Tell me the truth - cake

So, I’ve literally spent all day baking this cake for my son’s birthday. He wanted a Miles Morales Spider-Man themed cake, featuring the Spot.

I’ve been battling indoor temperatures of 27.5 degrees and finding it stressful. I’m going to refrigerate it and tidy up some of the icing tomorrow morning…but, response from DH was ‘it’s fine!’. Am I wrong to feel upset. It’s not perfect, but my back is killing, it cost a fortune and I’m shattered. He’s backtracking now, but it’s too late. P’d off now and looking for something a bit more constructive or even some finishing advice.

thanks

It’s a lot better than the cake I made this afternoon! I think it looks lovely and will be a wow cake at the party!

I only wanted a fairly basic sponge cake which I will fill with lemon curd, strawberries and a cream cheese frosting then cover the top layer with more frosting and loads of strawberries. The theme is Midsummer and it’s a Swedish cake I found on Pinterest. Stupidly I decided to use the new recipe for the sponge rather than my regular sponge recipe ( good old Mary Berry recipe) so it had juice of three lemons and quite a lot of buttermilk making it more like a batter.

After an extra 20 mins it was still raw underneath so I had to take it out of the tin and put on a tray back in the oven. I ended up with burnt biscuity edges and a middle which had the texture of cold Yorkshire pudding!

So at 8pm I started again using my tried and trusted recipe having thrown the first attempt away! I guess it’s my fault for being over ambitious on a very hot day when being in the kitchen was a bad idea!

That cake is seriously awesome. Well done you. I’d be delighted with it at 58.
You’ve done a fabulous job and it’s going to be the showstopper. Bet it tastes delicious as well.

Me too!

I would be chuffed to bits if I’d made that, it’s really good!

I feel your pain with decorating cakes in the heat, it makes it a million times harder.

Rainbowqueeen · 17/06/2023 03:51

It looks fab. Hope he has a great birthday

Furries · 17/06/2023 03:56

The cake is amazing! Make sure you keep the photos. I still, many decades later, remember a few cakes that my mum made - came across photos of them recently and my memory served me correct.

Hope your son has a lovely birthday.

crazycatladyof6 · 17/06/2023 04:49

Amazing!! Well done!!

Pancakeorcrepe · 17/06/2023 07:23

It’s a fabulous cake, your boy will love it!

Leonardsfavouritecake · 17/06/2023 07:32

It is a beautiful cake. Your son will love it. When I was growing up my lovely Mum would make us a cake of our choice for our birthdays. I remember how special it made me feel that she had done that just for me. The fact that you made it, and it is awesome will hopefully make your son very happy.

It's amazing! I'm so impressed. My dh has only two adjectives "nice" and "rubbish". Cld your husband suffer the same shit vocabulary?

MythosK · 17/06/2023 07:52

Another vote for, it's brilliant! And it has an amazing ingredient-LOVE!

🤣. Spot on!

OP, I'm well jealous. Is it chocolate or vanilla sponge? Phwoor it looks so lovely.

I get emotional when my daughter bakes me cupcakes - your son will be blown away. It's a fabulous piece of work.

MindPalace · 17/06/2023 07:58

I think I’d need to try a slice to be sure - let me know when I can pop round, OP.

Looks fab - hope your son loves it! 🎂

Deathraystare · 17/06/2023 08:05

I imagine your son will be thrilled with the cake unless he is the image of your husband but I think young kids (assuming he is young?) still have some enthusiasm for life and not everything is just 'fine', ok etc.

I don't have much knowledge of Spiderman but I know a good cake when I see one. Have you posted it on FB?? I love looking at cakes on FB but sadly I am on my own and diabetic so would be a waste of time baking!

GetDownkeith · 17/06/2023 08:15

Your ds will love it! I rambert a few years ago making a cake for ds1 and I was disappointed in how it turned out. It looked very home made and I just hadn't white pulled off my vision i was worried he wpuld be disappointed.
He absolutely loved it still looks back on it fondly and tells me I did a great job. He is also one of the most unreasonable human beings I have ever met so it was high praise indeed from him.

I think you've done a great job it looks fantastic.

Mumof118 · 17/06/2023 08:27

Good morning and thank you for the lovely comments! It has really boosted my confidence.

DH very repentant, said he meant to tell me it was fine as in ‘don’t worry’ when I was fretting about the finish…but apparently he thinks it’s great.

In answer to some of the questions, it’s a vanilla sponge with raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream. We are not chocolate cake lovers in this house , we’re boring lol. There are eight layers, so it’s a pretty tall cake.

And DS is 18, so not so little 😂 but he’s a huge Miles Morales SpiderMan fan and he was absolutely over the moon with his cake this morning! I actually got a hug!!!

Thank you again. I decided not to mess with it anymore after reading the posts here. I really appreciated the positivity 🥰

It’s such a skill- you have done wonderfully, glad your 18yr old loved it!
My mother in law made me a tiramisu cake for my birthday, it made me cry it was such a thoughtful thing to do.
Hope you have a great day celebrating 🥳

Rufffles · 17/06/2023 08:35

I'd be well happy with that! Have fun x

whataboutme77 · 17/06/2023 08:36

You've done a great job, your ds will love it!

SuffolkUnicorn · 17/06/2023 08:36

Looks amazing op it’s made with love and those things taste the best

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 17/06/2023 08:41

awww

it's awesome OP

you must have had the oven on all day to make 8 layers! a real labour of love for your boy. so glad he appreciates it

SprinkleRainbow · 17/06/2023 08:42

OP working with buttercream is a challenge in itself, add into the mix a boiling hot day and probably a hot house and it becomes almost impossible!
I spent 18 hours on my last cake and still wasn't happy with the finish 🤣
You've done an amazing job, it looks amazing and you should be proud!
Also if it helps, my DH says the same it's fine but he does genuinely mean stop panicking and fretting because he could never have the patience to do it! So if your DH has elaborated on his comment I wouldn't take it to be an insult 😊 when you're in that zone though every comment comes to a knife edge 🤣

continentallentil · 17/06/2023 08:45

That’s commitment! It’s a lot more than fine. your son will love it

chocspot · 17/06/2023 08:49

It looks great!

DD's birthday is in July and it's been hot ever year so far, so I can sympathise with how tricky it is to decorate a cake in the heat!
