Wearing pjs to hang washing outside

pjswashingline · 03/06/2023 07:52

I'm just waiting on the washing machine to finish and then I will hand it outside. I am in pjs and will not get changed prior to going outside. We have neighbours at either side so I can be seen but I think it's perfectly acceptable to be out in nightwear. I just wondered if others get changed first?

I put the bin out in PJ's and wellies the other day. I'm sure the neighbours were scandalised!

There are pj's and there are pj's. Do you mean checked/patterned trousers with a t-shirt type of pj's?

Get away, there is no 'pyjamas in your own garden' etiquette. I'll be out there in a short nightshirt as soon as the washer's finished - feast your eyes, neighbourinos.

StrugglingWeight · 03/06/2023 08:30

Of course it's okay. I wear pjs to hang the washing, put the bins out, go to the car. It's my garden. I'm not flashing anyone, if the neighbours don't like it that sounds like a them problem

I mentioned once that I was downstairs in my pjs- can't remember what I was talking about and they were completely shocked. They all get changed first.

Same when I said I'd caught up on a TV episode whilst I had the house to myself. They were literally shocked.

I must be scum in their eyes!

DiscoBeat · 03/06/2023 08:33

I do it but no one can see me. If they could I probably still would!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 03/06/2023 08:35

I live in my pj’s when not at work so I’m often in the garden wearing them. I
am slovenly but I like to be comfortable🤷‍♀️

I’ll go to my car on the driveway in my pj’s too but I draw the line at going further.

Dcat has claimed next door’s front garden as her new favourite spot and I have to send dh to check if she is there as I would feel uncomfortable to be on the pavement in my pj’s and crocs🫣

whitesnowflake · 03/06/2023 08:37

I hang washing out in my PJs and take the bins out. I'd rather take bins out before I get showered and dressed for work. I don't see an issue at all. But thinking about it don't think I've ever seen any of my neighbours take the bins out in theirs PJs.

Keitharingsbitch · 03/06/2023 08:40

I wouldn't even think of getting changed. Of course it is fine.

Not a chance I'd go downstairs in my dressing gown. Let alone into the garden in my nightie, without underwear.

We are not overlooked, but I still wouldn't do it.

I do wear yesterday's dress or trousers, wash my face and brush my teeth and then have a shower mid to late morning when my jobs are done though.

You wouldn’t go downstairs in your PJs? Seriously? Why not?

pjswashingline · 03/06/2023 08:50

I have never seen my neighbours in pjs either! I stay in mine until all the house jobs are done then shower. Generally it's just hanging washing or putting rubbish in the bins.

I have also answered the door to the postman wearing my pjs, he never looks fazed.

I have learned 2 things from my neighbours:

  1. They never ever go downstairs in pjs.
  1. They cannot fathom anyone watching TV in the daytime.

I have not found my tribe.

This sounds like my ex MIL

Who also one day asked me " what do you mean you are doing roast chicken ? I see Yorkshire pudding in the oven so it must be beef "

So glad to see the back of her

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 03/06/2023 08:53

I never shower or dress for the day until I've done all the housework - and that definitely involves doing the laundry in my pants sometimes Grin

RosesAndHellebores · 03/06/2023 08:56

@User19844666884 because I was brought up not to. If you are well enough to go downstairs you are well enough to get dressed. Work mornings, get up, shower, dress, hair, make-up. Weekend mornings: get up, wash face and hands, pull on some scruffs - trousers and top. Get jobs done and have a leisurely shower or bubble bath before going out.

DH usually brings me a cup of tea but pulls on some trousers and a polo shirt before going downstairs.

How does this work if you wake up in the night and need a glass of water? Or want to bring a cuppa back to bed in the mornings to read?

VenusClapTrap · 03/06/2023 08:57

Your own garden = anything goes.

LaPerduta · 03/06/2023 08:58

BriarHare · 03/06/2023 07:57

I don’t wear pjs, but I did drive to the station last night to collect my husband, wearing just my dressing gown and his sliders. 😆

That sounds potentially quite dangerous. Flip flops or sliders aren't the best for driving (although not illegal per se), and presumably your husband's are also on the large side making them even less safe.

IglesiasPiggl · 03/06/2023 08:59

I nearly always do an overnight wash so peg out first thing in the morning. I wouldn't dream of getting dressed beforehand because it's not convenient - like others I do all the jobs before showering. My pj's aren't revealing in any way though, and neighbours both sides tend to get up much later so I doubt they've even noticed.

VenusClapTrap · 03/06/2023 08:59

Actually it’s one of life’s simple pleasures; walking round the garden first thing on a morning in your pyjamas with a cup of tea, seeing what’s blooming today.

Matildahoney · 03/06/2023 09:01

In this weather the neighbours are lucky I'm wearing a bikini, once I'm sunbathing though it comes off.
DP does the gardening in his Calvin's so he can top up his tan.
I think our neighbours would be pleased with PJ's!

RosesAndHellebores · 03/06/2023 09:01

@CountZacular I take a glass of water up to bed with me. Once I'm up I don't go back to bed.

AtomicBlondeRose · 03/06/2023 09:02

I do this. However on the neighbour front I don’t know because I’ve never ever seen them hang anything in their (big, sunny) back garden. We’re prolific washing-hangers from the very first moment of the year that it’s possible and I thought we’d inspired them when a brand-new, expensive rotary washing line appeared in their garden. But no! It’s never been used. Sometimes when I have a lot of washing to hang I wish I could nip over and use that one too.

dementedpixie · 03/06/2023 09:04

I'm on the couch in my pj's and when my washing has finished I'll go and hang it out while still wearing them.

PumpkinSpiceLattePlease · 03/06/2023 09:05

Oh to live in an area where some one would think twice about something like this! I see dressing gowns and slippers on the school run, in Tesco, mums wearing bikinis on the school run, shirtless men swaggering down the street sipping a can of Stella......

hettiethehare · 03/06/2023 09:05

I don’t, but I am middle aged and large of nork, so no one needs to see me without a bra on.

Doggymummar · 03/06/2023 09:05

I live in my pjs so no problem here. I am mowing later and will put my wellies on over them.
