Do you replace items as and when needed. Or whenever you fancy a change

Out of interest do you replace household decor items example- Kettle/Towels/ Toaster/ pans/ plates/Shower curtain /mirrors as and when needed ie they brake down or generally old and faded

Or do you replace them just because you fancy a change of item/design/colour

If it is something I like and good quality, can't be replaced with something as good I will try to get it repaired after researching every possibility. If it breaks again, I give up and replace it.

Towels don't fare well here, water is apparently on the scale of hardest in the country and even after tumbling they retain deposits, even after vinegar wash. Kitchen ones get replaced most as they get a lot of use. I donate towels to animal rescues. Tes towels, I have a family member who takes them rather than buy new. I often have too many so happy to pass them on.

Bedding, some gets used until it falls apart then goes to charity for ragging, some gets sold if it is expensive stuff, and some goes on Freecycle.

Furniture items I get rid of if there is no room for everything, mostly given away.

sunshinesupermum · 09/06/2023 15:35

Household items only when needed. Clothes to boost my mood, although I know I have too many!

Onemyownhere · 09/06/2023 15:35

With the cost of living crisis I tend to try salvage what I got, if not I replace as and when needed but I make sure have warranty if i can

squashyhat · 09/06/2023 15:36

When they wear out/fade beyond recognition/become dangerous. I've just replaced a half-used bar of soap with a lovely new one bought on holiday and feel very guilty!

Ragwort · 09/06/2023 15:54

We bought fairly cheap sofas 22 years ago from MFI (remember them Grin) with the intention of replacing them when our DS grew out of the toddler stage - he's now 22 !
Its not about money ... we could afford to buy new ones but seems so much effort to choose what we want, responsibly get rid of the old ones etc .. easier just to stick with what we've got.

We moved into our current home 12 years ago .. the kitchen and appliances are the originals from when the house was built appropriately 20 years ago ... still perfectly functional.

SquashPenguin · 09/06/2023 16:00

I struggle to get rid of towels, I love a scratchy worn out towel 😆 Eventually they get relegated to the hair dye towels, then the DIY/ painting towels. Give me a scratchy old towel over a new fluffy one any day!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/06/2023 16:03

I wouldn't call a kettle or toaster decor, they're small kitchen appliances.

They get replaced when they wear out - when they're at the cheap end, that seems to coincide with a change in fashions, so it can look like it's been done for that reason when it's actually the old adage of buy cheap, buy multiple times.

The price of the toaster I last bought means it wants to last longer than any other one I've ever owned, though.

It all seems like so much hard work to replace stuff when you don't actually need to - I resent having to shop for stuff I've got no choice about, never mind actively wanting to put myself through it.

FrenchFancie · 09/06/2023 16:03

I’m a bit of both - we’ve just moved I to our own house so I need to buy some new things, but things like kettle / toaster etc get used until they break…

tiggergoesbounce · 09/06/2023 16:04

Normally, once they need replacing, but we are having a new kitchen fitted, so we are getting new appliances to match. We have had the old one's for a few years though so not too bad

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 09/06/2023 16:05

Only when broken or worn out. I always buy super high quality, pay more, but things last a long time and are always lovelyto use.

lljkk · 09/06/2023 16:06

Ecofreak here. We tend to keep things until non functional/ rags.

HeidiWhole · 09/06/2023 16:11

Only when they need replacing really. I'm amazed at the amount of people giving away or selling sofas on our local FB pages that are only a year or two old because they have got a new one.

When needed, we were one of the last to get rid of our big back tv and get a flatscreen.

It’s not due to finances I just hate shopping and have always been accidently environmentally friendly, I’m tight basically.

@AndYou

i still have my '2men to carry' Philips TV. He was given to me, second hand 13 years ago. Along with an under counter fridge that's now a drinks fridge. (It was my main frudge until covid hit & I wanted more frudge space)

@Woodward23 I don't replace things until I absolutely have to. I like my old familiar things & only rarely get the urge to replace something unnecessarily, but then I feel sad that the original would no longer feel wanted, so I don't replace it!

I'm as soft as shite!! Or as daft as a brush . Far too sentimental & assign feelings to objects. 🙄🙄. I get upset getting rid of things, even when they no longer work!

User15387534 · 09/06/2023 16:14

Usually when they break or get old and tatty, some things I buy when I don't need though like mugs if I see one I like so I have more of those than I need. Some household things that I have gone off are relegated to the touring caravan like towels, teatowels and mugs.

User15387534 · 09/06/2023 16:16

TVs do the rounds from downstairs to upstairs to the caravan but now they are getting bigger the 40" one upstairs won't fit in the caravan, we have the old 26" upstairs one in there at the moment and that's quite big.

Same here. We had neighbours laughing at it as it was so old fashioned and we said when it breaks we will replace it. It literally stopped working in front of our eyes and DH didn’t stop to check if it could be mended- he was straight out of the door to the shop for a flatscreen!

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 09/06/2023 16:19

When they break.

Like a pp I can't imagine just getting bored of something like a kettle.

BHRK · 09/06/2023 16:21

As needed. Might buy a new bedd if set every 4-5 years

Keitharingsbitch · 09/06/2023 16:21

In general when things need replacing. But I will buy new things which are decorative and functional like cushions or shower curtains if I fancy or as part of redecorating. In general though if it was something I needed once if like a shower curtain rtaher than cushions which you can just add to, I wouldn't buy just because.

User15387534 · 09/06/2023 16:23

DM used to make pillowcases out of the sheets where they hadn't gone thin, I couldn't imagine doing that but it was probably quite common to do that years ago

wwyd2021medicine · 09/06/2023 16:23

I often wonder this with mugs. Do folk just go and buy new matching sets when some break? I've got lots of different mugs, only a few have matching friends.

I donated a Denby dinner service to charity. I had used it over 20 years and was fed up of the sight of it. I was younger then though, doubt I'd do it these days as cba to choose stuff any more.

RoxyMuzak · 09/06/2023 16:26

We only buy new things if we really need them. We tend to think of buying things on a whim as 'wasting money'. We don't change phones, TV, etc, just because they are last year's model. Our smart TV is 10 years old. My phone is 2 years old, husband's is a little newer.

User15387534 · 09/06/2023 16:27

With mugs I try to keep to 2 styles rather than sets, Dunoon mugs and Emma Bridgewater mugs but I do have far more than I need, I can't resist a mug😁

Daisy62 · 09/06/2023 16:37

I mostly replace when needed. I stick to neutrals for furniture, floors and curtains/blinds. I make an exception for cushion covers and tea towels which I often buy and swap around quite a bit but I don’t throw out the previous ones if they’re ok - just put them away and get them out the next time I fancy a change. Or pass on to adult kids. Have mostly white china, so it all goes together and can get a different look with cheap flowers, candles, tablecloths etc.

illiterato · 09/06/2023 16:39

Appliances definitely only when they break. Towels and bedding when worn/ marked but towels get demoted from house to beach/ sport before they get sent to dog shelter. I have given away the kids bedding sets to the charity shop when the theme is outgrown- the guy said they sell v well. I do like ceramics so I am probably a bit more “circular” there ( vases/ big bowls etc) but I do give it all to the charity shop and I get the gift aid receipts so the stuff does sell.

i’m contemplating replacing the kitchen as everything is creaking- have to light hob with a match, top oven doesn’t heat evenly, dishwasher a bit temperamental- but I keep thinking if I can hang on a few more years then the next one might well see me out 🤣.
