Do you replace items as and when needed. Or whenever you fancy a change

Out of interest do you replace household decor items example- Kettle/Towels/ Toaster/ pans/ plates/Shower curtain /mirrors as and when needed ie they brake down or generally old and faded

Or do you replace them just because you fancy a change of item/design/colour

I try to use household items until they don't work anymore.
To save money and the environment.

DustyLee123 · 09/06/2023 14:11

As needed. As pp I think of the environment.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 09/06/2023 14:12

Until they are beyond repair, even then I try to repurpose them or use as spare parts. My exception to these rules are toilet seats - always bought a new one when moving homes.

Grumpyfroghats · 09/06/2023 14:14

In general when they break.

Towels/sheets are a bit subjective - my mum will use sheets till they are so threadbare that you can put your foot through them (and then takes them to be mended!). I replace them earlier than that when they show signs of wear.

CornedBeef451 · 09/06/2023 14:14

I do it as needed because I feel bad if it's just because I want to.

I'm currently debating new hand towels as mine are unfurling at the ends and faded/streaked with bleach/no longer fluffy but it seems reckless!

I might go mad and buy two new green ones for the downstairs loo as a compromise and rotate the rest, we've gone from one bathroom to 2 1/2 so get through more than we used to.

Heronmunching · 09/06/2023 14:18

When they break - unless they can be mended instead .. just replacing our sheets which have all been with us about 10 years as people keep putting their feet through them !

Donate them to an animal rescue center? Then you can replace it hem knowing they still have a use! or cut them up and use as cleaning cloths at home. Either is a win win.

GalileoHumpkins · 09/06/2023 14:23

I buy sheets and duvet covers if I see some I like and add them to the revolving pile. I can't imagine using them till our feet go through them! Towels we use until the ends get a bit unravelled, I then give them to a friend who uses them to dry her dogs. Electrical appliances get replaced if they break.

PuttingDownRoots · 09/06/2023 14:24

Generally until they are no longer functional.

Kids towels and bedding have been updated as they have gotten older though... the Peppa Pig towels may still be in good nick but I'm not inflicting them on my nearly 12yo!

JanesBlond · 09/06/2023 14:24

When they are no longer functioning effectively. Do people really fancy a change of toaster?Confused I think the only things of your list I would consider decor are mirrors and shower curtain.

Roystonv · 09/06/2023 14:28

Definitely only when needed. Do not understand posts on Facebook Marketplace "only had 6 months and doesn't go with new colour scheme" and it is something like a sofa. Just how do people afford to be so picky.

deathbyhayfever · 09/06/2023 14:31

I might buy the occasional duvet cover or change curtains when I feel like it, but I can't say I care enough about a toaster or plates to change them unless I need to!

Notanotherhousepost · 09/06/2023 14:33

AS and when I feel like a change. Have been known to change several times in six months.

Life's too short to be bored with stuff.

megletthesecond · 09/06/2023 14:35

When they're broken. It wouldn't occur to me to change anything for the sake of it.

I'm rather fond of the environment and my bank balance.

Susuwatariandkodama · 09/06/2023 14:41

When needed and even then it’s usually a second hand replacement as we just don’t have the income for that kind of stuff.

Ragwort · 09/06/2023 14:46

As needed, but when I was younger I was much more 'into' home furnishings and at one point had about five different sets of china Blush. To be honest I am just not that interested anymore ... so long as something is functional then so what? But my sibling replaces their sofas and redecorates at least every three years Shock and then complains they are skint.

AndYou · 09/06/2023 14:54

When needed, we were one of the last to get rid of our big back tv and get a flatscreen.

It’s not due to finances I just hate shopping and have always been accidently environmentally friendly, I’m tight basically.

caringcarer · 09/06/2023 14:56

As needed for electrical things. I might pick up a new wooden spoon or tea towel but I have a one in one out policy to avoid clutter.

userxx · 09/06/2023 14:58

My friend had a sofa less than a year before replacing with a new one, she was still paying it off monthly and took a hit. Madness.

My bedroom curtains are 13 years old and I fancy a change, dont think thats too bad.

Ponderingwindow · 09/06/2023 14:59

I only replace things when they wear out or no longer meet our functional needs.

johnbelease · 09/06/2023 15:03

Mostly I replace when something breaks or is knackered but will replace sooner if I see something that takes my fancy.

wildinthecountry · 09/06/2023 15:04

I can't understand that you would get bored of functional items , I barely give them a thought unless I'm dreading having to find the money to replace them . I much prefer to spend any spare money on fun .

Cas112 · 09/06/2023 15:07

Depends what it is

JaninaDuszejko · 09/06/2023 15:32

I keep things for decades. I do tend to buy expensive furniture even when buying vintage though so take my time choosing things and don't get bored with them. We have an E. Gomme sideboard I bought on ebay 20 years ago and I still love it, it gives me pleasure everyday.

Things like sheets and towels we use till they wear out. Good reminder about giving used towels to pet rescue places though.
