Tell me the truth - cake

So, I’ve literally spent all day baking this cake for my son’s birthday. He wanted a Miles Morales Spider-Man themed cake, featuring the Spot.

I’ve been battling indoor temperatures of 27.5 degrees and finding it stressful. I’m going to refrigerate it and tidy up some of the icing tomorrow morning…but, response from DH was ‘it’s fine!’. Am I wrong to feel upset. It’s not perfect, but my back is killing, it cost a fortune and I’m shattered. He’s backtracking now, but it’s too late. P’d off now and looking for something a bit more constructive or even some finishing advice.

thanks

It looks great! I'm always more impressed with a homemade cake - it has love in it and the effort required rather than buying something is great!
I always make my children's cakes. They may not have a professional finish but the kids love them.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 17/06/2023 08:55

It is fab and your son will love it! Worth the effort, definitely 😀

Happy Birthday to your son.

GettingStuffed · 17/06/2023 08:57

Its way way better than anything I'd produce. My grandson would love it

I love it well done. Dont worry it's just a man thing when I do our kids ones hubby exactly the same it doesn't bother me anymore I know when I see them all eating it that's reward enough that it's nice lol

MMorales · 17/06/2023 09:00

Honest opinion?

I wouldn't have recognised the figure on the too if you hadnt told me.

Not sure if its possible now.

But its really easy to buy small figures online, and just stick on top of the cake or around the base. So some small side man figures. Not sure if it's too late now, or if Argos have any.

Lovelynames123 · 17/06/2023 09:03

You've done amazingly, I bake professionally from a commercial kitchen - yesterday was far too hot to decorate there, I had to bring them home where it's much cooler! Well done!

GregoryHouse · 17/06/2023 09:08

I think it looks like an amazing cake.
So glad your son loved it and at 18 he will likely know it took a lot of hard work so will appreciate it even more.
You did a fantastic job CakeStar

I totally agree. I originally wanted to get the Bullyland Mile Morales figure, but DS collects pop funko vinyl figures and has the full Spiderverse collection except the Spot, which is why we decided to go with this as a topper. He gets to keep the figure he’s missing, so it sort of doubles as a gift too. 😃
Absolutely get your point though!!

It is lovely and your ds will love all the care and attention you've put in to it. We are our own worst enemies at times don't be so critical of yourself! At 18 your ds will be thrilled that you've made it for him.

I made my dd a dinosaur cake once, I was so asked with myself as I thought it was absolutely shit. Many years later dd still brings it up as the most amazing birthday cake ever.

SimonsCow · 17/06/2023 09:09

Aw, it’s amazing OP. I always make my kids cakes myself. It’s a lot of extra stress on top of everything else that comes with a birthday but I think back fondly on all the lovely cakes my mum used to make for me.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 17/06/2023 09:09

I really want some cake now! Thanks very much OP for breaking my diet Grin

Flocider · 17/06/2023 09:11

I think it's cute, especially given how hot it's been! Take lots of photos of the cake and your DS. My mum used to bake my birthday cakes, being brutally honest they weren't the best (yours is way better) but especially now I'm older I love looking back at the photos as I can see and understand how much work she put into them. The fact she made them herself because she wanted it to be something I really wanted and often a cake didn't exist in the shops (couldn't afford a bespoke one) just makes my heart melt.

mondaytosunday · 17/06/2023 09:18

My mum used to make our cakes, once a ship and another time a house in snow. Sadly no photos but I remember them! This was back in the 1960s and 70s.
Your cake looks amazing.

Piscesmumma1978 · 17/06/2023 09:21

That's actually really cool how you've done the icing.

He's going to absolutely love it x

LadyBird1973 · 17/06/2023 09:22

I think it was brilliant. The most I can make is a banana loaf and sometimes even that turns out iffy!
Well done - am glad he loved it.

inloveandmarried · 17/06/2023 09:28

That's really made with love 💕

My children are adults now but still remember and talk fondly of all their home made birthday cakes.

I did a spider man cake in 2004 and used a (new) plastic birthday tablecloth to cut out the spider man and stick it on the top with icing. Yours is much more thoughtful.

I think it's fab and he'll love it.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 17/06/2023 09:31

Fabulous job! It’s made even more fabulous by battling with buttercream in the heat!
Save me a slice please 😋

PTSDBarbiegirl · 17/06/2023 09:32

It's bloody brilliant! If anything push a few Spiderman figurss around it. Your DS will be delighted and if my DM had made me a cake It would be a great memory for all time. Well done OP! Enjoy the birthday and the cake.

Couldyounot · 17/06/2023 09:33

I'd scarcely know where to start with making something like that, OP. Fair play to you

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 17/06/2023 09:34

That looks amazing!

And massive huge kudos for making it in this heat!

hiredandsqueak · 17/06/2023 09:37

It looks great, I was battling the temperature on Thursday when I made my grandson's dinosaur birthday cake as well. It really held up well and tasted great but spent a lot of time in the fridge to keep it that way. I bet your son will be thrilled.

FlopsiesAngrySandwich · 17/06/2023 09:38

So pleased your son loved it- it's stunning!
And kudos to you creating an 8 layer masterpiece in yesterday's heat. I mainly lay down in it myself. 🤣

Pandorapitstop · 17/06/2023 09:41

Lucky lad to have such a devoted mum. The cake looks great.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 17/06/2023 09:49

Bloody hell, it looks great! Wow. Happy birthday to your son.

QueenoftheNimbleFlyingCat · 17/06/2023 09:54

I bloody wish I could bake cakes. OP it looks amazing and I think it adds an extra level of incredible considering how hot it has been!
