Do your teens have single or double beds?

DS needs a new bed. He's nearly 15 and adult sized (6' and broad).

At that age, I really wanted a double bed, just because it seemed grown up.

I don't think it's occurred to him to ask, but as he's adult sized, I imagine he'll be more comfortable in a double.

But is it appropriate? Am I overthinking?!

What do your teens sleep in?

On "which bed" threads I always say get a double if there is room. Cot to bed is much easier if it's a double, then you can get in with them if needed.
Unless really small bedroom I can't think why you would get a single bed.

OutsidInInsideOut · 22/06/2023 21:24

He has a box room that literally fits a single bed, a beside and a chest of drawers. So single bed but if had space would be a double.

And then they get to uni, and sleep in singles, often with company!

Haha so true 😂 bit disappointing if sleeping in a double at home then single in halls of residence.

The whole point is you want them to move out and get their own place 😉

Less washing. More floor space for younger children, many double bedrooms don't have a lot of floor space with a double bed in them. The washing is a big one though, I'm glad I didn't have years of unnecessary washing loads, and it's harder finding space to dry double bedding in the winter.

Surely some must share with a sibling and have single beds. I’ve never known a teen have a double bed, even if there was space.

I have two DC in one bedroom, two in another. Only space for single beds but they will survive. It won't do them any harm🤷

Can't believe three pages into this thread you are the only poster to mention siblings sharing a bedroom. It's like something from Dickensian times😂

My DC 13 has a double bed and has had it about 3 years

Four bedroom house with four kids is hardly Dickensian!

Double since 15. He's tall. But uni beds are mostly singles so he'll have to get used to it!

Wellgoodforyou · 22/06/2023 22:45

All three of mine had double beds from 12/13 . My three year old granddaughter has a double when she stays here .

Yellowdays · 22/06/2023 22:46

We have doubles, but it also enables guests to stay.

A single then a double is two beds though. DS has only had two singles then a double due to moving countries.

I mean I’ve only bought one cot and two beds in total. Mattresses will be replaced but the beds are built to last. One is wrought iron, the other is solid oak.

Oh, you mean for two children?

I have DSs single bed and mattress in the box room and it will go to another child in my family.

Beezknees · 23/06/2023 06:18

DS has had a double since he was about 12, don't see why it would be inappropriate, he doesn't have girls sleeping in it. It just gives him more room. He's an only child so no issue with sharing a room.

Mine share. They are in bunk beds.

I had plenty space in my room growing up and only had a single bed! I survived.

QuintanaRoo · 23/06/2023 06:39

Dd has a small double but her bf often stays over.

Exactly. It's not a big deal sleeping in a single.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 23/06/2023 06:57

DD has never had a single bed. If you've got the room why would you waste your money on a single bed? A double bed is far more practical long term.

I get your point and this may be the case in an isolated family unit, but my mother's and uncle's single beds went to us as children, then DS. DS's single that I had to buy new after relocation will go to his cousin. Outside of the family is the local furniture bank. There is no waste.

A single bed until 16 also saved many washing loads, not sure what all that would add up to.

Hippydippydipchip · 23/06/2023 07:09

One has a double
the other has a small double.

Fizbosshoes · 23/06/2023 07:14

My teens both have single beds, they are both small although their rooms could easily accommodate a double

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 23/06/2023 07:18

My Dc have doubles. One isn’t a teen yet but very tall like DH.

Neither of my DC was dry at night until they were about 6 or 7. One summer holiday I think i washed all the bedding daily, including the duvet, in this instance a single was by far the most practical. Both DC still have the beds they had when they first went into a bed from a cot. The beds are in good condition (one has had a new mattress) and neither DC has requested a double even though many of their friends have them. I'm not getting why they're impractical

If they have a sickness bug as well, young children are not reliable with a bucket. But it is less washing anyway every week, fortnight, or month (depending on how often you wash bedding) for years.
