How often do you wash your duvet?

As summer approaches, drying a duvet becomes easier. I'm curious about how frequently you wash your duvet in the summer. Do you find yourself doing it less often in the winter? Also, how do you manage to dry your duvet during the winter months?

Mine has never been washed.
What are you all spilling on them??

It would be cheaper to buy a new one, than dry clean it.

I don't know where I could find a down/feather duvet, or a wool one, which would be cheaper than having either drycleaned!

Eh I don’t…

Once a year at the laundromat as they have huge machines. Every July. July coincides with a big festival in our little tourist town so it is a useful reminder for me. I also get the oven cleaned in July and my 'annual haircut'. Grin

CatsOnTheChair · 30/05/2023 10:39

The actual thing in the middle? Never.
Actually, that's a lie. It got washed the day the ceiling collapsed and left plaster and rain water all over our bed.

I did actually wash the mattress protector yesterday tho - but the duvets get switched out by season, so aren't used att the time. The protector is there every night.

Well, my duvet is now 20 years old and has only been washed twice. It's feather and down, and is still beautiful and fluffy and light.

I've shared this story before. But I remember as a child helping my grandmother remove the feathers from pillows and throws and replacing them into new covers. The feathers themselves were never washed, and originally came from their own chickens. They must have been truly ancient.

lavenderlou · 30/05/2023 11:15

Never. Air it outside in the summer but that's it.

Ours are feather/down & get washed at the end of the season when they get changed for the winter/summer one. The winter ones are too big for the machine so they go to the dry cleaners. The summer ones are dried on the line to start with & finished in the dryer.

Exactly this

SettlingForAnotherMuffin · 30/05/2023 12:43

I get ours washed annually. They are feather ones and it a right pain to dry them and fluff them out again. The DCs have non-feather duvets (both have sensory issues and cannot cope with feathers for some reason) and theirs are washed every couple of months I think because they fit in our machine.

But I always use 2 duvet covers (and 2 pillows) with the (probably mistaken) idea that it keeps them cleaner overall.

I like the idea of a summer airing though.

JadeSeahorse · 30/05/2023 12:45

We only have the 10.5 tog duvets as we can't bear the heavier ones.

They are the super dry type and fit nicely into my 9kg washing machine so I usually wash them every 3 months. If the weather is bad I can just hang it over the landing handrail and it dries in a couple of hours after the 1600rpm spin.

Love a freshly washed duvet! 👍

mamabear715 · 30/05/2023 12:47

Never. Life's too short. Plus I buy cheap ones & get new when they get thin!

Hfgvi · 30/05/2023 12:57

Never! I do spray a bit of febreeze on every so often.

TabbyM · 30/05/2023 13:02

Never. It is fairly new as was sick over the last one with covid.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/05/2023 13:05

Ours go once a year to the dry cleaners, but to be laundered and dried in their big dryers - too big for ours. Duvets must not be dry cleaned - the fumes are toxic.

YouNeverCanTellWithBees · 30/05/2023 13:13

Never wash it and certainly don't buy a new one every year, that's insane!

CrotchetyQuaver · 30/05/2023 13:14

I take the winter one to the laundrette every summer for a service wash. The summer one I can do myself

Pteryl · 30/05/2023 13:14

We have a wool superking. You can definitely wash it (ours is from Devon Duvets), and we had to once when the cats peed on it! Other than that, you can just put it out in the sun for the afternoon.

Emmamoo89 · 30/05/2023 13:14

Never

PartnersInCrime · 30/05/2023 13:17

Super king feather ones - get done at the dry cleaners/launderette at change over point AKA this week!

HopelesslyDevoted2u · 30/05/2023 13:19

Never

Gettingbysomehow · 29/05/2023 23:31

Every couple of weeks. I have a quick dry coverless duvet.

These are great aren't they? We have a double one each to save duvet wars and they go in the machine and come out practically dry.

Seasonofthewitch83 · 30/05/2023 13:23

I have never washed mine...they have covers on! The covers are washed and changed weekly on a Sunday.

IglesiasPiggl · 30/05/2023 13:23

PromisingMiddleagedWoman · 30/05/2023 09:47

Never. I don’t think it fits in the washing machine.

Which prompts my next question - how are all the duvet washers doing it? Do you do it by hand?!

There's a laundrette round the corner. I use the jumbo machine. It takes 35 minutes.

Lorrymum · 30/05/2023 13:25

Never, I have in the past and they are never the same after washing.

ChokeToDeathOnThreePoundsOfMeat · 30/05/2023 13:25

We each have one for summer & one for winter. They get washed before getting put away for storage. And if anything gets spilled on them. In summer - over the washing line. In winter - over the heated airer with a dehumidifier. Stick them in the machine first thing in the morning, dry by bedtime. We only have a double bed so they aren't enormous, & I specifically bought duvets that will go in a standard home machine. Our pillows will also survive a wash too, they get washed at least every couple of months as DH & DD are sweaty heads & I have a sensitive sense of smell.
