Boris stands down as MP with immediate effect part 3

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2023 16:56

Tomorrow is the Commons vote on the Privileges Committee's findings that Boris Johnson deliberately misled Parliament over Downing Street parties during lockdown

The vote is a free vote rather than being whipped either way. Tories have been told that the vote will be a one-line whip, meaning they will not be obliged to participate.

Boris Johnson is believed to have advised his backers to not vote against it.

Michael Gove confirmed on live tv that he will abstain

Tobias Elwood has u-turned on abstaining after hearing stories from voters

Rishi Sunak, who knows

I know those guidelines because I was heavily involved in keeping our office safe during Covid and taking steps to reduce contact with others.

I would have known that having a celebration such as cake was not sensible, even though we may have had meetings before. Because we were trying to keep contact as short as possible and to have as much social distancing as possible.

You see, we had celebrations involving wine and cake.

Over Teams.

With everyone in their own home. It was the only way we could have a leaving do for my line manager.

DuncinToffee · 19/06/2023 21:39

Even Johnson doesn't deny it was a party or gathering and accepted the fine. He even had lawyers to help him

It seems to have been a labour whip who called No to force the vote

Dastardly!

I think the Nos had an easy count to do.

I am going for 10 Nos.

cakeorwine · 19/06/2023 21:41

7!!

Who are you!!!

DuncinToffee · 19/06/2023 21:42

MPs vote on the privileges committee report:

That’s going to be an interesting list.

cakeorwine · 19/06/2023 21:43

Mogg
Dorries
.....

borntobequiet · 19/06/2023 21:43

Well well.

LorraineInSpain · 19/06/2023 21:44

Wonder how many abstained?

DuncinToffee · 19/06/2023 21:44

One of the 7 MPs backing Boris Johnson appears to have been a Labour whip who only opposed the Privileges Committee verdict in order to force a vote.

Piggywaspushed · 19/06/2023 21:45

It was the Labour Chief Whip who bellowed No.

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/06/2023 21:45

Lia Nici has to be one.

Peregrina · 19/06/2023 21:46

Who were the abstentions? Some would have legitimate reasons for absence, but Sunak, Braverman etc. Why weren't they out there?

IClaudine · 19/06/2023 21:47

So Johnson doesn't get his Parliamentary Pass. Good.

DuncinToffee · 19/06/2023 21:50

Alan Campbell is the Labour whip who called and voted NO, so 6 others

Of course not, don’t be so delicate. It was a genuine suggestion. I fail to see what you get out any of these discussions though.

How utterly humiliating for him.

The 7 presumably are Rees Mogg, Nick Fletcher, that tit from Bassetlaw and then 4 others. Was Nadine there?

LizzieSiddal · 19/06/2023 21:52

Sorry to butt in and so pleased to listen to the speeches today. It’s restored my faith in politics to hear so many principled people. Rees Mogg and her from Grimsby provided the comedy parts, both deluded and stupid.

Would he have to vote No if he called it just to force the vote? Not entirely sure how these things work!

Peregrina · 19/06/2023 21:55

I assume the votes and abstentions get published somewhere.

I wonder how many times Hansard will record the word Liar?

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/06/2023 21:58

Assume it ends up on CommonsVotes app at some point. It isn’t there yet though.

IClaudine · 19/06/2023 22:00

It has been a long road, but at least some sort of justice has been done.

It was fun to follow the debate here. I hope everyone is OK as some of the speeches may have stirred up difficult memories. Thinking of you especially @Peregrina

I wouldn't think so? If nothing else an MP might change their mind in-between the ayes and noes part and the subsequent vote.
