What are the best TV Themes?

We've had a lot of lovely nostalgic threads lately which I've really enjoyed so I wondered what people's favourite TV themes are, both adult and children's TV.

I wasn't around for the original series and haven't actually watched it but the Black Beauty theme has to be one of the best. For some reason it makes me cry every time.

i love all of these - is somebody going to do a Spotify playlist? I just wanted to add the South Bank Show for good measure.

I have Succession as my ring tone.

I love the Cheers one, if makes me well up…. …..Wouldn’t you like to get away…?

My favorite was the theme from "Taxi"

LaMaG · 11/06/2023 17:24

MacGyver.
I remember bringing my cassette player over near the TV and lining up a blank tape to record it. I think you has to press 2 buttons together to record. Sound quality was terrible but I was delighted.

wildinthecountry · 11/06/2023 18:10

Yeah I remember pressing play and record , mostly to record the top 40 . I wonder how many generations did that .😊

Not 'great' theme tunes, but definitely nostalgia value:

For those of us old enough to remember the excitement of a teacher wheeling in a humungous box tv, and being 'allowed' to watch late 1970s/early '80s primary schools programming, these will bring back memories!

The theme tune to Who Do You Think You Are gets me every time. There's something so evocative about it - questioning and curious but really calm and traditional at the same time.

ALongHardWinter · 12/06/2023 00:42

I like The Sweeney's theme tune, not the brash intro one,but the closing one at the end. I've always thought it sounds very wistful.

RobertsRadio · 12/06/2023 01:38

My first thought was Van der Valk and Vicar of Dibley, but I also love all of the sports theme tunes like Grandstand, Ski Sunday, Horse of the Year, Test March Special.

Two theme tunes I absolutely loved were Jam and Jerusalem, "The Village Green Preservation Society" sung by the incomparable Kinks. The other was an old series called Take Three Girls, which ran from 1969 to 1971 and was sung by Pentangle, God I loved that series, there are only a couple of episodes saved on t'internet, the BBC taped over all the episodes as they were wont to do back then.

Catsmere · 12/06/2023 01:46

Due South
Sleepers
In the Red
