Why don't some people age?

I often notice people who do not age very much at all.

They still look 20 at the age of 30. Why don't they age?

I don't smoke, drink around 2 glasses of wine a year, eat ok, exercise, worn factor 50+ on my face everyday for years, but I can still me my face and skin aging. I don't know what is causing it.

Does anyone know any tips to stop aging or slow if down?

Keep active and wear sunscreen when out helps. Also watching your weight.

caringcarer · 07/06/2023 22:28

I went to a school anniversary after leaving for 25 years. Most people had aged reasonably well I thought. A few looked much older but I noticed one of the males looked just like he did when we were at school. I couldn't believe it. It turned out he had no kids so got plenty of sleep and time to suit himself. It kind of made sense then.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 07/06/2023 22:29

Genes, bone structure and as they get older botox.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 07/06/2023 22:30

Keeping your portrait in the attic helps apparently.

blueshoes · 07/06/2023 22:33

Not sure about carrying extra weight. Weight gain makes me look frumpy and old.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 07/06/2023 22:34

I read on here once that a 50 year old woman can look really good for her age, but she will still look 50.

As someone who always looked very young for my age (genuinely, I have never lived 'cleanly' so it must be genetics), I totally agree.

At 40 I was asked for id several times, people commenting on me not looking my age, to turning 42, and now mid forties, and the wrinkles are appearing, the start of jowls... nobody asks for id any more!

Don't let aging get to you. It is what it is and better than the alternative. It will catch up with us all eventually.

OP, this is MN, so this thread will be flooded with people insisting they're mistaken for their child's twin sibling, ID'd to buy fireworks at the age of 65, and have a nan who used nothing but bin juice on her face and still didn't look a day over 21 when she died in her 90s.

Nellynoo182 · 07/06/2023 22:46

Not saying this is the reason for everyone but I am amazed at how many people are having Botox earlier now too! I am in my late twenties and would say 80% of my friends have started getting it. Many of them actually look younger every time I see them now 🤣 unfortunately being needle phobic I will have to accept the wrinkles!

Retinols/tretinoin/botox//fillers. Simple.

Joeylove88 · 07/06/2023 22:57

I am 34 and iv always been told how young I look. The usual answer Is that I look 21 or 25 but I once had a lady tell me she thought I was only 16 😂 (I was 32 at the time). Since having a baby I do feel aged in the face a bit but I think it's natural to. I use creams now to keep my skin feeling fresh and don't usually wear make up but iv never put make up on every day anyway. I also do have a small patch of grey hair coming through now which I hate so I will need to get that dyed back to brown ASAP. I think girls the same age as me just look so pretty and youthful even if I'm still mistaken for a 22 year old! The drinking water thing is really important as well and I definitely don't drink enough of it at the moment.

PhoenixIsFlying · 07/06/2023 22:58

I think it is genetics. I don't have many wrinkles and no grey hair and am nearly 50. However, I feel old as I have arthritis and other things. I have never used face creams and just wash my face with soap and water.

This is really depressing :(

Gosh no, i'd say she looks mid/late 30's!

EmmiJay · 07/06/2023 23:02

Black doesn't crack in my case😅 My skin has been moisturised from the day I was born, plus really good genes. My mam doesn't look anywhere near her age. The same goes for dad now I really think about it. I don't drink, but I do smoke and eat crap. I'll cut all that out when I hit 40 and need to "prep" for perimenopause!

restingwitchplace · 07/06/2023 23:04

I look young for 40, most people think I’m 30, some guess younger still. I’m sure it’s genetics, I’m fair with dry skin but moisturise a ton, never smoked, I don’t eat clean or anything like that although don’t live/eat/drink badly. It’s likely genes from my dad, because my half sisters didn’t look as young. I look back at photos of me at 25 and 30 and I looked a lot like a teen.

That said, I have started to notice small changes to my body (cellulite popped up in the last couple of years, neck looking marginally less youthful, a grey hair that’s popped up) but I’m lucky to have made it this far without lines or any notable physical changes. My luck will run out soon enough, I’m sure!

GarlicGrace · 07/06/2023 23:05

Drinking lots of water makes your skin look better now but does fuck all long term.

You can fake a certain amount with treatments & procedures - but you will either have to stop that & get on with ageing at some point, or end up looking slightly non-human.

I quite surprised myself recently, when I answered to a survey that I think media should be compelled to state when a photo has been enhanced. I'm ex-advertising and pro media freedoms, I mostly think lying embellishment is all part of the fun! But it does concern me that so many of the images we see now have been altered, it gives people warped expectations in real life.

LodiDodi · 07/06/2023 23:07

Everyone ages but it's just more apparent on some than others. If you're talking about their skin, outside of diet and sun protection, stress and sleep have huge effects. Those who haven't had children or have fewer children or a bigger income generally look younger because there's usually less stress and more quality sleep for them.

Some of us genuinely look young for our age.
There are previous threads discussing how frustrating it can be for us.

You obviously don’t look young for your age which isn’t something to be ashamed about but being bitter about it isn’t helping.

AndYou · 07/06/2023 23:15

Genetics mainly, I looked very young till I hit menopause then I did get a few lines. But honestly as much as avoiding the sun, not smoking, good food, plenty of sleep, none or hardly any booze will help it’s mainly genetics.

Luciey · 07/06/2023 23:16

Genetics, good sunscreen regime starting in youth, good diet limiting glucose spikes.

Also getting Botox before the wrinkles "set in".

JamSandle · 07/06/2023 23:17

I think a lot is genes and low stress. Of course a good lifestyle helps. Everyone ages eventually though. Some people just seem to do it slower.

JamSandle · 07/06/2023 23:18

Agree with those whove said people.without kids generally seem to age slower. Kids seem to be the thing that really ramps up the aging process. Probably the lack of sleep.

otherwayup · 07/06/2023 23:19

blueshoes · 07/06/2023 21:12

It all catches up with you at menopause. Suddenly everything heads south.

Not necessarily and I'm so fed up of this being trotted out!!

I look pretty good for 52 and don't feel like anything is 'catching up with me' I had a hysterectomy in my early 40s so definitely menopausal for many years!

I'm blessed genetically it would seem as my family is full of women who don't seem to get wrinkles etc as they age and I'm also extremely careful about what I eat etc
I'm also half Spanish so maybe that is another reason I'm mistaken for someone much younger?

This is also true. A lot of people talk of baby botox and start young.
