Would you steal sand from the beach? (Lighthearted)

We need some sand for these weight things we got to attach to the legs of our gazebo. Apparently they come empty so you need something to fill them with. I suggested going to the local beach and using sand from there rather than the further expense of buying sand or something else.. DH says no we can't do that as it's illegal to steal sand , which according to google is technically true, but still, is it really that big of a deal? Does anyone care? Would a police officer really arrest me for stealing some sand? 😆 (as title says this is lighthearted)

You do you boo.
We all have our own boundaries about what we think is acceptable or not.
You are taking sand from the beach,
Ive been known to pick up a pine cone from the ground at the local park for my kid to paint.
I saw a man picking up spent ciggy butts yesterday.
Our local beach has pine cones and butts in its sand so you are just fulfilling everyone’s dreams.

But by lighthearted I meant it's just for fun, I'm not actually going to go to the beach! It's just a discussion, calm down! Why do you feel so strongly about sand anyway 😂

I suspect that if everyone agreed that it was fine to take sand from the beach you would be down there at the moment filling your bucket. You were the one who started the thread, and you asked a question - why shouldn't people feel strongly about people doing things they really shouldn't be and therefore give you an honest answer. No doubt you would be first in the queue to complain if beaches had no sand because people all decided it was fine to take it for their own use.

We took sand from the beach when we got married in a little tub

You got married in little tub 😮?! That’s definitely different!!
(Sorry, I couldn’t resist 😁)

Hahaha aww I'm terrible for rambling 🤣🤣
I wish MN had an edit button to stick a couple of commas in here and there 🤣

Huge amounts of sand were dumped at Bacton gas works to stop it falling into the sea. Tonnes rolled down current to replenish Walcott & Sea Palling (cover up all the concrete) & perhaps slow erosion at Happisburgh. Nobody is going to notice if someone like OP lifts 6-8 kg worth of the 60000 tonnes or whatever is rapidly being washed away.

I just think it'd be less petrol & faster so a lot more convenient & cost effective to go get a £5 bag of sand at garden centre instead.

MN used to do lighthearted well <wistful>

What a strange thread! 1) what's the joke and 2) of course people are serious about environmental damage even when it's on an individual scale

Got any better jokes, OP?

This thread style has become quite typical.

OP starts a thread on a topic about which she knows she's wrong so makes sure to put "light-hearted".
As expected everyone tells her she's wrong.
OP says it wasn't serious and they can't stop laughing at the silly people taking her post seriously even though she would never ever do the thing.

DRS1970 · 30/05/2023 09:33

Can't you just fill them with water?

lljkk · 30/05/2023 09:52

I wonder if OP could get some used plastic yogurt pots, the 1 kg size ones, and fill them with water, to use as ballast. The empty pots would be easy to store.

Ask on freecycle or Facebook if anyone has any left over from a building project. I’ve got a big bag of builders sand at the bottom of my garden that’s been there for over a decade since it was landscaped. I’d gladly give it away free.
