I cannot stop thinking about these poor men.

And that’s assuming there actually was 90 hours of oxygen on board. Given nothing else appeared to have been done properly, it’s entirely possible, likely even, that the oxygen was nothing like what we’ve been told.

It’s already suggested that there are only approx 40 hours of oxygen and that to reach any more the scuba tanks underneath the device would need to be activated. So if they were incapacitated it’s possible the oxygen ran out days ago.

On the other hand, if some of the people in the sub are dead, there could be enough oxygen for the surviving people to last several more days.

ARareKindaBear · 22/06/2023 06:46

I had a weird dream about this last night. I dreamt I found it (somehow?!) but was warned not to look inside as it will contain dead bodies. I looked inside and there were four people lying there seemingly dead but after a while they all started coughing and waking up once the door was open.

the whole thing is absolutely terrifying

Mumto1boyo · 22/06/2023 06:47

I'm sorry but this is what happens when you interfere with a resting place. A loss of life for fit healthy people and a child all because of too much money, not enough sense.

No, if some of them have already died then there are toxic gases which will pollute the atmosphere even further.

remember that there are no scrubbers on board to remove the CO2 even though there should have been.

ThisIsACoolUserName · 22/06/2023 06:51

This whole unfortunate incident is making me feel like I did when I watched the film about the rescue of the Thai football team. I'm waking up in the night with a tight chest.
I have to do breathing exercises to feel comfortable on the Tube, knowing fresh air is a whole 15 mins away.
I can't even begin to imagine the horror.

WunWun · 22/06/2023 06:53

I actually had a sea nightmare last night too.

Willmafrockfit · 22/06/2023 06:53

oh i dreamt my dog jumped off a cliff and landed safely in the sea, swam to the shore and i tried to clamber down

Out of interest did you decide actually it was ok to discuss after your first post

‘All these threads and discussion elsewhere just seems a bit ghoulish at this point. It’s understandable that people are interested, but this seems like the internet equivalent of people waiting outside mines and such for the bodies to be brought out.’

The latest I saw was 12.08pm UK time assuming they had the full 96 hours.

As per other posts though the hypothermia is the bigger problem.

I think they have about 5 hours of oxygen left.
It’s not going to happen in time is it?
If they pinpoint them now it will be 2.5 hours down, free them from whatever is stopping them surfacing, attach a line and 2.5 hrs back up.
Those poor people. They must be terrified.

Willmafrockfit · 22/06/2023 06:56

i am sure they will have come to terms with it,

ARareKindaBear · 22/06/2023 06:56

If they have no food and water will they even be conscious now? Not to mention the fact that the air will now be thick as hell and difficult to breath

The posters chastising current events posts, or claiming they have specific info but won't share because 'no one needs to know,' are so tiring.

It's not morally superior to have no interest or reaction to current events and human experiences.

My dh won’t let me mention it at all.
He finds the whole thing harrowing.
I’m fascinated by it all but I think that’s because it’s almost like an adventure story rather than real life.

Freefall212 · 22/06/2023 07:02

Having been hypoxic twice in my life (once to the point of stopping breathing), the end stages are quite enjoyable (at least in my case and in many others I have read about). The initial stages are quite uncomfortable and panicky as you work to get oxygen in or your body wants you to take a breath but can't but once your oxygen level starts to drop, there is a euphoric, calm, laughing gas type feeling that comes over you. Had I died either time it would have been a very peaceful drifting off in a state of calm. In one of my cases, I was deep underwater as well (caught and sucked down in a whirlpool) and it was cold and dark and even in that environment as I ran out of oxygen, I thought it was funny and felt very at peace.

Lwrenagain · 22/06/2023 07:02

It's terribly sad to imagine what they're experiencing, especially the young man.
I feel sick for their families.

I've seen this tragedy be compared to people losing their lives hiding in lorries etc, the way to go is frankly terrifying.
Its insane to think, 5 people with more money than most people on the planet would trade it all to swap places with you right now. Heartbreaking stuff.

I can't see a happy outcome in any of this sadly, but wish for one regardless.

CinderRosie · 22/06/2023 07:06

I was awake in the night which is unusual for me and I was refreshing the news hoping for a positive update but nothing. Given it’s now the morning and only a few hours left I’ve lost 99.9% of hope I had that there could be a miraculous ending to this horrid story.
I was also imagining what a distressing and sad discovery it’d be if they do find the sub bobbing or indeed at greater depths when time has run out but everything else is still intact. Sad

And how does that reduce the amount of oxygen? Or is this another of your "nuclear warhead" claims?

EmmaBridgewaterMugs · 22/06/2023 07:09

The poor mum.

CrunchyCarrot · 22/06/2023 07:10

This is not what I have heard? An expert was interviewed quite early on during this incident (sorry can't recall who, it was on the BBC news) and said that they had 2 scrubber systems to remove carbon dioxide.

EmmaBridgewaterMugs · 22/06/2023 07:11

I thought they had scrubbers but the batteries only lasted forty hours.

Igneococcus · 22/06/2023 07:13

remember that there are no scrubbers on board to remove the CO2 even though there should have been.

Is that true? I hadn't seen that yet if it is. Alvin has CO2 scrubbers, but in the ~8 hours I've been in Alvin we never turned them on because they draw battery power and the concentration never reached a level that would have needed CO2 removal, although I started getting a headache which stopped the moment I was out of the sub. I can't imagine having 5 people in this space and no way of removing CO2.

Mumto1boyo · 22/06/2023 07:13

WunWun · 22/06/2023 06:54

🙄

Roll your eyes all you want. All that money could have gone to good use such as finding cures for cancer and other diseases.

One of the men has seen the wreck 37 times....what was he expecting to see this time? Of course best case scenario they are rescued and safe. Worst case it was an instant death.

Yes, then there are (apparently) strips of special paper that can be hung up to do the same job.
