Boris stands down as MP with immediate effect part 3

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2023 16:56

Tomorrow is the Commons vote on the Privileges Committee's findings that Boris Johnson deliberately misled Parliament over Downing Street parties during lockdown

The vote is a free vote rather than being whipped either way. Tories have been told that the vote will be a one-line whip, meaning they will not be obliged to participate.

Boris Johnson is believed to have advised his backers to not vote against it.

Michael Gove confirmed on live tv that he will abstain

Tobias Elwood has u-turned on abstaining after hearing stories from voters

Rishi Sunak, who knows

Boris Johnson's enemies seal his fate as allies fume at 'ridiculous' stitch-up | Politics | News | Express.co.uk

The report had been expected to be nodded through after Mr Johnson urged allies not to oppose it, arguing that the sanctions have no practical effect and it is time to move on.

But Labour MPs used a parliamentary tactic to force a vote on the report that recommended Mr Johnson faced a theoretical 90-day suspension and is blocked from holding a parliamentary pass.

The party wanted to force Tory MPs to put on the record whether they backed the committee’s findings into Mr Johnson. MPs approved the Privileges Committee report by 354 votes to 7, majority 347.

Conservative MP Lia Nici, who was an aide to Mr Johnson, said the report was “not impartial”.
She added: “I have to speak in the House today because I cannot see where the evidence is where Boris Johnson misled Parliament knowingly, intentionally or recklessly…. The reality is – is that Boris Johnson did not knowingly or intentionally mislead this House.”
She went on: “Number 10 is full of police officers, full of security people. Why did nobody report this to the Prime Minister so that he was aware of it.”
“Sadly this is all becoming part of a kind of political opportunism for those people who don’t like Boris Johnson’s approach,” she added.

So it's the police's fault, the security officers fault - why can't he take responsibility and why didn't he ask someone who would have known when he was going to be asked about it at PMQs?

Tories accused the opposition of "political opportunism" who wanted a "formidable" opponent out of the way.

Least after hours folk in the HOC have stopped parroting 'he is a LI- AHHHH!!!' In a rather repetitive and childish way.

They don’t need to any more, do they?

TomPinch · 20/06/2023 08:36

The most satisfying part of all this is reading the complaining from Johnson's supporters. It's almost as good as watching the death of King Joffrey.

'You're back.'

Am I supposed to be present 24/7 to keep correcting you?

Anyway, love Jenkyn's statement 👏

You want to correct the Government guidance?

Go on, take a look at it and see how the Government was trying to get offices to mitigate contact.

I do expect that if someone is going to go on about not seeing evidence that rules weren't being followed - they should at least take the opportunity to read the rules and guidance at the time.

Unless you don't want to?

Here's an example of a real skunk. This is reported by the Guardian.

Brendan Clarke-Smith, the Bassetlaw MP who had previously said he would vote against it, told Channel 4 News: “I’m not going to be voting one way or the other. I’m against the report and its recommendations.
“It’s not really right. The number of people that are in here, it’s kind of made a bit of a farce of it, I think to be honest.
“If we had a full house here and everybody was here to vote, I think you’d get a more realistic picture, but you’re not going to get that today. So really, I think I wouldn’t want to legitimise that vote today.”

What a whiner.

He's too thick to explain why he disagrees with the contents of the report.

He doesn't like the result so he's taking his ball home by not voting.

He implicitly casts doubt on the legitimacy of Parliament by his reasons for not voting. It's Parliament's role to vote on things so why the hell is he an MP?

Clarke-Smith tweeted that he was watching the cricket instead. Strange, I thought we paid him to work.

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/06/2023 08:17

He’s spot on. They spent years trying to clean up the Tory Party image from the 90s and this lot have undone it and then some. They can bleat on about Starmer and call him names all they like but he doesn’t really have to do much to win the next election. They threw it away with their own greed and incompetence.

This is Jenkyn’s statement. We might have to educate her on how PM’s get elected in this country. Namely that it’s the person who can command a majority of MPs in the house and Johnson can’t. She seems to have forgotten that bit.

Given that Starmer appeared to command a majority in the House of Commons yesterday, can they just make him Prime Minister now please.

Skipping Parliament to watch cricket. That's the problem with people like him: pound-shop Winston Churchills.

If I bury my head in the sand and shot, "la, la, la" loud enough I wont see any evidence.

Doesn't change the fact that Johnson is a liar though.

The I saw no parties, there were no parties, the rules were obeyed at all times fell down about the time he started defending leaving dos and needing to relax as they were working hard.

Poor Andrea Jenkyns is moaning about how unfair it is that it was mathematically impossible for them to defeat the vote so they all got together and decided to boycott it and abstain. Fingers crossed they are stupid enough to employ this tactic in the next general election.

So if she gets in at the next election and ends up in a minority opposition, is she just going to boycott every Parliamentary vote?

I hope her constituents are going to take note of the fact that she apparently has no intention of doing her job.

Why did nobody report this to the Prime Minister so that he was aware of it.”

Perhaps they thought they didn’t need to because they knew he already knew about them and had no issue. This explanation seems to have bypassed Nici.

There are 16 gatherings his own lawyers handed to the police from his notebooks because they thought they broke the laws in place at the time. Not to mention the ABBA party in his flat which nobody seems to want to investigate too closely.

cakeorwine · 20/06/2023 08:54

Lis Nici at 5.35 pm

"No, I will not give way at the moment. Those people advised the then Prime Minister again and again that no rules were broken and that guidance was followed at all times. Everybody in this place knows that no Minister stands at the Dispatch Box and knowingly misleads. They have to take counsel from people who advise them, many of whom are giving legal advice that they know to be the truth, but the public do not necessarily know that that is the case. If you are a Prime Minister and you are advised in that way again and again, no matter how you question that advice, you have to stand at the Dispatch Box and give those statements, because that is what you have been legally advised to do. People may not like that, but that is the truth, and that is why I am standing here and saying this."

I don't think he took LEGAL advice, did he?
Just advice from people who had been at the gatherings

Dominic Grieve on CNN

“They began to grapple with the problem that really they had a monster on their hands because in constitutional terms that is what this country had.”

But that happened.

Because they are idiots or arrogant

Janiie has run out of road, just like Johnson has. Boris Johnson is a liar and yesterday's man. He is finished politically.
