New words for old things

I've just been looking at swimwear and spotted the 'monokini' on quite a few sites, which is .... wait for it....a swimsuit.

I mean... why? Is it supposed to sound more glamorous?

Any other new, irritating words to describe something which has had a perfectly good name for a long time?

I will add 'hack' or 'life hack'. It's just a tip to make something easier. Hack is for computers. Or chopping meat!

"Buying" is now "sourcing"

"Putting a load of things together so they look nice" is now "curating"

"Painting an old thing" is now "upcycling"

"Second-hand" is now "pre-loved" or "vintage"

"Homemade and a bit wonky" is now "artisanal"

I've talked on here before about how I think a lot of it is very much linked to social class. I got absolutely flamed for saying it but I stand firm. Middle-class people use these ridiculous words to try and distinguish what they do from what working-class people have done (have had to do) more centuries.

"Woman"

For years it was used to describe a woman.

Minor Attracted Person: paedophile
Sex: gender
Mother: birthing person
Breast feeding: chest feeding

PuttingDownRoots · 08/06/2023 10:10

Pleather is now Vegan Leather.

Now I'm sure there is properly developed plant based leather alternatives... but I don't think its the £10 supermarket school shoes (nothing against them as they are what some people can afford especially when kids grow faster than you can blink)

Inclusive = the same old sexist racist ablest misogynistic shit, but with rainbows and pronouns. Don’t expect any reasonable adjustments disabled people, inclusion doesn’t include you.

lesbian = straight man who says he’s a lesbian.

Queer = straight person with brightly coloured hair who wants to be all special and oppressed.

Gilead · 08/06/2023 10:23

Not quite the same but "Can't be arsed" has become "Can't be asked." (According to my kids who said I was saying it wrong).

Piqued interest has become peaked interest. Wrongly.

BrunchMonster · 08/06/2023 14:25

"Friendship groups" for friends.

reesewithoutaspoon · 08/06/2023 14:27

Play date. Going to your mates for tea

Nicflowers82 · 08/06/2023 14:29

“Your truth” is actually just your version of events. Why does no one say “my opinion” or “my version” or “my recollection” or “my story” anymore. Particularly in the media. V annoying .

Giggorata · 08/06/2023 17:28

People saying pissed, instead of pissed off.
Pissed in the UK means drunk.

This got me slightly confused when I started reading American crime novels. Its morning, the police shouldn't be drunk at that time! 😂

Forest bathing going for a walk in the woods
wild swimming having a dip in the sea or convenient river

Hallionflossie · 08/06/2023 17:39

’Reach out’ to someone instead of ‘contact’.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 08/06/2023 17:42

Painting your back bedroom is now 'refreshing' it.

Also, 'get your glow up' i.e. cut down on the gin and comb your hair.

NotBasically · 08/06/2023 17:59

Transvestites (aka trannies) are now transwomen 🙄

Shinyandnew1 · 08/06/2023 18:03

BlueThursday · 08/06/2023 18:07

Invite now appears to be a noun rather than a verb

PoseyFlump · 08/06/2023 18:09

Curated. Everything now is curated.

We used to just put things together or arrange them or organise them. But no, even shopping lists will soon be curated!
