Why don't some people age?

Heytheredeliah · 07/06/2023 21:08

I often notice people who do not age very much at all.

They still look 20 at the age of 30. Why don't they age?

I don't smoke, drink around 2 glasses of wine a year, eat ok, exercise, worn factor 50+ on my face everyday for years, but I can still me my face and skin aging. I don't know what is causing it.

Does anyone know any tips to stop aging or slow if down?

Botox and filler. I love the stuff. Not too much, but it helps. Lots of water, plenty of veggies and not so much stress.
My auntie is 13 months younger than my mum. She always worked in a professional job. Both wear little to no make up. No hair dye or botox. Both early 70s. My mum hasn't worked since 1981. My mum looks younger by at least 5 years. It also helps that her hair has very little grey naturally, but I swearbits because she was a SAHM and then housewife.

Quite easy to touch photos up though for insta!

Sure, but I don't think so here.

shivawn · 07/06/2023 21:32

I think quite a lot of people look extremely similar at 30 to how they did at 20. Once you get past the early 30's age becomes more obvious.

GarlicGrace · 07/06/2023 21:33

Some people don't age because they die young.

That's the only way to avoid it, tbh.

Some people have thicker skin, more sebum, more collagen and/or the kind of crag-like bone structure that makes you look older while you're young, but holds your skin up nicely as you age. Genetics, not magic or moisturiser.

Even with all that, a person's appearance ages the longer they stay alive. Not being dead is a relatively good thing, I should think?!

Indoorcatmum · 07/06/2023 21:36

Some people are deliberately misunderstanding you.

It's mostly genetics, but tretinoin, staying out of the sun and a subtle botox regime works miracles.
Starting botox at 30, just a little bit on the main areas will massively slow down your aging, tretinoin will help with the texture and fine lines.

Most other skincare does sweet F all.

I’m one of those who looked much younger but perimenopause had meant I’ve aged very quickly. I still don’t quite look my age but I’ve gained decades in a couple of years so expect to exceed my age in looks within the next couple of years

msmonstera · 07/06/2023 21:43

Genetics combined with lifestyle. I (redhead) think I have the MC1R gene, the apparent 'youth' gene that can go with it. I'm 40 and depending on clothes etc look late 20s (this has caused issues at work).
Kids really rapidly age people. Smokers also look older than they are, as do those who eat predominantly rubbish. I also think the natural delicate blondes who peaked in school years tend to fade very quickly.

I have a yoga teacher who must be around 50 who looks about 30. I believe she is wealthy though, leads a very healthy stress-free life and I suspect has had a tinge of Botox too.
Remember ageing is a privilege though; everyone has lost someone far too young.

crabbyoldappletree · 07/06/2023 21:44

We all age, unless you have a self portrait sitting in the attic!

Well obviously I know that the passing of time causes aging but I seem to be aging quicker and I don't know how to slow it down. I really want my 20 year old skin back.

Don’t we all, my dear! I do understand it’s a shock to see yourself age, when at 20 you felt it would last forever. But honestly, if you are wise, over the years, what you trade in losing your good skin, you gain in giving less fucks about how you look or what others think, and more invested in making yourself genuinely happy.

Imagine yourself on your deathbed (which of course could be today or any day), will you be thinking ‘I’m so glad I put Botox (or whatever) in my skin and had less lines’ or do you want to be thinking ‘I’m so glad I learned to accept the unpleasantries of life in a way that let me live a happy and contented life’. I know others may disagree about priorities but I know what I’d pick. How many years for the rest of your life (if you are lucky to live long) do you want to spend doing invasive things to your face and body? You need to learn how to make yourself happy within your own mind. I’ll get off my (old and aged) soapbox now ;)

I look 10-15 years than my 39 years
people are often gobsmacked when I tell them my age
it’s genetics from my dad - he’s 70 yet looks around 55

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 07/06/2023 21:48

I think it’s genetics. I’m 40 and frequently get mistaken for quite a bit younger. But my mum looks younger than her age as well. I also think being petite can give the impression of youthfulness (none of the women in my family are over 5’3”!)
I don’t think aging should be seen as a negative though.

