Anyone else amazed at the 4 children who survived a plane crash and then 40 days in the Amazon.

I only caught this by chance but on 1st may a plane crashed in the Amazon rainforest killing all the adults aboard. Four children including one baby survived. They have been found alive forty days later!

The eldest was 13 and they're all from an indigenous tribe so familiar with the rainforest but I still think it's incredible.

The Colombian military shared a photo of the children in the jungle

Colombia plane crash: Four children found alive in Amazon after 40 days

It is a "magical day", says the president, as the four siblings are found after 40 days missing.

It's an amazing story, yes. The youngest was only 11 months old when the plane crashed.

pickledandpuzzled · 10/06/2023 14:11

Me! The 13yr old must have carried the baby pretty much the whole time, and the next eldest helped the 3yr old.

Although indigenous, they say they learned from their grandmother so may not have been growing up among an indigenous community, even if they had indigenous roots.

the80sweregreat · 10/06/2023 14:13

It is an incredible survival story against all the odds.
I hope they will be looked after now. Their parents have died and it must have been horrific for them.

HotPenguin · 10/06/2023 14:13

Yes it's amazing, particularly that they were able to care for the baby.

StaySpicy · 10/06/2023 14:13

My husband was telling me about this this morning. Incredible they could not only look after themselves, but look after much smaller children - a baby too! Such a testament to their resilience. Incredible.

maranella · 10/06/2023 14:15

Yes - it's such an amazing and heart-warming story. How on earth did the older DC keep their baby brother alive for all that time? Their parents would be so proud of them. It really is a miracle that they're all still alive.

Isolationendurance · 10/06/2023 14:17

It's heartbreaking and awe-inspiring. I hope they find peace.

Datapotater · 10/06/2023 14:19

Yes! DC and I were absolutely amazed about this. We're guessing there'll be a film one day about it all - probably when they're adults.

The Colombians did an amazing job to drop leaflets with survival tips and other supplies. Brilliant! Those brave and strong kids.

Anyone else read the Bear Grylls jungle survival books??

sashagabadon · 10/06/2023 14:19

what clever and resourceful children. I can’t imagine U.K. kids doing similar.
reminds me of the Thai boys trapped in the cave and the leader was a teen.

WallaceinAnderland · 10/06/2023 14:22

Such a bittersweet story. The trauma that they must have experienced, especially the older two. Seeing their mother dead and having to fend for themselves. Amazing that they kept the littlest two alive and wonderful that they were found.

justgettingthroughtheday · 10/06/2023 14:35

It's just incredible that they survived! Both the crash and then the following 40 days!

Odds are at least some of them must have been injured in the crash - all other occupants deceased. So to then be able to not only survive themselves but keep a baby alive is just incredible!

I hope they all get whatever support they need having been through such a traumatic experience.

CorBlimeyGovnr · 10/06/2023 14:37

It’s absolutely remarkable, especially the baby surviving

NatureNurture85 · 10/06/2023 14:37

I hope whoever monetises this and there will be plenty of Hollywood producers knocking on their doors, agents etc etc give a significant share of the proceeds to the children/their community to benefit the children. So much trauma to work through. This will be a long and difficult journey.

lljkk · 10/06/2023 14:38

Top News Story of the day. X fingers they regain full physical strength. Thanks for reminder :).

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/06/2023 14:43

It's an amazing story. I wondered about injuries given that the 3 adults were killed in the crash.

Apparently trackers found traces of the children (half eaten fruit, an improvised shelter) but couldn't locate them. Helicopters flew over the area broadcasting their grandmother's voice reassuring them that help was coming and telling them not to keep moving but to stay in the same place to make them easier to find. I don't know if they heard it though.

What Brave and resourceful children, especially the eldest.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/06/2023 14:47

That teenager is amazing.
It shows how much we underestimate teenagers here.

pontipinemum · 10/06/2023 15:01

Wow that is truly amazing! I can't imagine how their grandparent even the whole country felt when they were found.

5childrenand · 10/06/2023 15:01

It’s absolutely amazing. What incredible children, especially keeping the baby alive too.

It’s also the plot of The Explorers by Katherine Rundell which is a fab children’s book and well worth reading.

Caspianberg · 10/06/2023 15:04

The news reports that’s 10,000 leaflets with survival instructions and walking them to not keep moving around were dropping in by helicopter in the hope they would find them. At the same time parcels of food and bottled water were also dropped in by helicopter.
Hopefully they found some

Takemyselfdancing · 10/06/2023 15:07

I can’t believe they kept the baby alive for all that time.

It made me think of this book too.

Absolutely amazing, very brave.

BringMeTea · 10/06/2023 15:10

What incredible children. Especially the oldest who looks to be a girl. Truly incredible resourcefulness. 💙

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 10/06/2023 15:16

It's an incredible story. I have been following the search since they first talked about it on the news, and was so moved to hear that they had all survived.

Hats off to that 13yo who did such a fabulous job of keeping their younger siblings alive in such difficult circumstances. The courage, the resourcefulness and the resilience that they must have required is mind boggling, especially after having endured the crash and the loss of their parents. Amazing.

I hope that the media will leave them alone now to recover and reconnect with whatever family they have left. And I hope that, one day, that kid is honoured in some way for what she has achieved.

croft89 · 10/06/2023 15:17

This is amazing

There will definitely be a film made in the future!

HairyToity · 10/06/2023 18:59

This news has made my day. I find it quite inspiring, the human survival instinct, and how they looked after each other.
