@SerendipityJane oops one C too many!'
A problem with the Tory's in general

Very droll minister.

romatheroamer · 11/06/2023 10:52

I should never have mentioned Conor Burns and Simon Clark. They've come on here under assumed names.

Following Crikeyalmighty lead, that's another 2 Cs we could well do without.

He's not a fat cat above us politicians.

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson attended Eton and Oxford. Bullingdon Club.

Grew up fox hunting from the family's farm on Exmoor.

Received more than £750,000 in fees from speaking engagements in America, India and Portugal during November 2022.

Received earnings, hospitality and donations worth more than £5m over the six months since leaving office.

Sold London house for £1.4 million. Just moved into new £3.8m moated mansion in Oxfordshire.

Gold wallpaper.

Yep, proper man of the people.

Crikeyalmighty · 11/06/2023 10:56

@ilovesooty a selection of my friends (39 to 63) all working , non millionaires, previous mixed voting habits, plus my Tory voting (but not for much longer) 83 year old FIL plus 25 year old working son on £34k all decree that Johnson is a self serving , egotistical twat- although my son conceded he would probably be a laugh to go for a pint with and a gossip.

Oh, @ Clavinova, surely even you can see that whether he was chairing the meetings or not is utterly irrelevant. The point is that he didn't even attend.

It clearly is relevant - four Cobr (alternative name for Cobra) meetings were not chaired (or attended) by the prime minister in Exercise Cygnus.

Don't worry, Baroness Hallett will find out.

And? That was an exercise based on a different hypothetical point in an influenza pandemic, and resulted in a finding that the country's plans, policies and capability were not sufficient to cope with the demands of a severe pandemic. Could it be that having Prime Ministerial involvement would be desirable in order to keep a handle on those plans, policies and capability at an early stage in a different type of pandemic? Admittedly, it would have required a competent Prime Minister to make any real difference, so to the extent that Johnson probably contributed very little you may have a point.

Can you seriously imagine the likes of Thatcher or Major not being at those meetings?

SerendipityJane · 11/06/2023 11:01

To be fair, when Reic0003 confidently states that "Boris is one of us", it is a statement of fact. You just need to determine the bounding parameters of "us". Which seems to be a cunch of bunts. That's a Boris fact I can believe

(In general, dealing with tories, you need to be very aware of where and how the words "you", "we" and "us" and "ours" get placed into discourse. They very often don't follow the accepted definitions)

@janie
Since Boris has resigned as an MP as a result of lying about having parties when such things are illegal, could you perhaps explain to us why you think a 56 year old needed a birthday party, but it was illegal for millions of children?

You know that how?

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 11/06/2023 11:04
  • Who attends a COBRA meeting?
  • Prime Minister (who chairs the meetings)
  • Senior ministers
  • Security officials
  • Civil servants
  • Relevant experts
  • Representatives from the military
  • Representatives from the emergency services

He didn't attend.

It was widely reported that he was telling his children that his latest lover was pregnant at the time of one of the meetings. He missed another meeting as he was cos-playing a fighter pilot for photo opportunities.

Merrymouse · 11/06/2023 11:07

Gold wallpaper

paid for by a party donor - which caused a scandal after more lying - and then Johnson still had to get a loan to pay back the money - and it still fell off the walls and he didn’t even own the property.

He just isn’t very competent, whatever your point of view on policies and politics (which incidentally are very much not Johnson’s priority).

Rhondaa · 11/06/2023 11:07

Good old Bozo/Big Baby etc etc etc, resigned yet still rattling all your cages Grin. Deep breaths, group hug.

Are either of you going to engage in any discussion of the topic in the OP?

Namely Boris Johnson and his resignation as a result of lying about his attendance at illegal parties, including his own birthday party, having made it illegal for millions of children to have birthday parties?

Rhondaa · 11/06/2023 11:07

I find myself realising that all the baby Borises that litter the planet are subject to the laws of aging, as are we all. I wonder if maybe one is approaching a very expensive and media friendly time in their life that requires more hush money support.

Jgw1. He has gone now calm your jets and do stop going on about 'parties'. Maybe some kind of soothing music may help? A sit out in the sun?

Have you not noticed that, far from having their cages rattled, most people are deeply enjoying the fact that he's resigned?

I don't think the last gasps from a retiring politician is rattling cages.

I think what is rattling cages is a Government who have wasted the last 13 years on infighting & squabbles rather improving our public services and economy.

They are wasting our time and money.

It's on the 150 question list Covid Inquiry chair Baroness Hallett sent Johnson

"Why did you not attend any COBR meetings in relation to Covid-19 prior to 2 March 2020, given the seriousness of the emergency?"

"Were you advised or requested to attend any of the
previous meetings on 24 January, 29 January, 4 February, 12 February, and 18 February?"