BarelyLiterate · 07/06/2023 21:48

For the same reason as some people are short, or tall, or dark haired or blue eyed or left handed etc etc. Genetics.

Choose your parents carefully.

JaninaDuszejko · 07/06/2023 21:49

I have a portrait in the attic.

It all catches up with you at menopause. Suddenly everything heads south.

This! I have rapidly aged after getting away with looking younger for years.

TooJoy · 07/06/2023 21:53

I’m early 30s but look early 20s and still get ID’d.
I wouldn’t like to look older than my age but it’s not necessarily a good thing to look younger than your age.

I have never used face creams, hardly ever used sun cream, smoked for years, drank way too much alcohol etc etc so I think it is just to do with genes and luck.

My body/skin is not the same as 10 years ago though.

I don’t have wrinkles but I am more hairy than I used to be.
I’ve also started getting smelly boob sweat that I never had before and I think I generally smell more than I used to.
I have random black hairs on my chin which seem to appear overnight.
My knees are not as strong as they once were.
My hair isn’t as thick.
I am not as flexible.

So your skin may not look as young as mine but you may be luckier than me in many others ways.

I wonder if you have developed a hormonal issue like PCOS?

ashamed1235 · 07/06/2023 22:01

i think it’s a combination of genetics and lifestyle. My mum looked very young in her forties and into her late fifties but now in her seventies she looks her age facially, albeit her youthful attitude and bounciness make her appear younger.

I had my children in my mid thirties and a combination of sleep deprivation and too much wine meant I looked rough for a few years. Now the kids are older and I no longer drink and exercise regularly, I look younger again and probably pass for late 30s not late 40s. No make up and no surgery or fillers but I do wear sunscreen and a hat. However, I fully expect it to catch up with me soon.

LobeliaSackville · 07/06/2023 22:01

People with thicker and oilier skin tend to age better. Thin Caucasian skin tends to wrinkle more at an earlier age, and I've noticed this More on pale blondes and redheads. More expressive faces wrinkle more as well.

I don't have a very expressive face and I don't have any crows feet in my mid thirties. I don't have many wrinkles at all and people usually think I'm 10 years younger than I am. However, in the past year or two I've noticed the skin on my neck becoming a little bit looser. It looks like I'll develop a turkey neck like my mother and grandmother if I don't get a neck lift!

TeenLifeMum · 07/06/2023 22:03

I always thought my mum’s lines round her mouth were because she smoked. Now I have the lines. I feel cheated. I’ve never smoked. I plan to have Botox at some point if I’m unhappy. I’m 41 but have a few friends in their early 50s and they look fab! (Due to subtle Botox)

Tessisme · 07/06/2023 22:07

There is a woman who lives in my mum's street and I have known her since I was tiny. She's in her late seventies and I have never in my life met anyone who looks so much younger than her age. She could pass for sixty. She doesn't wear make up and has always had her hair short and neat. She's really petite - probably about 4ft 10" or so and very slim. Barely a wrinkle. Even her voice sounds young! And she moves like a much younger person. Her daughter is late fifties and they could easily pass for sisters. The daughter didn't inherit her youthful appearance - she looks great, but looks her age (which of course is fine!)

JandalsAlways · 07/06/2023 22:10

Genes and ethnicity have a lot to do with it!

Tormundsbeard · 07/06/2023 22:12

Drinking two litres of water a day really does help I think. Being dehydrated is not good for your skin.

Maztek · 07/06/2023 22:13

Genes. I smoke, drink, eat like crap, don’t moisturise. I still get ID’d in shops and told I don’t look old enough to have my kids (which I find really offensive!)

Luckily the two people who decided to bone and create me have really really good skin and hair and have passed that on to me.

Newusernameforthiss · 07/06/2023 22:21

Genetics
Having children (I have twins and lots of child-free/childless friends... No kids takes ten years off your age easily)
Body fat (as the French say, at 30 you have to choose between your fave and your arse... If you have more fat all over your face will look less wrinkly)
Booze (I do dry January and my skin is so much better at the end(

Honestly I'd have more than two glasses of wine a year 🤷🏻‍♀️ it's what's on the inside that counts!

LouLou198 · 07/06/2023 22:22

Good genes and carrying a bit of extra weight! I have both Grin
