Why don't some people age?

Heytheredeliah · 07/06/2023 21:08

I often notice people who do not age very much at all.

They still look 20 at the age of 30. Why don't they age?

I don't smoke, drink around 2 glasses of wine a year, eat ok, exercise, worn factor 50+ on my face everyday for years, but I can still me my face and skin aging. I don't know what is causing it.

Does anyone know any tips to stop aging or slow if down?

The difference between late 20s and early thirties is staggering. I think something happens around mid thirties as it does around 50 . These were the ages I noticed a lot of change .

Kids, for most people. What happened for me was having two children- had DD2 at 33. Then had the copper coil fitted, and in the next few years had a cervical cancer scare and minor treatment, endometriosis & surgery for that, loads of work stress, depression and took a career break but then still found it full on with small children when I went back. Now having older children (teens still cause stress but it's not quite the same as the physical demands of young children) and having sorted my hormones, diet, work and exercise out I feel far better at 47, even approaching menopause, than I did at 37 when I was exhausted and ill and had lost my mojo, and looking back at photos from ten years ago I much prefer how I look now and feel so much more confident.

Its entirely genetic. I am 70, look much younger than many comtemporaries and have lived the totally unhealthy lifestyle of the boomer generation - booze, drugs, loads of sunbathing and am a mum to boot. Also I don't drink water - unless it has hops in it. I have moisturised every day since my teens, but only ordinary skin cream once a day.

Everybody ages - apart from Heather Graham - god knows what she's doing but we're the same age and I look like her mother!

She doesn't have any children, I believe. So this kind of proves what other posters say about that being a factor.

BlueAndGreenStripes · 08/06/2023 10:32

I think everyone just ages at different rates. I looked very young for my age until my mid 30s, now I’m mid 40s and I think I look a lot older than I actually am.

Catspyjamas17 · 08/06/2023 10:35

Weight as well is a factor and where you carry it. Then being too thin can also be ageing, especially with poor muscle tone, it just looks like you've been sat on and the air has gone out of you.

rainbowlanyardsupmybumbum · 08/06/2023 10:38

I pay great attention to what I put on my face and ensure I get fresh raw fruits and vegetables in myself as often as possible. I naturally drink a lot of water because of thirst. I use hemp oil and glycerin on my face and I have few wrinkles at 41. People always say I look younger, it's something I've focused on for two decades. I drink and smoke a fair bit too.

I use new products like retinol and things too, dark spot eradicators, try new products when I can afford to. Having bushy eyebrows keeps you looking young also.

If you follow some insta pages and look things up and keep your ear to the ground you will pick things up.

Yes, she really does look fantastic!

Everybody ages. You are not one second younger than the moment you are right now.

You need to think about internals as well, it's not just about appearance. Plenty of people die younger because of disease.

Sure I'd like to have 20 year old skin again, but I can look better if I pay more attention to it. It is what it is!

We all age but chronological age and biological age can differ fairly significantly. And while chronological age just keeps going forward we can reverse our biological age. Obviously that has it's limits, we can't turn back time indefinitely. But we can do things that increase our healthy longevity. If we were less healthy before, adapting better habits can reduce our biological age. There is also a very strong correlation between looking young for your age and healthy lifespan. People who look young for their age, do generally live longer as they are in fact ageing more slowly.

Melanin and Palmer's Cocoa Butter. Source: Jamaican mum and aunties. My great aunt is still alive at 95 and obviously she looks like an old lady, but she doesn't look 95.

Redkettle · 08/06/2023 12:47

I looked young till menopause at 42 . Then wallop. My bone structure didn't help. Got cheek fillers to hoist me uo a bit. I have no wrinkles just had skin that slid off my face

It all catches up with you at menopause. Suddenly everything heads south.

I am post menopausal and still look ten years younger than I am. My mum always looked youthful. It is down to good genes!

