OP of the last thread has said she has to pop out so making this one as we’re almost full on the 2nd thread.

I cannot stop thinking about these poor men.

Human being ‘fuck with graveyards’ all the time. We reuse them and build on them constantly.

Yes, indeed we do.

Don’t fuck with the depths of the ocean would be a more applicable message!

Doopersuper · 22/06/2023 07:52

There is a private British team & sub which is apparently more than capable of going to those depths and further who have been ready to go since Monday but US Coastguard said they didn’t need help. Surely this is / was a moment you take ALL the help you can get?!…. Just weird🤷🏼‍♀️

3luckystars · 22/06/2023 07:54

I’m still hoping for a miracle.

They already have the equipment they need in place. Adding more people doesn’t necessarily help either, in fact it can hinder. ‘Too many cooks’, essentially.

Rumour (as posted last night) was effort/resources had to concentrated at least initially into getting vessels /equipment close to the incident site such as the French ship into the area PDQ.

I guess the full story on that might come out eventually, I thnk ATM there's a danger of some playing the nasty US/controversy card.

Or if you’re going to, don’t cut corners on safety.

Dinobore · 22/06/2023 08:00

It does seem the British 'Romeo and Juliet' unmanned crafts would be ideal as they can operate at the required depth and have tethering capabilites, it does seem bizarre to outright say no, but it seems that the real issue was finding a plane to transport them in time (there apparently isn't an appropriate and safe landing strip within a reasonable distance of the search) so I suspect it was more nuanced than just refusing help. Possibly also a bit of well of course we also have thar tech (even if they dont)- pride goes a long way in tech capabilities.

I'm not sure on the others but it seems HH has been on deep dives before in this kind of vessel and I'm sure he knew the risks and on balance decided for him it was worth it. Not saying of course it makes the situation any better or any less sad, but I'm sure when you're a seasoned 'explorer' you recognise and accept the risks more than someone who perhaps just sees it as a cool opportunity.

Dinobore · 22/06/2023 08:01

It is chilling that his last post was saying the winter has been an exceptionally bad one and they were attempting the dive in a window of respite from the harsh weather.

Bouledeneige · 22/06/2023 00:34

Probably been posted already but a very poignant interview with Nargeolet the French diver on board the Titan speculating about what could go wrong and how they might die. I think he would have been a very calming influence.

I found this quite chilling 😞 poor guy

The whole thing was just fed too risky. So so sad.

I am constantly looking on Twitter and the news channels hoping for a miracle.

Like fly paper?

Honestly I don't know. I did manage to find pictures of something that could be what was being described, but honestly, in such a small submersible, would there be much space for it?

Page 11 there's a pic of the 'curtain' which is basically long strips hanging down. It's not paper, though, it's a membrane of some kind.

FWIW St John's has a very decent/capable airport but I agree the decisions behind this were probably much more nuanced than simply the US or Canada saying just No for the sake of it.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 22/06/2023 08:11

4 hours approx left :(

BalanceMeHumours · 22/06/2023 08:11

Interesting interview on Dan Snow's podcast this week with a Titanic expert, saying the wreck is now littered with ballast that has been cut lose from the 100 (ish) of these kinds of dives taking place since the first in the 90s. In some cases, dropped right through parts of the ship.

Wherever we go, there is litter, it seems.

Soloparenthelp · 22/06/2023 08:12

Quote from BBC:

A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) from UK company Magellan is currently being loaded onto a C17 plane at Jersey Airport.
Their sub – called Juliet – recently scanned the Titanic wreck, producing a 3D view of the entire ship.
Once it leaves, it will take about 48 hours to get to the site – which is beyond the timeline given for air for the passengers.
It will be able to dive the full depth of the site, and the team has a detailed knowledge of the deep sea area having been there recently.
The sub has been ready to leave since earlier in the week but has been held up by permissions.

chilledtuesdays · 22/06/2023 08:13

I assume they'll keep searching after the window for survival has passed? To give some answers to the relatives? Although I'm not sure I'd want to know what happened. 😔

whumpthereitis · 22/06/2023 08:13

This already is an international effort, with French, Canadian and US technology and teams being deployed. As much as it’s said that the US needs to park its ego, so do the countries that are perceiving a snub. Those on site have a far better understanding as to what is actually happening, and what is needed.

Well said..

Soloparenthelp · 22/06/2023 08:16

Yet they’ve just had permission to send the equipment so one would assume it is required after all…

Somebody will have to call a halt at some point once any hope of anyone surviving has gone....there's no real driver from a general public safety POV in continuing to search for months

That will be a tough call and I wouldn't want to be that individual.

Every country would be the same to extent no doubt about it, its not a personal attack on the US it's just the way it is (even between allies). I don't think countries as an entity are perceiving a snub are they? Often these things are more complex and riddled with politics amongst other things, nothing wrong with acknowledging that.

Roll your eyes all you want. All that money could have gone to good use such as finding cures for cancer and other diseases.

One of the men has seen the wreck 37 times....what was he expecting to see this time? Of course best case scenario they are rescued and safe. Worst case it was an instant death.

I suspect he was going as the "content expert", and the CEO was the pilot. So the paying visitors were Hamish Harding and the Dawoods.

So more of a job than just a trip. But if you're interested in it, enough that the risks are worth it to you then I can see why you'd agree to go on multiple trips. The ship is changing as it decays — going every year means you can actually see that.

ROVs would be much safer though.

Londre · 22/06/2023 08:18

Sadly I think there is a very little chance of finding them. I was waking up through the night hoping for an update but sadly that wasn’t the case.

Hoping I’m wrong and a miracle happens. I can’t imagine what the families are going through.

OrbandSpectacle · 22/06/2023 08:18

Regarding litter, I read there is plastic litter even at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
