Do you pay for Spotify?

SharkSip · 12/06/2023 14:50

I recently found Spotify. I knew what it was for a long time but I wasn't interested. I joined and paid for a monthly subscription. I love it. I can find music I love and I am discovering more too.

The idea of paying a monthly subscription doesn't really appeal to me though.

My partner says he uses it but he doesn't pay..

What's that all about?

Will he be allowed to listen to while albums or fast forward songs or shuffle?
Where as I have more control over albums.

I don't know what the difference is.

I used to be on iTunes and I had a huge collection built on my iPod. Then I got locked out of my iPod and lost so much of my music. I was so so so sore after that.

I use it quite a lot but don't pay for it. You just get some ads you can't skip and I think usually limited number of skips but I just make playlists up so don't usually skip anyway

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 12/06/2023 15:00

Iirc your can only skip a handful of songs per day on the free version. And you get ads every so many songs too.
I switched to premium a few years ago, and it will be one of the last things to go for me if I have to cut back on subs in the future.
I pay for the family account and the hours of music we've used it for have been more than worth it.

gogohmm · 12/06/2023 15:04

We have a family account with 5 of us on it, good value!

I pay for it. I have a family package and use all my slots, for other peoples accounts.

But I'd pay for it...probably at this price even if it was just me.

Premium allows you you to download playlists for offline listening (amazing for saving data and in the car), no ads, no limits on skips - I remember this being super restrictive - something like 5 a day.

I trialed premium and never went back. The quality and selection.

I don't have a cd player, and have Google home - I don't think it works without a premium account (or amazon/apple/you music).

MyMachineAndMe · 12/06/2023 15:14

We have a family account as above for all 4 of us. Before that I used the free version but the ads were annoying, as was only being able to skip a certain number of songs within half an hour (even though I have added all the songs I love, for some reason I have to be in a certain mood to listen to them, if that makes sense).

BillieShears · 12/06/2023 15:15

Yes. I can't imagine my life without it. I still buy physical records but only vinyl.

Midnightslikethis · 12/06/2023 15:56

I do. No adverts, can download for listening in the car/on dog walks. It seems like a lot at £10/month but I use it for hours everyday.

ThunderclapCloud · 12/06/2023 15:58

I pay for it but i listen to it all the time. DH shares my accounts. Podcasts and music, free downloading and no adverts unless they are part of podcasts. I'd be bereft without it now.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 12/06/2023 15:58

I pay for it so I can listen offline and don't have to put up with endless adverts.

I use it everyday and it's well worth the cost.

megletthesecond · 12/06/2023 16:00

Yes. I pay for premium for me and my 2 teens. £18 a month. I figure it's the price of 2 CD's. I can't listen to adverts when I'm running and am always skipping tracks.
I wish we could go back to £1 a song and own them again.

ReviewingTheSituation · 12/06/2023 16:01

I do - all the music I want/need right there at my fingertips. I use it for running, DH listens in the car. Worth every penny.

LadyHag · 12/06/2023 16:08

Pay for family premium, worth every penny!

Premium means, iirc, tracks can be downloaded to devices and listened to out and about not just home, 2 dc use it on way to and from school, out and about, I have it in all the time at work sat on my own listening to music and out and about in car, ohh to think of the old days we had to save up spend to pick an album cassette to buy once a month and hope you liked it, passing it round your mates for everyone to record it 😂

Elphame · 12/06/2023 16:16

I did.

It didn't survive the financial purge last year. I can't say I miss it much.

ASGIRC · 12/06/2023 16:35

I dont usually pay for it.
Only when they have a 3 months for the price of 1 offer. Then cancel, and only subscribe once it pops up again (usually after about 3/4 months)

The free version is fine. Some ads, only 6 skips per hour, and, on your phone, you can only listen on shuffle.
But if you have it on a laptop, you can do whatever you want.

SaveMeFromForearms · 12/06/2023 16:38

Yes. And I probably use it for 10 hours or so every day, as do the kids.

I'd easily pay double for it to be honest. Unlimited music adds to me quality of life more than I can say.

TheGriffle · 12/06/2023 16:40

It’s the only subscription we now pay for after getting rid of Amazon, Netflix and Disney. We have the family one and we use it every day. In the car, the kids use it on their alexas and I always stick it on when I’m doing the dishwasher or when we’re having tea.

I had the free version before we got family and found it very restrictive with the limited number of skips. I’m another who has hundreds of songs on their playlist but I’m not in the mood to listen to all of them.

Glittertwins · 12/06/2023 16:55

We also have a family account, definitely worth it as DCs listen to all sorts

HideTheCroissants · 12/06/2023 17:07

We have family premium and think it’s worth it. We make and download playlists to use for parties etc., can listen uninterrupted…. Well worth it in my opinion. DH, DD and I listen when working out so interruptions would be a pain. DD downloads to her sport watch, Bluetooths her earbuds and can exercise with her phone safely locked in her locker at the gym.

OldTinHat · 12/06/2023 17:14

Nope.

Chasingadvice · 12/06/2023 17:15

Yes and YouTube premium. I don't want ads neither do I want to be unable to close the YouTube app and have it stop playing.

Humerushummus · 12/06/2023 17:17

I love Spotify. I pay for it.

The adverts are so annoying. Last week I heard an advert for Deezer!

I think Spotify need to look into that 😂

Blarn · 12/06/2023 17:18

I've paid for it for years, the family plan I think so dh has it. I don't want ads in my music and I listen to it everyday, definitely worth the money for me.

usernother · 12/06/2023 17:21

I pay for it and use it every day.
it's worth it for me because the adverts were very irritating.

GloomySkies · 12/06/2023 17:22

I pay for it. They do a round up of your usage each year, the amount of hours I've spent listening to it is crazy. Podcasts while I commute, classical music on headphones to block out the noise in my open plan office, pop music for dancing with the kids, DD does musical theatre so we set up play lists with all her new songs to help her learn them quickly, noisy music for cleaning the house, podcasts again for getting to sleep. The ads would drive me insane if I had them all day long and I adore being able to try new albums, find old ones, and tailor my listening exactly to my whims.

(Not sponsored by Spotify!)

Errolwasahero · 12/06/2023 17:22

I refuse to pay a subscription for music because if I ever want/have to stop I will lose it all (as I did when I had iTunes for a while). I buy cds instead so I own it and use the radio, free Spotify and you tube to find new music.
