Cringe expressions

I know this has been covered loads of times but here it is again. Feel free to ignore. Does anyone else positively cringe when reading or hearing people say 'would of' 'could of', 'should of' instead of have? It makes my toes curl 🤦‍♀️🤣

The use of ‘Staycation’ as word for a holiday in the UK.
Staycation is when you stay at home and have day trips out.
A holiday in the UK is just called a ‘holiday’.

The idea that only a holiday abroad qualifies as a holiday is ridiculous, not to mention the fact that holidays abroad are expensive and very bad for climate change so no one should be taking them.

Totally agree.

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/06/2023 14:51

@dropthevipers, and 'reach out'. Aaaargh!

I don't like 'Aaawww' or 'Bless' either

nidgey · 11/06/2023 14:53

'property' instead of flat or house or cottage or bungalow or castle

“I was today years old when I found out…” - the usage of this seems to have exploded over the last few years and the fact that it makes no sense whatsoever drives me insane.

‘Nom-noms’ is a vile term

Hubby/Hubster

@sammylady37 you don't have to like it, but it makes total sense. I've no idea why you think it doesn't.

..and just for the record, it's not some I do or would say.

I haven't heard/seen mom mom in YEARS! (Thank god)

Rest Bite always makes me smile. (And hope they get some soon!!)

EyelessArseFace · 11/06/2023 15:00

'Curated' is grim, especially when applied to a plate of food in a poncy restaurant. Even more so when it costs 19.5

Tidsleytiddy · 11/06/2023 15:02

In a click, instead of clique
Turnt instead of turned
Off of instead of from
Should of
Would of
The confusion of passed and past
His/he’s
There, there and they’re. All irritating but loathsome, ridiculous speech like “middle for diddle”. I can’t bear it.

Lucyoflucca · 11/06/2023 15:05

"I did a thing."
So annoying.

IWFH · 11/06/2023 15:06

Fur baby
Staycation meaning a UK holiday.
Literally when it isn't.
Less when it should be fewer or vice versa.
And yes, cringe when it should be cringeworthy.

kingtamponthefurred · 11/06/2023 15:07

"Have a read of'. Why use four words where only one is necessary?

HowardKirksConscience · 11/06/2023 15:08

'confuzzled'

'tret' for treated

'need gone' instead of 'it needs to go'

All awful.

Ageingweightlifter · 11/06/2023 15:10

makes me vom. so twee. and cats are cats in their own cat nature...

I don’t think it makes sense. ‘Today years old’. ‘Today’ isn’t indicating the quantity of time, it’s merely a specific point in time. I get that what people are indicating is that they’ve just learned something, but I don’t think it makes sense grammatically.

EyelessArseFace · 11/06/2023 14:31

No, I don't cringe about that. But then I don't say would have, could have or should have. I say would've etc.

Many people spell things they way they were taught - ie phonetically, so would've sounds like would of, so they spell it that way.

I'll never understand the reason behind teaching young children to write words the way they sound. The 'would of' mistake is a perfect example of why children taught this way leave school believing this is appropriate. I know university students who remain writing words as they sound.

@silverseas1, I can't understand why anyone would spell 'could have' as 'could of'. Have and Of don't sound the same.
Even 'could've' doesn't sound like 'could of', it sound's like 'could uv'

Maybe my ears are better at picking up sounds

Mummysaf · 11/06/2023 16:14

I genuinely saw someone write ‘spag bowl with the clang’ a few days ago, alongside a picture of them and their family.
They must of meant ‘spag bol with the clan’ 😬

MrsTwiggy · 11/06/2023 16:18

Absolutely cannot stand "little man", it just makes my skin crawl.

Contrary to PP, using "cringe" as an adjective seems very normal to me. Maybe this is just because it was slang used amongst my age group from school age onwards so it just seems unremarkable.

Depending on the sentence, I would pronounce 'of' in exactly the same way as I'd pronounce the 've' in 'could've'.

LoobyDop · 11/06/2023 16:24

“Cringe” as an adjective annoys the hell out of me, as does “chill”. Also any use of “whisper it”, which seems to be particularly beloved of the kind of fashion journalist who can’t say “leather” without adding “butter soft” or “white shirt” without adding “crisp”.

LibertyLily · 11/06/2023 16:28
