What is Flop?

Fruttidelbosco · 17/06/2023 09:48

Flop off Bing.

How is he funded?
What led him to this line of work?
Why is he so very, very relaxed?

And what was in Mark Rylance’s mind when he did the voiceover? Has he ever spoken about it?

Some kind of knitted peanut. I've wondered this myself what the hell he's meant to be.

Fruttidelbosco · 17/06/2023 11:12

Yes. I see do see the peanut, now @MaryJean87 .

Is that intentional, I wonder? … because Ama is an elephant (like Sula), but Pagit appears to be a bit of a foam noodle.

He's a beanbag. He works for social services as a 24/7 career I believe

Infusionist · 17/06/2023 12:32

Is there a tragic prequel where Bing’s parents ended up in rabbit pie, leading to his placement with Flop?

orangeflags · 17/06/2023 15:07

I think Bing has bounced around the system. Flop is his current carer, but there were others that couldn't cope with his whining. Flop has an enhanced fee

SideProfile · 17/06/2023 15:34

I’m so lame that I actually looked this up a few weeks ago - he’s meant to represent a toddlers self-centred view of the world or something, which explains why all the adults are small and featureless.

hattyhathat · 17/06/2023 15:35

I'd quite like a flop

hattyhathat · 17/06/2023 15:37

What isn't flop?

LaMaG · 17/06/2023 15:47

I have often wondered this. I always feel he is more like a grandad.

Haven't seen Bing in years but I remember one of the parents in the opening sequence is rude, drops off the kid and doesn't even say hello or goodbye.

Fruttidelbosco · 17/06/2023 15:48

There must be some back story to why Flop is so wet, though.

I don’t know much about ketamine, but it is the word that always comes to my mind when I hear his voice, failing to get annoyed about anything (like Bing breaking his phone, Bing breaking his window, or when Pando takes the mick out of his name).

FriendsDrinkBook · 17/06/2023 15:49

I don't know what Flop is , but what I do know is that Pando deserves his own series.

LaMaG · 17/06/2023 15:49

Flop - it's a Bing thing

Fruttidelbosco · 17/06/2023 15:54

I think the series got some feedback that parents found Flop to be a good role model, and then the writers went berserk on the patronising instructions.

Mark Rylance should have objected to the script. The one where he makes Pando and Bing make fun of a chair is embarrassing; Pando and Bing chuckle to be polite, but really they are embarrassed.

Idea for spin-off show: ‘WTF (What the Flop?)

LividHot · 17/06/2023 15:57

So. I think I read this on here once but I've spent far too long thinking about it.

The theory:

Flop is in some kind of purgatory. He did bad things in his previous life and is being tested to see if he can really change.

All of Bing's whiney "I didn't know I did stealing!" "I didn't mean to kill the butterfly!" shit is designed specifically to test Flop's zen.

Every time Flop loses it and tells Bing to just shut up and shove his carroty bagel where the sun don't shine, he gets sent right back to the beginning ("Fireworks", iykyk) again.

So now, he shares his fruit kebab with nary a twitch because he's earning his place back in Flop Heaven.

Fruttidelbosco · 17/06/2023 16:01

Plausible @LividHot .

That does work. However you look at it, the consequences of losing his rag are just too great. As if he is on probation.

But I am convinced that he does shag Pagit when Pando forces them to have a sleepover. And that Pagit is a piece of work.

@SideProfile the last part of this sentence made me laugh out loud

Oh he's DEFFO boning Pagit in that episode.

Half a pair of sandals?

He's a walking exclamation mark.

I don't understand Bing, in their world do you turn into a knitted thing when you are an adult?

I couldn't agree more. She is practically throwing herself at him twirling round the garden showing off her knack, it's embarrassing

… and the knitted adults will just unravel.

I do like Molly the doctor, though. Tamsin Grieg does her very well. And is Jilly the dog walker, Mrs Doyle?

Thanks for checking. I assume he will at some point do a one-man Flop show to fund his retirement. Touring students unions in twenty years’ time.

and I wonder if Flop shares his politics? And has a pork pie hat?