DontBeBitterGlitter2023 · 08/06/2023 13:04

I'm 37 and still get asked for ID in the supermarket... I think in my case I do have good genetics as nobody in my family looks their age.

Oh and the work helps 🙃(Botox, liquid rhinoplasty, Profhilo and a boob job...)

thecatsthecats · 08/06/2023 13:05

My grandad gave us the fountain of youth genes. He was asked by strangers at 80 when he was nearing retirement age he'd understand their issues.

I've never had a baby face and haven't really been IDd since I was fifteen, however the genes are bearing out now - there's a slight but noticeable difference between me and my peers.

I don't have a skincare regime apart from suncream. My skin isn't especially great - it's just very resilient.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 08/06/2023 13:16

I am or was one of these annoying people! In early 50s and regularly get early to mid 30s. My DM and her DM and also her DF (grandparents) also looked a lot younger and smoked and drank, my DM did same but stopped smoking at 30 and drinking mid 50s.

DM swore by Nivea in blue pot but she also sunbathed without protection in her teens. Her DM always used sun protection and swore by ponds cold cream. I use a fairly cheap moisturiser and sunscreen (spf50) and retinol and it’s only in past 2 years I’ve noticed 11s and sagging near jaw line. I’ve got another friend same age but she’s size 18-20 and both her and her DM have amazing skin with hardly any wrinkles. She doesn’t do much to her skin either.

Hate to say it but if you mess around with fillers, Botox etc in my personal opinion as they’re unknown as to what they can do to skin then you’re more likely to take risks by fiddling with it.

My SIL is always using face wipes (eg not cleanse and tone) and I’ve told her more than once it’s not great for her skin.

pinkpirlie · 08/06/2023 17:18

I think genetics, lifestyle, sleep, water, etc.

I'm 40 and hardly have any wrinkles at all.

I drink soooo much water (3+ ltrs a day) and I sleep 9-10 hours a night.

I hardly use any products on my face at all, never have (wash with water, don't moisturise except on the rare occasion I put on foundation), never have I taken makeup off before I go to sleep but I don't wear makeup on a daily basis. I'm lucky I've never any had skin issues except an odd hormonal spot.

I do wear 50+ SPF sunscreen in summer and on sunny days.

It’s genetics combined with good skin care and good cheek bones.

Mojoj · 08/06/2023 17:22

Good genetics play a huge part. As does Botox....🤣🤣🤣🤣

That is starting to happen to me. I am peri menopause and starting to see little difference now in my face around the eyes. I am fascinated at the ageing process in what it does to you socially and how others view you.

I have never used anything in my face, just wash it with water, no filler and no botox. It's genetics, my Dad has just a few deep lines.

I think you are correct. I hardly wear make-up. All those chemicals and that tugging at the skin when applying and removing make-up can't do your skin any good. I just wash my face in water and leave it alone.

I think it must be genes. I'm 31 and people think I'm early 20s. Some people think my 9 year old is my sister! I don't believe it's due to less stress as I've had a lot of stress in my life, but I admit I do look tired half the time. I've had some people from school say I look exactly the same as I did when I left school just my hair is double length now.

Haribosweets · 10/06/2023 07:03

I'm one of these people - 44 but look late 20s. No grey at all. I need to lose a few stone though! When I started a new job few years back someone thought I was 21!
I have a lot of stress in my life, anxiety, autistic child, disabled parents, work full time so I consider myself lucky. But I often say I wonder why I'm not grey!

pilates · 10/06/2023 07:07

Genetics and lifestyle.

JonahAndTheSnail · 10/06/2023 08:32

I don't have wrinkles at almost 40, but do have a few faint lines around my eyes, my pores are also bigger than they were in my 20s. I do still regularly get hormonal spots on my chin, so it's not all good. I look forward to the menopause when I'll most likely have both wrinkles and spots!

In my case, I think keeping out of the sun has helped a lot. I've never really sunbathed or gone on that type of holiday. I did smoke like a chimney in my teens and twenties and have always enjoyed a drink.
