New words for old things

I've just been looking at swimwear and spotted the 'monokini' on quite a few sites, which is .... wait for it....a swimsuit.

I mean... why? Is it supposed to sound more glamorous?

Any other new, irritating words to describe something which has had a perfectly good name for a long time?

Instead of just "with", things are now "paired with".

Usually clothes-related on S&B, but someone was talking about "pairing" fish fingers with baked potato instead of waffles on AIBU earlier.

“Your truth” is actually just your version of events. Why does no one say “my opinion” or “my version” or “my recollection” or “my story” anymore. Particularly in the media. V annoying .

I was just saying this yesterday! "My truth" is utter bullshit to make your side of the story sound more weighty. The truth is not an owned thing; its incontrovertible.

The absurd elevation of job titles which makes it impossible to discern the nature of very simple roles.

Sanitation manager - toilet cleaner
Executive PA - secretary
Horticultural landscaper - gardener
Loss prevention officer - security guard
Waste removal engineer - binman
Customer experience executive - call centre staff

Etc

Another good one is what was "personnel" then became "hr" now I know someone who is "head of people".

CheeseDreamsTonight · 08/06/2023 22:03

My daughter and friends say 'can you search up' instead of 'look it up'

excelledyourself · 08/06/2023 22:04

And things are 'swapped out' now too

ilovepixie · 08/06/2023 22:41

Curtain bangs for a fringe parted in the middle!

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 08/06/2023 22:42

'Back story' = what happened yesterday is now your 'back story'.

'Iconic' = anything that more than two people can pick out in a crowd is 'iconic'.

'Instagrammable' - two rocket leaves and a skid mark of balsamic on a square plate.

'My aesthetic' = the way you wear your clothes.

'Due diligence' = seeing how many stars your leggings got before ordering a pair.

Edit - as in ‘shop the summer edit’.
Hack - top tip or just how stuff works.

I saw on another thread that "staycation" in the UK often means that you leave your home but the "stay" part means you stay in the UK. I find this funny. As an American (and the term is American in origin), I take the term to mean you stay at home, do day trips, watch movies, play games, etc. I can go from my home in the eastern US to Hawaii and still be in my own country, but I don't think that would count as a staycation.

A staycation used to mean that you stayed in your own home but went on day trips etc. To say that staying in the U.K. is a staycation is so insulting. It infers that it’s not a holiday and that all the people who holiday in the U.K. for whatever reason aren’t really on holiday.

Inclusive = the same old sexist racist ablest misogynistic shit, but with rainbows and pronouns. Don’t expect any reasonable adjustments disabled people, inclusion doesn’t include you.

lesbian = straight man who says he’s a lesbian.

Queer = straight person with brightly coloured hair who wants to be all special and oppressed.

A great post x

wildinthecountry · 08/06/2023 22:54

Like one I saw a while ago that was a 'top hack' emptying the tray under the toaster or the other 'hack' was take out the 'draw' of your w/m to clean it Hmm .

wildinthecountry · 08/06/2023 20:03

"Stuffing" . Taking money out of the bank and putting it into special envelopes for electric, groceries , or phone . No one has done this in the past no one ever , this is a new idea Hmm

What? Like we used to do in the past?

I remember seeing a Facebook ad for ‘washable, reusable face wipes’. They were like single use wipes but reusable. You put make up remover on them. All the comments were people pointing out that this was just a flannel.

BittenontheBum · 08/06/2023 23:02

@PriamFarrl unless you have a fabulous friend like mine who can crochet small round face pads that are washable. Not as big and heavy as a flannel, beautifully made. She makes two slightly different textures (different yarn) for them, cleansing and toning. Such a lovely wee gift 💜

CharlieKat · 08/06/2023 23:02

"iconic" - makes me want to set my hair on fire

"Lived experience" wtf is this I don't know. Is there a way to experience things when not living?

"Woman" see above

'Colleague' or 'workmate' has become 'work colleague. Infuriating.

Coworker is even more infuriating!

2X4B523P · 08/06/2023 23:10

A wireless now being called a transistor radio.

Emmerdale farm now just Emmerdale, what’s next Coronation street just Coronation?

Snowtrails · 08/06/2023 23:12

Movie, cotton candy, candy, sneakers,

FannyFanackerpan · 08/06/2023 23:12

'Tragic' has been extended to cover anything sad. I even heard it used to describe the death of the Queen Mother. She was in her 90s and died peacefully!

I think she was 102. Thé current King claimed it was a terrible shock.

MerryMarigold · 08/06/2023 14:12

Not quite the same but "Can't be arsed" has become "Can't be asked." (According to my kids who said I was saying it wrong).

I always used to think "Can't be asked" was correct, and it made sense to me, i.e. "Don't ask me to do that, because I can't be bothered." As for "Can't be arsed," how on earth does that mean anything?

watcherintherye · 08/06/2023 23:03

Coworker is even more infuriating!

I always read the word cow first and then have to re-read the word!

It's not a new word but the word nourish really irks me, particularly when it's not talking about food (eg nourishing your soul)

'Did a haul' for shopping makes my skin crawl

Honestly can't get over these lassies that unpack their Asda shop (sorry, haul) as an Instagram story.

Snowtrails · 08/06/2023 23:16

Stroller - what's wrong with buggy or pushchair?

Yes, absolutely this. Losing anyone can be tragic for those left behind, but the death of an elderly person who has had a good life is not tragic in itself. Death of young people, violent deaths, traumatic lives - these are the tragic things.
