Do you replace items as and when needed. Or whenever you fancy a change

Out of interest do you replace household decor items example- Kettle/Towels/ Toaster/ pans/ plates/Shower curtain /mirrors as and when needed ie they brake down or generally old and faded

Or do you replace them just because you fancy a change of item/design/colour

Bedding sets I replace once the pillow cases started getting torn, even if the duvet cover is still OK. Other than that, only when broken. I can't imagine saying "I'm a bit bored of this frying pan, think I'll get a new one"!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 09/06/2023 16:46

When it's broken or worn out.. and even then it's a second hand replacement
Disability benefits don't allow for a change of colour scheme just because! Luckily I'm frugal by nature

Thighdentitycrisis · 09/06/2023 16:52

My cooker is 25 years old. yet. Does look a bit grotty I can’t see that’s a reason to replace

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 09/06/2023 16:57

If I see some bedding or tea towels or mugs that I really love, I’ll add them to the rotation.

I’d only replace an appliance and big item if the old one was kaput. The exception was when I had a new kitchen and the cherry red toaster suddenly looked wrong. Like permanent Christmas against the new apple-green tiles.
After much angst, I was able to give it to my brother and splash out on an identical one in cream, which went better with the new colour scheme.

I'm very boring. My crockery is all Denby so it's easy to replace the odd broken plate or bowl. Same with glass wear - I buy ikea stuff so I only buy to replace whatever has been broken.

Appliances are replaced when they are beyond repair; our toaster is 10 years old and I will probably replace it with something like a Dualit which tend to last. We do get through kettles reasonably quickly because our water is really hard, and even with regular descaling and using a water filter, they only last a couple of years at most.

I buy neutral soft furnishings, and furniture so everything sort of matches. A lot of our furniture was second hand, but it's all lovely quality and well designed so will last a lifetime.

DelurkingAJ · 09/06/2023 17:11

Appliances when they die. Bedding I try to buy a set every few years in the sale and then rotate. When sheets wear through I stash them and use the fabric (DS1 needed an Ancient Greek outfit recently for example).

Newname47 · 09/06/2023 17:17

Depends where it's from. We were given a load of hand me downs that never quote worked for us so bought new ones when we could and I didn't feel any guilt there. We did buy really good replacements though in neutral colours so they should be fine to use to death.

Some and some. I have antique white linen sheets I've had for 32 years, not something I'm likely to get bored with. But I hate scruffy towers and buy towels to match the bathroom.

I have some antique plates, all odd, all beautiful which I use for best, I have had some for years. But for every day I have a cheap white modern dinner service, and as bits get lost I will probably replace.

Furniture, it's all antique, not looking like it will wear out! rugs, paintings, furnishings, curtains etc, the same.

But I did replace the toaster, I hated the crumby thing, and it started to look a bit scruffy, I also changed the kettle because I found one I liked better.

I don't buy much new, but equally don't really think too much about the environment, its just habit and necessity.

adularia · 09/06/2023 18:06

When they’re beyond repair. We still have the same towels and bedsheets that we bought nearly 20 years ago - there’s nothing wrong with them so we haven’t replaced them. Electrical appliances only get replaced when the current ones have broken (I use my mobile phones until they die). Crockery, only when it’s broken. We never change decor because we fancy a change.

BonnieGlasses · 09/06/2023 18:15

It depends. I try to only replace things as and when needed, for environmental and financial reasons. I recently got a new kettle, and felt a bit guilty about that as the old one had developed a dodgy lid that was hard to open but it was still technically useable...
On the other hand I do have quite a collection of mugs and duvet covers. I use them all on rotation though.

avocadotofu · 09/06/2023 18:24

As needed as much as possible because we try to consume as little as possible because of the environmental impact.

Noicant · 09/06/2023 18:31

When needed, I don’t see the point of replacing perfectly serviceable items. It’s not a cost issue it’s more about not creating loads of garbage. I’ve had my dryer fixed twice, my bedsheets had a tear so had them mended. I’m not particularly green as a person but I sometimes think about the amount of space my families life takes up in landfill terms and I shudder.

Bedding and appliances when they are no longer usable. For example our kettle (an electric Alessi one) was purchased in 2004 and is still like new. I love the design and whilst it was admittedly expensive (£165 iirc), I think nineteen years is pretty good value for money.

Bedding is replaced when it wears out. Currently we have linen duvet covers etc from Ikea that we bought five years ago when we upgraded to a super king bed, but elsewhere we're using bedding (also ikea) that's probably 10+ years old...although the guest beds aren't used that often!

We did replace a Dualit toaster four years ago after our previous (second hand) one died. The old one was cream but we chose copper this time - partly because it was on sale at the time.

Our saucepans etc are copper - a mix of vintage and new - collected over the past ten years. Before that we'd had stainless steel from Debenhams for fifteen years. We have two sets of cutlery (both Culinary Concepts bought at the 2004 Ideal Home exhibition) which we've no plans to change as they are still in really greet condition. Dinnerware, again we've got two sets both around twenty years old - one is a rustic style from Portugal and the other from Debenhams bought on clearance for very little but I love both.

We have lots of towels (many from Liberty) I got new on ebay ages ago and haven't started using them yet as our older ones just won't die!

Furniture is antique/vintage, as are our mirrors and many of our decorative bits and bobs. Because we buy stuff we love, we tend not to swap things out - some stuff we've had almost thirty years (we're in our 50s and married at 21) - but occasionally we add something new to mix things up a little and we did offload a lot when we downsized in 2018.

My weakness is textiles so I'm always either buying new cushions or else the fabric to make more. We finished some building work (DIY) last year and I treated myself to loads of cushions/fabric to complement the newly decorated spaces. The old ones get sold online so I don't feel as guilty for replacing them 😉

*great

ThePoshUns · 09/06/2023 18:45

Until they pack in.
I replaced my kitchen 6 years ago, my Bosch toaster I already had is the wrong colour and I so want to change it but can't bring myself to until it dies. I don't think it ever will.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 09/06/2023 18:47

Recently got rid of our 40 year old bedroom furniture. The charity shop nearly bit our hands off for it. Then a friend at the other end of the country showed off some new but up-cycled (painted) bedroom furniture - yes, identical to what we'd just got rid of. Three rooms have curtains made for them 25 years ago (yes, we have redecorated in that time!).
Pillow cases & sheets are wearing thin, but the matching duvet covers are not. Think I'll buy plain white pillow cases and sheets, and keep the duvet covers.
