Boris stands down as MP with immediate effect part 3

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2023 16:56

Tomorrow is the Commons vote on the Privileges Committee's findings that Boris Johnson deliberately misled Parliament over Downing Street parties during lockdown

The vote is a free vote rather than being whipped either way. Tories have been told that the vote will be a one-line whip, meaning they will not be obliged to participate.

Boris Johnson is believed to have advised his backers to not vote against it.

Michael Gove confirmed on live tv that he will abstain

Tobias Elwood has u-turned on abstaining after hearing stories from voters

Rishi Sunak, who knows

She's not a fan of, erm, parliamentary votes then? Odd job to be in if so.

She's going to be in for a shock after the GE!

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/06/2023 07:47

Opposition Day motions will be interesting. No point voting on those when you only have 100 MPs. 😂

The current crop of Tory MPs really does contain a remarkable amount of absolute stupidity. They’ve clearly never heard that old adage about being better to remain silent and be thought a fool.

Is this an arguement against following the "will of the people" in the Brexit referendum?

Such a viewpoint might also negate the outcome of many General Elections?

Boris Johnson is a liar. I hope hope he enjoyed his birthday yesterday.

It makes an absolute mockery of democracy when people don't turn up to vote because they don't think they will win.

Obviously it makes no difference to outcome if they are correct.

But it shows they don't believe in democratic process - they just want the wins. Anything else like voting shows the actual will of the people. We don't want that now do we? Because then we can't spout "the will of the people" as a defence.

It's an absolute embarrassing shambles.

That's what happens when parties select for blind loyalty over competence.

They just make themselves look pathetic, don't they? And the argument about legitimacy won't wash. Tons of motions, regulations, amendments etc. etc. are passed on less without a full House being present to vote.

Yes I agree. You either believe that representing your constituents matters or it doesn't.
Some of them are really going to struggle being in Opposition for 5 years.

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/06/2023 08:00

It’s remarkable just how out of step all those Tory MPs are with public feeling on this. They absolutely deserve the complete massacre they’re going to get at the election and I don’t think most of them have a clue why they are about to lose.

It’s the same with all the strikes and the NHS. They are way out of line with public attitudes and can’t see a way to getting back except for banging on about Brexit and small boats which are of little interest to people who can’t put food on the table and are about to lose their home.

I once heard someone say that not even the Tories were expecting Boris to get a landslide so the 2019 intake has some quality control issues. Tories didn’t expect most of them to end up as MPs.

IClaudine · 20/06/2023 08:10

Turnout last night was 61.7%. Turnout at the last GE was 67.3%.

TomPinch · 20/06/2023 08:10

A lot of them do seem to be genuine thickos. But that's not all.

Here's a Guardian quote from the Secret Tory:

“I’d always thought [about politicians]: ‘There are some bad apples but largely they are trying to make the world a better place.’ The more I’ve become immersed in it, the more I’ve thought: ‘These people are proper wrong ’uns.’ The 2019 Conservative MPs are self-interested, they’re corrupt, they’re mean-spirited, largely stupid and, as far as I can tell, filling their helicopters and firing up the shredders before they get booted out at the next election.”

The six most recent opinion polls all show a drop in Tory support. I wonder what has happened in June to cause that?

He’s spot on. They spent years trying to clean up the Tory Party image from the 90s and this lot have undone it and then some. They can bleat on about Starmer and call him names all they like but he doesn’t really have to do much to win the next election. They threw it away with their own greed and incompetence.

This is Jenkyn’s statement. We might have to educate her on how PM’s get elected in this country. Namely that it’s the person who can command a majority of MPs in the house and Johnson can’t. She seems to have forgotten that bit.

Cross referencing the Tories with the smallest majorities with the voting list from last night.

https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/general-election-2019-marginality/

https://votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/1566

Felicity Buchan voted for the motion. Christian Wakeford has already defected. Mark Logan abstained. Robert Largan (High Peak) Stephen Hammond (Wimbledon) and Elliott Colburn (Carshalton) supported. Tom Randall (Gedling) Chris Clarkson (Heywood and Middleton) Andrew Bowie (West Aberdeenshire) abstained. Alex Chalk (Cheltenham) Steve Brine (Winchester) voted for, and Ian Levy abstained.

So of 11 Tory MPs on that list, none voted against, 6 for and 5 abstained. That's a very different picture to the parliamentary party as a whole, where only a third supported the motion. And these are the MPs who are least likely to survive pissing their constituents off. They're the ones you'd most expect to be responsive to angry letters.

'I hope hope he enjoyed his birthday yesterday'

I bet he did! He seems to be made of strong stuff not the sort to be wibbling and wailing into his hankie. He knows exactly what has gone on so will no doubt hold his head high and move on.

Yeah, someone who did the first few lessons in A level politics should be able to raise her level of understanding.

Na. He is weak and desperate to be popular. He will have been crying into his Colin the Caterpillar. Or throwing it against the wall in a narcissistic rage.

cakeorwine · 20/06/2023 08:27

650 MPs

354 voted for it.

I think that's a majority, clearly endorsing it and legitimising it as the will of Parliament, which is Sovereign.

Back at you, Jenkyns - this is the Brexit argument. You lost, get over it, it's what Parliament wanted

You're back.

Did you read the office guidance I posted from that Government link before.

You should see how there was guidance that was not followed.

Unless you don't want to read it - because if you do read it, you might realise that it wasn't being followed and it might make you change your mind.

TomPinch · 20/06/2023 08:29

David Maddox, a political editor at a major UK newspaper appears not to have the first clue about how Parliament works or its role in the UK constitution.

It's baffling and depressing. Whatever else you could say about the right wing, they used to understand that pretty well and knew its value.

Anyway, love Jenkyn's statement 👏

Least after hours folk in the HOC have stopped parroting 'he is a LI- AHHHH!!!' In a rather repetitive and childish way.
