How old is 'too old' for a child to be naked at a splash park?

Sitting here with the 4yo niece charge at a splash park... 6/7 year old girl running round starkers! I'm a bit shocked tbh.

Now I have been "caught short" before, but she's just been sent in the water in her knickers, because she can always just go commando on the way home.

I think anything around 3+ is too old tbh.

No child naked in public ever at any age unless you want their photo featured on some paedophile site! FFS are folk really that unaware? SMH

Chellybelle · 19/06/2023 17:41

It's not appropriate at any age. Anyone that wants their child naked in public has ulterior motives or is wildly naive. I've been the naked child "paraded" at a theme park at about 6 years old. At the time I felt embarrassed. Now I'm thinking of getting police onto the family member for what they did as it was one instance in a long list of things they did involving kids ( usually me or my sibling) and public nudity. Children are to be protected.

I used to let my kids (toddling age) run naked at the beach etc, just like I did.
Now though, so many weirdos with instant access to take photographs etc, I won't allow it now.
So sad too, nothing more fun for kids to have a run around in the nud!
I think we just all need remember how dangerous the world is, its nothing to do with the nudity ifyswim.

Splash parks/beaches/anywhere public kids now need clothes.

My eldest son loved being naked (sensory) so I'm grateful that it wasn't as bad in those days for phones etc to have cameras 😅

Surely it’s just as much fun to run around in swimwear!?
my mil says things like that! such as “so innocent” and they’ love the fresh air” !! But not for long if a paedo is watching or filming or taking sly photos (I’ve actually witnessed this on a beach once) disgusting!!

-imo it’s never safe for children of any age to be naked in public
I’d not take that chance ever!
My children can enjoy themselves- In nappies/ or swimwear

Btw I wasn’t having a go at you! I see you realise how dangerous it can be these days with access to media so readily available and at instant access!

Ylvamoon · 19/06/2023 17:50

I think nowadays not at all, due to phones with cameras. I just wouldn't risk it.

Back in the olden days, when I was a child I think we run around naked until 4/5 at outdoor swimming pools. That is in the kids area with all the other little kids. And even after that, I remember just wearing my bikini pants until age 8/9.
But it's different times & different country!

chaosmaker · 19/06/2023 18:13

A comedian did a thing on iplayer, I think. His act is based on his own sexual abuse as a child. He was looking in paedophiles and how to combat it. He spoke to a woman that works with trying to stop child abuse by therapy and she said she'd had children phoning her to say they were paedophiles. One was a 12 year old girl. It's not just men or even adults.
I think it's sad that children can't be naked though and just not have to be worried all the time.

BBYBjorn · 19/06/2023 18:19

ComtesseDeSpair · 19/06/2023 16:05

If there are people around getting off on looking at naked small children then whether they’re 3 or 6 is irrelevant. Either all children should be clothed in public if you’re worried about people looking at naked children, or there’s no need for any clothing in children up until puberty and / or the child makes that decision themselves.

No children should be naked. As adults, we're supposed to give them dignity if nothing else.

Your child's private parts do not need to be exposed for them to have fun and feel free, so just put pants on

TimeToMoveIt · 19/06/2023 18:20

I don't know why anyone would want to risk naked pictures of their child being posted all over the Internet for dirty bastards to wank over , makes no sense to me

Mummyboy1 · 19/06/2023 18:21

I wouldn't let my 18 month old be naked in a park. It's a public space.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 19/06/2023 18:22

ah at no age should children be naked in public!

SaveMeFromForearms · 19/06/2023 18:22

Absolem76 · 19/06/2023 16:00

Because she's the size of a 6/7 year old...
Some 3 year olds are as tall as some 6 year olds so I don't think you can assume.
However I don't think children of any age should be naked in a park.

Only on Mumsnet can an OP not know the difference between a 3 year old and a 7 year old.

Countingdowntodecember · 19/06/2023 18:28

I can’t decide whether I think it’s ok up until puberty or not ok at any age. Either way, the same ’rules’ would apply to a 3 and 6 year old.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/06/2023 18:29

I’m British and I don’t see anything wrong with it, certainly in a 6-7 year old. Gdd1 at 5 was perfectly happy to run around starkers at such places. Now 8, I think she’d want knickers, if not a swimsuit.

I wouldn’t think twice about letting the 3 year old go naked, and neither would dd. Some of the replies here do strike me as rather prudish.

Wasley · 19/06/2023 18:33

Discwriter · 19/06/2023 16:01

I think all kids all ages need at least knickers.

I agree as it is uncomfortable for others nearby especially men .Cover them up in public . You never know who is secretly filming.

Lolapusht · 19/06/2023 18:49

Beamur · 19/06/2023 16:17

When DD was younger and I took her to one of these in my local city, staff there warned me to be careful and not let the kids go anywhere unsupervised as they had persistent problems with men filming children and putting their phones under the partitions in the toilets and changing areas. So grim it out me off going again. So unless you want your kid to be wank fodder for a pedo I would keep them covered up. Plus it protects them from sunburn.
Public nudity isn't ok in this country. Fair play to others that manage it without problems.

“Wanker fodder for paedos” is exactly right.

Revolting, but correct.

I also don’t want to see anyone naked in public and I don’t give a tiny rat’s ass what people on the continent do or how free and wonderful it is. NO-ONE should be naked or semi-naked in public including bloody builders working in my garden 😡

But yeah, it’s so easy for paedophiles to take pictures these days I’ll be damned if I’ll make their lives easier.

loislovesstewie · 19/06/2023 18:52

It's not prudery. It's recognizing and understanding that sadly there are men, and I've personally never met a female, who become sexually excited sound children and wish to engage in sexual activity with them. Your child could either be groomed and assaulted or their photos passed around on the internet for men to use for masturbation. When I worked I would attend MAPPA meetings, I would feel sick hearing what these men had done, the excuses they gave. Men who think an 8 year old seduced them, a big man believing that he is being seduced by a child!, Any excuse to do what they want. I could tell you so many stories about what they did.
So, no, it's not prudery, it's safeguarding.

moanyhole · 19/06/2023 18:53

As someone who has had to work with supporting paedophiles in care I strongly believe no child should be naked in public, high chance an adult in the vicinity is enjoying every minute of it. Grim but true

bryceQ · 19/06/2023 18:53

I'm not one for my kid being naked ever. He wears a little uv body suit thing. I don't know why a kid would need to be naked and not in swimwear at all...

Vitaminbees · 19/06/2023 18:54

Nope. No nakedness in public. Pants only is fine up until junior school age I’d think.
Possibly naked in garden at home/close relatives/friends depending on how private it is until around 4/5 but no need really.

It’s not about how comfortable the child is, it’s about if you’re happy with strangers taking pictures of them and using said pictures as “currency” to get access to paedophile sites.

Now, of course it’s bad to think everyone is dangerous and how children should have freedom etc, etc, etc BUT everyone has a phone these days and can take pictures from a distance without you knowing. It doesn’t have to be something staged or in close proximity, just an innocent looking picture of a naked child running along the beach.

Sometimes it’s ok to see evil everywhere.

Oh for goodness sake, well maybe she’s a small 10 year old then!!

So picky!

No age is the answer, they need a nappy, costume or knickers if it wasn’t planned.
