How often do you wash your duvet?

As summer approaches, drying a duvet becomes easier. I'm curious about how frequently you wash your duvet in the summer. Do you find yourself doing it less often in the winter? Also, how do you manage to dry your duvet during the winter months?

I air mine on breezy sunny days, and it goes to a launderette that does duvet washes at the end of the season before I vacuum pack it away and swap for the winter/summer. I've never washed it myself as I don't think they dry well without a tumble dryer.

I don't really see why it would need washing regularly unless you're a particularly sweaty person (my dad is and my poor mum has about 9 duvets on rotation)

BogRollBOGOF · 30/05/2023 13:30

Never.

It gets aired over the bannister/ washing line when I wash the bedding.

CurtainsForBea · 30/05/2023 13:30

Yep laundrette. Huge washers specificaly advertised as being for duvets,

I go and shove it on then sit in the cafe next door and order breakfast. It's quite therapeutic.

Never. It's wool, it's super king. It was far too expensive to replace regularly (plus that is so wasteful!)

Exactly this

I have such a low summer tog, I stick it in the wash with duvet cover on and then pull it out ready to dry and ready to throw back on the bed.
Love that I don't have to faff about with the cover :)

shelbabab · 30/05/2023 13:44

Never, is this a thing? Mine wld break my washing machine am I supposed to bath it or something instead 😂

Actually I cld do the summer one. Think I will next time beds get done 👍 as I'm feeling filthy now 🙈

We have a superking and had an elderly incontinent cat (sadly deceased now). We put her in pet nappies but they would leak as she was so tiny and the smallest nappy so huge. (Note- premmie human baby nappies are better- softer and you just cut a hole in for the tail).

We would soak the duvet in the bath with some bleach. Not idea but did the job.

You take it down to the river find a big flat stone lay it there. Scrub section by section with a dead hedgehog or dog fish. Then hang over a water fall for 12 minutes to rinse out the dirt. Job done 👍

Never. I’m a sweaty slattern. Had it for 15 years and I’m still alive without any health issues. I’m moving soon and will treat myself to a new one perhaps.

15 years that may be a record

Cookerhood · 30/05/2023 15:27

All those who never wash them, have you had a good sniff of them? I know they have covers on, but I have a friend that we stay with & the duvet always smells stale in spite of having a clean cover on. I'm assuming it's never been washed.

Lorrymum · 30/05/2023 17:55

I often wonder about our modern obsession with cleaning. Were eiderdowns and patchwork quilts washed in the past? Surely they would have been ruined.

Ketzele · 30/05/2023 18:00

Although I'm in the never camp, I do believe in airing. I never make my bed first thing - I prefer to leave it 'open' so everything can air out. And when I wash the cover I leave the duvet airing for a few hours before dressing it again.

Never. I don’t think it fits in the washing machine.

Which prompts my next question - how are all the duvet washers doing it? Do you do it by hand?!

I leave at the launderette and they wash it for me. I could do it myself in one of their large machines but really don't want to sit around waiting for it to wash and dry.

Flidina · 30/05/2023 18:11

Winter and summer duvets here, all washed and dried at the local laundrette, before put away.

cannaecookrisotto · 30/05/2023 18:26

Washed it once 5 years ago when cat pissed on it.

drpet49 · 30/05/2023 18:32

once a year

Sids81 · 30/05/2023 18:40

I have to confess I hated trying to find a launderette as it wouldn't fit in my machine, so I ditched it and got beautiful sheets, blankets and bed spreads instead. They are all washable, easy to dry and fit in my machine so everything gets washed weekly now. Plus I have an obsession with buying beautiful sheets lol

Greenfree · 30/05/2023 18:41

I've never washed one, I just buy a new duvet and pillows every summer & winter

And that’s why the planet is truly fucked. How wasteful!

Neekoh · 30/05/2023 19:03

We have two duvets - Winter/Spring and Summer/Autumn. Each one gets washed before it gets packed away, so once a year. They're also aired out on the line here and there whilst in use.

And why people say they've got no money. That's £150 a time. So wasteful.

I recycle the old ones and know how to manage my budget. I normally spend about £70 on the duvet and pillows each time as shop in the sales

ShinySh · 01/06/2023 22:33

You’re not meant to wash feather and down ones as far as I’m aware. Feather and down duvets usually need extra care too - shaking out, not putting throws or blankets on top. Otherwise they go flat. Told this by John Lewis in bed linens dept.

Nor are you meant to wash wool ones.

Synthetic usually fine to wash.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 01/06/2023 22:34

Never. I am a rigorous airer, however, and don't smother my duvet with cushions, polyester covers and small dogs. Proper Egyptian cotton covers and a good draught, that's what you need.
