Anyone else amazed at the 4 children who survived a plane crash and then 40 days in the Amazon.

I only caught this by chance but on 1st may a plane crashed in the Amazon rainforest killing all the adults aboard. Four children including one baby survived. They have been found alive forty days later!

The eldest was 13 and they're all from an indigenous tribe so familiar with the rainforest but I still think it's incredible.

The Colombian military shared a photo of the children in the jungle

Colombia plane crash: Four children found alive in Amazon after 40 days

It is a "magical day", says the president, as the four siblings are found after 40 days missing.

It is an incredible survival story against all the odds.
I hope they will be looked after now. Their parents have died and it must have been horrific for them.

They still have their father, he wasn’t on the plane (was the mother and the pilot who died).

Cherrysoup · 10/06/2023 21:20

Utterly amazing, I hope they have good family who will protect them from the media.

Florissant · 10/06/2023 21:22

Poor things. I wish them well.

Cherrysoup · 10/06/2023 21:26

That’s an astonishing article, thank you for sharing.

Florissant · 10/06/2023 21:28

Thanks for sharing that link, @coxesorangepippin.

I’m glad my DC weren’t involved. They might have made sure everyone came out with lovely eyelashes

Bunnycat101 · 10/06/2023 21:53

It’s a miracle. I honestly don’t know how they coped with the trauma of the crash and kept the little ones alive. It would have been hard enough for the older two dealing with the aftermath of the crash but the fact they become responsible for two very vulnerable children in a dangerous situation is just something I can’t comprehend. My own 4yo is a liability at the best of times- I can’t imagine looking after a little one that age following a crash like that in the middle of the jungle and adding in the baby as well.

OhDoh · 10/06/2023 21:57

this made me cry. They did their mother proud. It's a bittersweet story but how the older ones kept themselves alive let alone the younger ones is beyond me. They are amazing. X

tourdefrance · 10/06/2023 22:28

Children are capable of so much more than we realise. Such a lovely story.

ImustLearn2Cook · 10/06/2023 23:53

@coxesorangepippin I just read this. Thx for the link. The reality/the true story of how children survived without adults on a deserted, classed as inhabitable, island for over a year is so much better and more profoundly positive than the fictional depiction of what children would do.

@OctaviaPole thx for the thread. I hadn’t caught up with the news so didn’t know. How incredibly remarkable. Such bravery, resilience and resourcefulness. RIP their mother and others who died in the plane crash.

Hairday · 10/06/2023 23:57

I basically love that oldest girl. 😍😍😍

Clytemnestra21 · 11/06/2023 00:23

Yes! Incredible

HRTQueen · 11/06/2023 00:55

I’ve just been reading about these children

its incredible their resilience. poor little things the trauma they have been through. I hope they shall get lots of support and they are not exploited

Deathraystare · 11/06/2023 18:38

Amazing!

PrincessFiorimonde · 11/06/2023 21:52

Those are amazing children.

bevelino · 11/06/2023 22:01

Apparently they heard their grandmother’s voice over the forest telling them to stay put, which was a great idea.

AdoraBell · 11/06/2023 22:07

Astonishing, apparently the eldest child has knowledge of predators and the jungle but still amazing because anything could have killed then. Animals, infection if they got a scratch, dehydration.

We were in Panama and friends wanted to go the jungle, they were told they’d need 12 litres of water per day just to replace what they would sweat.

Abhannmor · 11/06/2023 22:18

Yes that's the one !

Such a positive story. The bigger boys looked after the smallies. Restored my faith in humanity.

Noicant · 11/06/2023 22:24

The 13yr old girl is amazing, I can’t imagine the horror they went through but she managed to keep the 4 of them alive, extraordinary.

Maggiethecat · 11/06/2023 22:39

I do wonder if there was possibly any human help in the jungle?

I was thinking the same thing. DS is 13 and still phones me from the barber to remind him how to ask for his favoured hair cut 🙄

I read The Explorer with DD a couple of years ago and this good news immediately reminded me of it. Having actually been to the rainforest on holiday last year, I'm doubly impressed. I wouldn't have the first clue of what was safe to eat or how to drink safely or even which trees will drip caustic sap on your head if you try to sleep under them.

SkiingIsHeaven · 12/06/2023 00:09

Good on their grandma for teaching them survival skills. I read that she made a game of it so they knew what was safe to eat etc.

Absolutely incredible what they achieved.

It’s absolutely amazing. What incredible children, especially keeping the baby alive too.

It’s also the plot of The Explorers by Katherine Rundell which is a fab children’s book and well worth reading.

That book was exactly what I first thought of!!
Both situations had only four children who survived and both took place in the amazon! It's frighteningly similar!
Glad someone else knows about that book, I loved it when I was younger.
