I actually in a strange way like these "Gosh, I have X connection to the area" and think myself when there are attacks in the news.

They're reminders of the little intricacies of community and the way we are webbed together. At times of crisis, people get together, people share, people chat. We're an online doorstep.

I find it different to grief vulture posts.

Florenz · 13/06/2023 18:09

Serious terrorists wouldn't kill people like this, random stabbings and running people over at 4am. They'd do it a time when they could maximise the number of victims. This will be a mentally ill person.

Did this happen?

Did this happen?

Press conference from this evening.

As you all know, today there has been a shocking and tragic series of events which has led to the lives of three innocent people being taken and left another member of the public in a critical condition in hospital.

My thoughts are with all the families affected by this horrific incident, and we are working extremely hard to understand exactly what has happened.

I can tell you that a 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attacks and I can reassure the public that it is safe to visit the city centre – though there may be some road restrictions as we continue to establish what has happened.

Police were first called to Ilkeston Road just after 4am after a member of the public reported that two people, aged 19, had been stabbed in the street and were unresponsive.

We had a further call to another incident in Milton Street where the driver of a stolen van had attempted to run over three people. As a result, one man is in hospital in a critical condition while two others are believed to have suffered minor injuries.

The van was then stopped on Maple Street where a man was tasered and detained by officers on suspicion of murder.

A man in his 50s was also found dead from knife injuries in Magdala Road by a member of the public. At the moment, we believe that the suspect had stolen this man’s vehicle and driven it to Milton Street where he drove at members of the public.

We are still in the early stages of the investigation and need to determine the motives behind these attacks.

We are keeping an ‘open mind’ and are working alongside Counter Terrorism Policing to establish the facts – as we would normally do in these types of circumstances.

The families of all of the victims have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Officers have also carried out a number of searches at addresses across the city to gather evidence, but no further arrests have been made.

A dedicated team of detectives is investigating the circumstances surrounding these incidents and will continue to gather evidence over the coming days.

I want to thank those who live and work in our city for their patience and understanding in incredibly difficult circumstances. We will, of course, keep the public updated as soon as we are able to say more.

This is a very sad day for our city and we will do everything possible for the victims and their families

I live in Nottingham, in fact I live very close to a street where a cordon is in place due to the presence of a van that the police are or were searching, I am also reasonably close to the road where there has been a massive armed police raid. Whole city is disrupted, we do not know at this stage who is responsible or what motivated them and there is some very unhelpful speculation on this thread. All I know is that 3 people have lost their lives and this is terrible. The other thing I am aware of is that people are shocked and upset. Apart from living close to where some of the events occurred I ama slo very familiar with and have often walked down the streets where other events have happened. It is really unsettling and I have felt quite distressed today.

I'm so sorry this is so close to home for you, it must be terrifying. Also so sorry to those who have lost loved ones or had their family members injured.

Poor families sending their children to university for them to be killed. How many more children need to be killed this way before something is done. It’s not right.

Before 'something is done' er....like what? What would you like 'done'

Looks very concerning, who are all the men in maroon and black gear?

Bomb disposal team

Ohhhhh I see!!!

Well thank god you came along to tell us what it will be!!

AllPlayedOut · 13/06/2023 18:38

It's utterly horrific regardless of the motive but it's frustrating to see as usual so many resorting to the "No True Scotsman" fallacy every single time. We don't have enough information to know what the motive was yet but you can be a Christian and a terrorist(I saw people claiming that you can't be both on the Annecy thread and that's nonsense ) You can be a Muslim and a terrorist and you can be both mentally ill and a terrorist. You can be mentally ill and still know what you're doing or you may be completely detached from reality or anything in between.

Bomb disposal team

The BBC website and numerous posters on the thread have explained who they are. Not bomb disposal.

That's not true though, the very ethos of terror isn't necessarily to kill as many as possible but to spread terror and fear. I'd say a random attack in the early hours of the morning fits that as its unexpected. Not speculating whether this was terror related or not, but its more complex.

Overthinkingnotdrinking · 13/06/2023 18:44

@JustGeorgie Criminal justice system that imprisons people convicted of violence for a very long time. Background checks on all people moving to the U.K. If you provide them can’t move here. Actual national borders being enforced, to stop criminals skipping through the net. Security service to properly monitor anyone involved in extremism. Swift deportation for anyone committing crimes. You know, a functional society that looks after the law abiding people that live here. What’s your answer?

Fallenties · 13/06/2023 18:46

SilenceOfTheGoats · 13/06/2023 17:56

@Fallenties

I don't know, you seem pretty outraged yourself and offended by some people being offended. As you say, people are human which means they can feel how they want right?

I'm not offended I just hate it when people seek to belittle and sneer at others for no reason. Sure people can feel how they want, why they feel the need to type it is another issue.

I don’t see the point in closing down avenues which is why the press conference states this

@herealone @HothouseFlower

I. Dislike comments like yours putting a spin on someone merely saying they have a connection to the area.

Comments like yours are insensitive and ramp up emotions on tense threads where people have come to chat (on a chat forum) and process this news.

I don't know this area at all, the area meanwhile nothing to me at all. Of course if you this happened somewhere i knew it would resonance more because you can picture where it happens!!

JustGeorgie · 13/06/2023 18:49

This was the work of one male.

Why are you rambling on about immigration, borders and deportation??

I work in the justice system. We do what we do.

I may be wrong but as far as I am aware, there has been no mention of whether the suspect is from the U.K. or otherwise.

JustGeorgie · 13/06/2023 18:51

@lollipoprainbow Well said. We don't have a clue who's coming in to this country.

I have clearly missed an update! We ho is this man and where's he from?

Clearly the implication is that the person involved might be someone who has arrived in this country other than through legal channels

herealone · 13/06/2023 18:53

Lifeomars · 13/06/2023 17:40

I agree that it is about the victims, but I live very close to the area where one of the killings took place and about 5 minutes away from where a van is being searched in a cordoned off street. I feel very unsettled by this, it is not a good area, lots of crime and can feel quite unsafe so it is not unatural for those of us close to the scene(s) to feel uneasy about what has happened.

And I live close as well, and?

Overthinkingnotdrinking · 13/06/2023 18:53

@JustGeorgie you asked me what I would do to make the country safer. I answers. You miss my first point, long prison sentences for people who commit violence. I will eat my hat if this is the first time the man has been violent…
