We can discuss things that are horrifying and ghoulish, thanks for your opinion.
Migrant boats are sad too

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

This may be controversial post - but the point @Snowy2022 raises about the rush Oceangate seemed to be in is entirely in line with my own experience in working with (most) US teams - very much 'it is better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission'. The industry I work in - from the US side, speed to market seems to take precedence over almost anything else. Even when confronted with significant risk.

Sort of get it out there and then will fix the problems as they arise.

Very different to the approach of a lot of other cultures.

milkyaqua · 22/06/2023 14:42

I’m comforted to read the posts now saying that the reports of banging were not true.

This is not true. Some experts believe the timing of the bangs can only be explained by human efforts, and given it is standard submariner language to bang on the hour and half hour, find it hard to imagine a coincidental natural explanation. People are just posting any old shit.

SOBplus · 22/06/2023 14:42

US rescue sub has reached the Titanic wreck and searching for missing sub

Dinkler · 22/06/2023 14:42

Anyone watching flightradar? There's a lift helicopter over the site now.

SharkSip · 22/06/2023 14:42

I don't know the timeline of the original journey but I read it was supposed to be 2 hours to the bottom or 2 hours to reach the Titanic.

Apparantly, it was 1 hour 45 minutes into their journey when contact was lost with the mother ship.

Does that mean maybe they were close to the Titanic when contact or signal stopped?

What if they reached the Titanic within that time frame of 1 hour and 45 minutes and maybe they crashed into it and got stuck?

Was the Titanic explored for their vessel?

The whole sub journey to the Titanic is idiotic.

SadOrWickedFairy · 22/06/2023 14:42

I think the supplementary sub talk is more along the lines of an ROV following the submersible @Snowy2022 or at the very least waiting to be launched immediately if the submersible loses contact.

I know these things are expensive but the people who are interested in these things and want to go on the trips have the kind of money that could cover that cost.

The whole thing just seems very amateurish to me.

This is just after entering my mind just now and before I read your update.

Agree, if you haven't see the noise data then you don't know. Or have the released any further analysed info?

Rhondaa · 22/06/2023 14:43

'GPS Stands for Global Positioning Satellites - so the satellites need to be able to "see" the thing they're tracking. A quick google just told me anything more than about 10cm of water and it stops working'

Yes, but you would think the navy, the US coastguard, submariner people anyone would have thought there is a need for a water able tracker. It seems bizarre that as a pp said planes have blackboxes with transponders that works in the water obviously but no equivalent for ocean going/submersible vessels?

@milkyaqua thanks for that video. Do you know who/what is Deep Energy as they seemed to be very quick to respond.

To those asking about the Supplementary Sub- I read (but at the very start so memory fading now), that OceanGate would have required 3 years to build another similar Sub either to follow up on the Titan etc and they did not have time to wait I.e didn't t want to wait which is consistent with the approach taken by the CEO over the building of this flimsy sub and 'breaking all rules as he boasted' and ignoring all contrary advice over safety. It was experimental. an innovation as he put it. I recall thinking surely, the billionaire self-dubbed 'world explorer' could have waited for 3 years for the second sub to be in place?! It left me baffled.

The billionaire, wanting to go there, invited the French Titanic expert friend of his to show him the titanic- hence the poor guy (French-PH) wasn't really looking forward to this dive. I wish he had listened to his instincts. Also explains why the CEO would want to join the 2 so he maximised his experience and tour of the titanic with the expert. As many people have said, it's the father and dad duo many should feel more sorry for.

The French Diver was eerily prescient when he was filmed before the trip.

I so wish he’d listened to the instinct within .

As a child, I has to go into a tiny Cessna (?) plane to take aerial pics with Dad- we had to sign “ Danger of Death” stuff ( or Dad did)

I was hoping against hope for the flight to be called off- but it wasn’t.

Thankfully it was ok, but possibly those who had paid $250k felt they also couldn’t back out.

Peanutbutteryday · 22/06/2023 14:47

I’m confused that they remain hopeful even though oxygen has run out. I do hope a miricle can still happen

Sorry landed at St John's about 10 mins ago after about an hour over (roughly) wreck site.

Perhaps if they have conserved the oxygen in some way then they might have a bit more left.

Is the emergency oxygen in tanks then ? Is this how they would be conserving it ?

No people aren't making any old shit up, they are referring to this I believe-

Former US Navy nuclear submarine commander David Marquet warns that hopeful sounds detected in recent hours may not be coming from the Titan submersible.
“I don’t think the noise is them, it could just be natural sounds. We’re hearing noises and more ships are coming into the area, and then we’re hearing more noises, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence,” he tells the BBC.

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 22/06/2023 13:09

All we can do now is pray for them.

I'm so sorry it ended this way. This must be learned from.

Prayers

Oh gosh. I thought some posts had said that experts involved had said that the banging was found to be background noise from the shipwreck itself. I must have misunderstood- the thread is so fast moving and it’s hard to keep up. Thank you for clarifying, although now my heart has sunk again. How awful to think the banging might indeed have been created by the humans on board.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/06/2023 14:51

RunningFromInsanity · 22/06/2023 14:40

Why do people climb Everest when so many die? Why not safely watch a video instead?

Why do people scuba dive when it can be dangerous? Why not do it in a simulator?

I didn’t realise that going to the Titanic wreck was even an option (for a billionaire at least) but if I had that money then I would have jumped at the chance. Sounds absolutely fascinating.

Ok poor choice of words 'sending', they were all there by choice and knew the risks.

However, it's not comparable to scuba diving or mountain climbing. They were sitting in the capsule looking through the porthole at the end. Apart from them knowing they were in the sea, the experience would be no different to being on dry land.

waterlego · 22/06/2023 14:53

…and in the time it took me to write that post, contradictory evidence has been posted. So none the wiser really. I wonder if a clearer picture will emerge in the fullness of time.

Early US Navy analysis of the sounds has stated they believe it to be background noise. It’s not a concrete, no it wasn’t them. But it’s not a, yes it absolutely was them.

We may never know.

DiscoBeat · 22/06/2023 14:54

I don't understand how such an expedition could take place without a search team being right there waiting in case of a problem. So if there were two Titans then the second could be the back up team. You still couldn't have paid me to go on it though.
