Cringe expressions

I know this has been covered loads of times but here it is again. Feel free to ignore. Does anyone else positively cringe when reading or hearing people say 'would of' 'could of', 'should of' instead of have? It makes my toes curl 🤦‍♀️🤣

Absolutely cannot stand "little man", it just makes my skin crawl.

Contrary to PP, using "cringe" as an adjective seems very normal to me. Maybe this is just because it was slang used amongst my age group from school age onwards so it just seems unremarkable.

Exactly why I made this mistake. I've heard cringe used as a slang adjective so often I repeated it without thinking.

"jumping" on a call (this has really started getting on my nerves at work recently)
impact as a verb
gifting unless in the context of gifting land
"reaching out" when you mean contact/get in touch with
A "cheeky" glass of wine (or any other alcoholic beverage or anything else)
#making memories #famalam #hollibobs #the hubster #blessed
nom nom
squeaky bum time (actually that's not "cringe", it's just horrible)
myself when you mean me
excited "for" when you mean excited about
talking "to" when you mean talking about

GreenWheat · 11/06/2023 16:34

Any kind of cooking that involves "slinging", "chucking" or "popping" things in the oven. Ditto any need to "jump" or "hop" on a bus.

lieselotte · 11/06/2023 16:35

"Drop" as in our range has dropped. Can't you just say we've launched our new range? I am probably being a bit reactionary over that one though.

Same with "edit". Again, what's wrong with our new range, or our new selection?

'Excited for' Argghh! 🤣

‘dirty’
Was perusing a menu, and saw a ‘dirty vegan burger’. Sounded yummy, but had to ask what made it dirty.
Why does everything come with some weird additional label, can’t it just be a vegan burger, FFS?

What does that actually mean Grin Did you find out?

lieselotte · 11/06/2023 16:36

I've just thought of another one. "Wait list". It used to be waiting list.

GreenWheat · 11/06/2023 16:36

People who "source ingredients" when they actually just go to the supermarket like the rest of us.

MrsLampard · 11/06/2023 16:42

I was sat...
Holibobs
'and just like that my little man is 53 months...' 🤬

And it's a queue not a que!

MrsLampard · 11/06/2023 16:44

Oh and 'the school run'- don't know why I but it gives me rage

isocrazy · 11/06/2023 17:01

"partner in crime" said in wedding vows. I actually shudder Envy

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/06/2023 17:03

Peeps
Baby steps

I often used to see ‘rest bite’ on a forum for carers of people with dementia. Pedant though I am, I couldn’t get too irritated in that context - the poor things were usually desperate for a ‘bite’ of ‘rest’ so presumably it made sense to them.

AustralianCrunch · 11/06/2023 17:05

The term 'making whoopie' makes me feel queasy 🤢

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/06/2023 17:11

@MrsTwiggy , you say of as uv? As in 'Both uv you' or 'Uv the three, the first one'? Confused

I detest the use of below, as in 'From the below, pick an answer.'

Spanielsarepainless · 11/06/2023 17:12

It's free rein, not free reign. Ditto reining in not reigning in.

WonderDays · 11/06/2023 17:14

I’ve done Croatia/Italy etc, this really winds me up.

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 11/06/2023 17:34

"Welcomed" instead of "Gave birth",
The style reports in tabloids - "she opted for an indigo ensemble" where "She chose a blue outfit" would do,
"Stepping out" instead of "Going for a walk"

Mummysaf · 11/06/2023 16:14

I genuinely saw someone write ‘spag bowl with the clang’ a few days ago, alongside a picture of them and their family.
They must of meant ‘spag bol with the clan’ 😬

Hideous

HomeB · 11/06/2023 18:04

"Love you all the world"

What? That makes no fucking sense.

HomeB · 11/06/2023 18:07

"I genuinely saw someone write ‘spag bowl with the clang’ a few days ago, alongside a picture of them and their family.

Must HAVE meant

strawberriesarenot · 11/06/2023 18:13

'Reach out', 'share', 'sobbing and shaking,' 'be kind,' (so not practical)'empath,' all the quack therapy stuff.

Scalottia · 11/06/2023 18:13

Must have! Glass houses and all that.

SammyScrounge · 11/06/2023 18:17

'Lived experience '
Is there any other kind?

Growlybear83 · 11/06/2023 18:23

Getting 'the rage'
Upthread
Reaching out to someone
Picky bits

I agree with lots of others that have already been mentioned - snuck, little man, gifted(when talking about giving someone a present), pack up, baby daddy.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 11/06/2023 18:38

Agree with "reaching out" - I only seem to hear this at work. I didn't reach out, I asked you a question. Also 'may' instead of can is creeping in a lot "please may you do this for me", "please may whoever left their car here move it". Hate it.
