New words for old things

I've just been looking at swimwear and spotted the 'monokini' on quite a few sites, which is .... wait for it....a swimsuit.

I mean... why? Is it supposed to sound more glamorous?

Any other new, irritating words to describe something which has had a perfectly good name for a long time?

Don’t feel safe = you are telling me facts

WizardinTraining · 09/06/2023 08:06

I love some of these especially the plate with a skid mark 😂

’My truth’ has always wound me up because truth just is, it’s not something that can be owned.

stingypeasant · 09/06/2023 08:14

I always thought a Monokini was a bikini where they two parts were attached but not as in a full swimsuit.

Another good one is what was "personnel" then became "hr" now I know someone who is "head of people"

I’ve seen, with my very own eyes*, a desk labelled ‘Director of First Impressions’. For a receptionist.

(*it’s my truth, in other words)

People sitting exams are no longer supervised lor watched; they are invigilated.

I did my GCSE,s in 1990 we had invigilators
For me it's transitioning( and I'm not taking about transexuals) kids don't just move up.to high school they transition ,and they transition between classe,s they don't move .

Curtain bangs for a fringe parted in the middle!

Is that not an American, term ,I was a,lover of American teen fiction when I was a teen there were lots of phrases that left me flummoxed, but I did eventually work out That when kids had their Bangs cut they were having their fringe cut

I remember reading a Pan Horizon book (Forever?) and them talking about Q-tips. I had no idea what they were!

"Woman"

For years it was used to describe a woman.

👏👏👏

Ooh yes, I hate these 'new' words, and anyone who uses them is a tosser:
'hack' - you mean some tip or household hint you saw on social media, that most normal people have grown up knowing about
'source' is one that really pisses me off - you BOUGHT something (easily available to the general public), you did not charter an expedition to the jungle like Indiana Jones to find this rare treasure
'vegan leather' - yes, we used to call that plastic, it's still crap for bags and shoes
'movies' - fine if you live in the US or are American
'flipping', 'stuffing' etc etc just stop it!
It's all pathetic and makes the user look and sound like an idiot who is blindly parroting words they come across on social media (as with the word 'literally' used by one and all in a completely wrong way).

it was always invigilated when I took my O Levels way back in the 1980s 😊

"safe spaces" on- line or "safe spaces" in real life that have nothing to do with actually being safe from harm

Haven't read all pages so sorry if they've been said:

Mac 'n' cheese for macaroni cheese - recent American import??

I notice that modern Americans use 'purposefully' where I would say 'purposely' or, more likely, 'on purpose'. To me the word 'purposefully' has a bit different meaning, but I think it's moved over to the UK.

I am not particularly anti-American at all and some of their words are Olde English but I think these two have come over The Pond in an easterly direction.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 09/06/2023 14:29

pinkie for little finger

"Pinkie" is a Scots word that means "little." It's an old word, still used in Scotland and imported to the US by Scots settlers.

AmyDudley · 09/06/2023 14:44

I was at school over 50 years ago - our exams were invigilated. It is more than simple supervision.

I've heard 'graduation' used to describe children finishing nursery school . Also 'prom' for end of Primary school disco.

Also special words and phrases to describe what people have been doing with their babies for years - 'tummy time' springs to mind.

And of course the ubiquitous 'narcissist' for 'git'.

Vegan leather has reminded me- "plant based"
So, like lettuce and carrots etc.
Or, vegetarian if it's a whole dish made from plants.

This made me LOL recently: 'demi sexual' as a sexual orientation = a person who only becomes sexually attracted to another after forming an emotional connection.
