023 15:05

@Snowy2022 PH Nargeolet had been on dives before. In the video @Locutus2000 posted you can hear him talking on one of them. He's listed as one of the crew on the website.

Dinkler · 22/06/2023 15:06

Lift helicopter taking off again from St Johns. US coastguard flying en route.

TokyoStories · 22/06/2023 15:06

Oh sorry, just realised that's already been covered.

Dinkler · 22/06/2023 15:07

TheTERFnextDoor · 22/06/2023 15:02

What is the helicopter for?

It's a medium weight lift helicopter. But can't say for sure that's what they are using it for. - A Sikorsky S92.

TokyoStories · 22/06/2023 15:07

One of the people having doubts about the safety was Hamish's friend, who pulled out. Not sure if that's who is being referred to.

It isn't like no-one is bothered. Water is not air. The electromagnetic waves that radar and GPS depend on don't travel through water, and we haven't been able to pull out a whole new electromagnetic spectrum that works the same but doesn't have this small disadvantage.

What does travel underwater is sound. Airline black box locators for underwater are ultrasonic-based. But there is a hell of a lot of sound going on down there. It's not like you can be sitting on land and pick up a black box from thousands of miles away. You have to be looking, and in the right area too. They also potentially won't work if it's too deep. Some airline black boxes are never found.
