Boris stands down as MP with immediate effect part 3

1000 replies

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2023 16:56

Tomorrow is the Commons vote on the Privileges Committee's findings that Boris Johnson deliberately misled Parliament over Downing Street parties during lockdown

The vote is a free vote rather than being whipped either way. Tories have been told that the vote will be a one-line whip, meaning they will not be obliged to participate.

Boris Johnson is believed to have advised his backers to not vote against it.

Michael Gove confirmed on live tv that he will abstain

Tobias Elwood has u-turned on abstaining after hearing stories from voters

Rishi Sunak, who knows

That was a very specific unintentionally inaccurate excuse he gave.

I'm sure he'll claim it was reasonable though Wink

Jason118 · 25/06/2023 12:57

Or 'limited and specific'.

Boris was briefing the Russians on the UKs progress in the Salisbury poisonings.

In particular the advise to say the killers were on a sightseeing trip to Salisbury Cathedral.

Prove me wrong.

Dispatches in on Channel 4 at 10pm tonight.

It wouldn't even surprise me Serendipity

Couldn't that be classed as sone kind of treason?

Well treason used to include "comforting the Kings enemies abroad".

But you need to remember the bonkers barmy Boris backers on this thread wouldn't see it that way. Not when Keir had a beer.

People who were concerned about the elevation of Lebedev weren't worried about secret documents. If the KGB wanted those, they'd get them the usual way. It's more about the fact that he'd be moving freely throughout the movers and shakers without any chance of meaningful oversight. As Ms Owens will now be able to do.

Presumably Mad Nad got bumped from a peerage when someone realised that she'd draw far too much attention to herself and (more importantly) those people she connected with.

Peregrina · 27/06/2023 15:48

What's happened with Mad Nad;'s resignation with immediate effect? Should we be buying her a dictionary so she can look up the word immediate?

Last I heard she was refusing to resign until she had been told "the real reason" she wasn't getting a peerage. Which considering Ms Owens is must have been a bit humiliating. Or would if you had any shame.

I think it was the same article where DearNadine tried to explain away why she had been blabbing to all her mates about getting a peerage. I mean discretion may be important for whatever dignity might remain in the honours system, but how else will folk know to keep the date and what to wear ?

Zonder · 27/06/2023 15:55

I'll tell her why she didn't get a peerage. Because she is of no use to Johnson and is a liability. She serves no useful purpose so why would she?

Also her not getting one has proved quite the thief of publicity from who is getting one.

Given Boris sees himself as Hercules, and if you have the classical education I have, what's the general opinion on Boris and Nads ? Those of a certain age a and constitution (you really need an iron stomach) may recall Major and Currie was brushed aside when it was happening only for it to turn out to be true (who would have thunked it ?) much much later.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/06/2023 23:19

Ah FFS, did you really have to @SerendipityJane?🤢

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 27/06/2023 23:34

If it's not Nads it will have been someone else. There's always someone else with him isn't there. Marina Wheeler, Petronella Wyatt, Jennifer Acuri, Anna Fazackerley, Helen MacIntyre, Carrie Johnson.

Isn't the usual phrase a "terminological inexactitude" . Especially given it's provenance.

Or "economy with the actualité"

The House of Commons Privileges Committee has reported on the conduct of MPs who impugned 'the integrity of that Committee and its members' and attempted 'to lobby or intimidate those members or to encourage others to do so'

Implies that the members are in contempt and asks Parliament to take appropriate actions

https://twitter.com/PaulBrandITV/status/1674332238324834304?s=20

BREAKING: Privileges Committee concludes that Conservative MPs and peers deliberately tried to undermine its inquiry into Boris Johnson and intimidate its members.

They single out Nadine Dorries, Michael Fabricant, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Priti Patel, Mark Jenkinson and more.

(The Johnson defenders on here are finding themselves in fine company)

Quite a crossover between Johnson awarded honours and those that tried to intimidate the Parliamentary committee.
Funny that.

And I just saw that Rwanda is odd! Government plans were unlawful after all. Who knew? 🤔

DuncinToffee · 29/06/2023 10:27

Lord Chief Justice, Lord Burnett: “The High Court’s decision that Rwanda is a safe third country is reversed. Unless and until the deficiencies in its asylum processes are corrected, removal of asylum seekers to Rwanda will be unlawful.”

The government has signalled it is quite willing to break the law previously. So this may mean nothing.

Also, because parliament is supreme (who knew ?) there is still the option of just passing a law saying "this is now lawful" with the addendum "so go fuck yourselves" just left unsaid.
